ALICE MERTON – Alice Merton At The Parish Thursday October 11, 2018

ALICE MERTONWith a well-travelled background and an eclectic jumble of influences, Alice Merton broke through with her infectious hit ‘No Roots’ in 2018, quickly marking herself out as an unassuming, mood-lifting, quirky, pop songwriter in the making. Alice Merton Keeps Me Awake Lyrics: I wanna shut my eyes I could use some sleep But all my thoughts keep racing restlessly And I don’t know how this happ. Search songs, albums or artists. You can look at Alice’s music in the same way – simple at first pass, but a multifaceted jewel on deeper inspection. Take her breakthrough hit No Roots”, for example. It starts off as an ordinary, light tune with a thumping bass beat, counterbalanced by the German singer’s melodious voice drawing on her nomadic youth of moving around with her family. Then in come a tribal-flecked chorus, humming backing vocals and finally, a bridge breakdown via a quick flurry of retro synths that hit out of nowhere. It’s a pop song worthy of the highest marks, showcasing Alice’s vocal talents, broad range of influences and pumping energy, fully on display when she’s hopping around onstage as well.

We’re working on a full-length album actually. So it’s going to come out, if everything goes well, beginning of next year, and we’ll just be releasing songs up ‘til then. I’d already written a lot of songs, and we’re working on productions, and we’re just going to start releasing them one by one.

She’s accomplished something early in her career that most artists never achieve: she started her own record label. Paper Planes Records is German-based, but with Merton’s natural talents and co-founder Paul Grauwinkel, the label is sure to take all of its works international.

Thus far I have been determined not to force cool” music on my children, so as not to accidentally infect them with overwrought critical wonkiness. (When I grow up I want to be like you and say whether music is good,” the 5-year-old told me last week, which is at once heartwarming and a phenomenally savage burn.) The various songs and albums they’ve gotten obsessed with so far are fairly organic and commonplace, from the Frozen soundtrack (I still tear up at Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”) to the Trolls soundtrack (Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick’s version of September” is much worse than Taylor Swift‘s) to the star-studded and surprisingly robust Sandra Boynton empire Please enjoy this absolutely killer Fountains of Wayne song about trucks.

A lot of the time I don’t really know how I feel about something until I’ve written a song about it. And that’s the song that took off! I think it’s so cool that you have put so much of yourself into your music. When I when I hear your songs, it does feel like I hear who you are in MINT.ALICE MERTON

Alice Merton is planning out her career on seemingly separate planes. There’s her full-length debut album, Mint, which she released in January. Then there’s the label (in the U.S., her record will be released on Mom+Pop Records). At the same time, she’s still supporting her earlier singles, including the aforementioned No Roots.” Because of the staggered release strategy for the song in various countries, it was peaking in one place while being introduced elsewhere at the same time. In some cases, later singles like Why So Serious” or Lash Out” have preceded her original hit in a market.

Mint” also seems to have a few instances of poorly executed experimentation. For example, in Funny Business,” the fourth song on the album, Merton tries out a voice synthesizer that throws her voice into a robotic, high-pitched melody during pieces of the chorus. It’s a truly intriguing attempt, but instead of adding anything to the listening experience, the experiment sounds horribly unpleasant and completely out of place. That being said, the rest of the song is amazing, with strong vocals and instruments, and should have gained more popularity than it did.

A lot of the labels that I was talking to told me that I needed to remix the song or that I needed to take out the guitar — or that I needed to make a rockier production or more poppy production. And most people just said it wouldn’t work on the radio because it was so different from what the radio was playing.

Alice Merton still gets anxious to the point of nausea before performing. More than a year since the release of snowballing worldwide hit No Roots,” which quickly reached the top spot on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, the Berlin-based Anglophile songwriter still faces bouts of self-doubt that she will make a misstep.

Although there are numerous problems with many of the songs on Mint,” Merton deserves praise where it is due. Not every song is a boring, formulaic concoction of other music or an unflattering experiment gone wrong. Homesick,” Lash Out” and Speak Your Mind” are hands down the strongest songs on Mint.” Every one of these tunes does something different from the indie-pop image Merton has been known for in the past. Lash Out” and Speak Your Mind” have a touch of rock in them, with headbanging drums, electric guitar and Merton’s voice sitting comfortably in a deeper, favorable range. Homesick” utilizes plucky piano chords and strumming with a hint of electronic synthesized beats that come together perfectly with Merton’s rounded voice in a compelling symphony of sounds.

They Might Be Giants are, in fact, the only band I have actively pressed on the kids thus far, a lifelong obsession of mine that practically counts as a tangible family heirloom, though even that binge was first triggered by the 8-year-old hearing Apollo 18’s The Statue Got Me High” on the radio. (We have had several awkward conversations about the lyrics) But there’s something comforting and antiquated and preferable to the totally random radio-obsession approach; the kids have no control over what the radio plays, and I have no control over what radio songs the kids fixate on.

As told to Billboard in 2017, No Roots” was originally the stem from which the other songs branched out. As Mint came to fruition, this changed somewhat, as the various songs started becoming even more independent than I thought they’d be.” While No Roots” was still at the core, there were a lot of other emotions coming from other experiences that I had that were also coming to life”: Merton mentions disagreements with people she’s worked with, as well as the experience of starting her own record label, Paper Plane Records (named for the M.I.A. song, Paper Planes”), as having shaped the resulting album.

On the basis of this success, Merton officially released her first EP, No Roots, on 3 February 2017. No Roots reached number one on the French charts, number two on the German charts, number three in Austria, number 25 in Switzerland and number one in US alternative radio charts. Vodafone Germany even included the song in one of its commercials. 18 Alice signed with Mom + Pop Music in August 2017 for marketing within the United States, 4 and on 2 August 2017 she released her second single Hit the Ground Running with her new record label.

One of Merton’s greatest assets is her ability to tell stories that are both relatable, yet incredibly personal to her. Breakout single No Roots,” for example, uses songwriting as a form of therapy in the way it breaks down her feelings of security, insecurity, and connection to people and places.
