Warning: mild plot spoilers ahead for the upcoming summer film Alien: Covenant , though we plan to focus more on the overall Alien sci-fi franchise and some of the science depicted in the movie. Watching Sir Ridley Scott’s latest, Alien: Covenant , I couldn’t help but think of that quote throughout the whole runtime of the movie; not that Cutty and Sir Ridley are anything alike, far from it (if masterpieces were Super Bowl rings, Scott could easily slip one on each finger). But the idea of meaningless repetition” seemed to hang over every frame of Covenant. There’s echoes of the original Alien all around, in shot selection and story beats, but little of the intelligence or nuance. And boy, is it a huge disappointment.
Actor James Franco could soon find himself part of the crew of a ship destined to cross paths with dangerous aliens. But Alien: Covenant is also determined to have the requisite body-bursting alien scenes and a distracting B-plot involving the main ship trying to make contact with the ground. Plus lots of running around and screaming. When combined with all of these theological ideas, though, both the action and the ideas get diluted. Something more spare would have suited the big ideas, while something slightly less lofty would likely have made room for a more compelling ensemble horror film, as the original Alien was.
Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel sets course for the Big Questions, but jettisons all signs of intelligent life en route. Interestingly, because we know where this is ultimately headed — the events of Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection — we also know that David’s creation will battle with humans and even eventually be sought by the humans it wants to destroy, who will try to harness its destructive impulses for their own power-mongering ends.
20th Century Fox has released a new short film to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the Alien: Covenant DVD release. The short, which was made in partnership with YouTube Space LA, is titled David’s Lab – Last Signs of Life, and follows a nameless Weyland-Yutani astronaut as he explores the evil android’s abandoned laboratory on the Engineers’ homeworld.
But even as Covenant moves into territory already covered by Scott’s other sci-fi movies, it proves that Scott knows what he’s doing here. He creates powerful, striking imagery right out of myth, from a doomed necropolis filled with blackened, statue-like bodies to David’s years-old laboratory cave, filled with creepy specimens and papers flapping quietly in the chilling draft. And the slightly faster, noisier way that Scott handles the alien attacks – they’re not as spooky as they were in the original – is easily forgiven after scenes between David and Walter arguing over the meaning of existence.
Considering that Daniels is the last character to interact with David in Covenant and the short film “Advent” hints that she has a more significant role to play in his plan, it is almost certain that Waterston would be called back to reprise her role in Awakening if the film progresses past the writing stage.
James Franco’s role in Alien: Covenan t left many viewers confused, with his character burning to death in a cryopod within the first ten minutes. He’s briefly seen later in a video message to wife Daniels (Katherine Waterston), but Branson’s screentime amounts to less than a minute and barely any dialogue. Scott’s film expects audiences to sympathize with Daniels for her loss and her plan to fulfill Branson’s dream of building a cabin on Origae-6, but this lacks weight since he was barely a character in the story. This wasn’t always the case, with Branson being fleshed out a little further in earlier versions.
When there, Ripley discovers that the colony has been overrun and destroyed, and that Aliens, including an Alien Queen, have now effectively taken over. Ripley also discovers a terrified young girl, Newt, and cares for her for the duration of the film.
Biblical allusions are thrown around frequently in this movie, but these deep thoughts tend to be laid on too thick. When Weyland asks David to choose a name for himself, he stares at a statue of David and chooses it as his namesake. If David the Android is David, then Humanity is both his Goliath and (you’ll see…) his stone.
Parents need to know that Alien: Covenant is the sequel to Prometheus and the sixth overall movie in the Alien series (or eighth. if you count the Alien vs. Predator movies). It’s scary and violent: There’s lots of blood and gore, aliens bursting from body cavities, a beheading, and someone being burned alive (charred remains are shown). Faces are burned with acid, characters vomit and spew blood, and there’s fighting, kicking, and stabbing, as well as shooting and explosions. Language is also fairly strong, with multiple uses of “f-k,” plus “s-t,” “t-ts,” and more. There’s one somewhat-graphic sex scene, with partial female nudity (a breast). Characters drink and smoke briefly. As has often been the case in the Alien series, one of the central characters is a strong, brave woman (here played by Katherine Waterston).
Studio interference and pressure famously ran first-time director David Fincher into the ground on this film. There are early flashes of his visual brilliance here, but not enough to save the film from being dramatically cluttered and unsatisfying. Film critic Roger Ebert said it perfectly when he called Alien 3 one of the best-looking bad movies I’ve ever seen.” Fincher certainly bounced back-he went on to direct classics like Se7en (1995) and The Social Network (2010), but to date he has distanced himself from Alien 3 completely.
On board, they discover the body of an alien – a Space Jockey or Engineer, although these names weren’t used invented until after the film’s release – with a shattered rib cage, some eggs (free range, but definitely not laid by chickens) and a nasty face-hugging creature (known, imaginatively, as a face-hugger), which latches on to crew member Kane (John Hurt) and is consequently taken back on board the Nostromo.
In an interview with Scott for Variety , tied with Alien‘s 40th anniversary, it was confirmed that a script for a third prequel – following both Prometheus and Covenant – is currently in development. Scott will once more return to direct.

The 1992 sequel Alien 3 was directed by David Fincher, who went on to direct Seven, The Social Network, and Netflix’s House of Cards. Citing studio interference with the production, he essentially disowned it. In 2003, producer Charles de Lauzirika completely recut the film, inclining it toward Fincher’s original vision. The Assembly Cut” was received much better than the original.
All of that being said, it must be mentioned that Alien: Covenant is a beautiful film. This should come as no surprise considering that cinematographer Dariusz Wolski also shot Prometheus, which was filled with several, if perhaps a few too many , gorgeous landscape shots. From the stellar views of outer space to the shots of the terrain, it is clear that a lot of thought and love went into filming this movie. Made for a budget of $111 million, the production values are simply astonishing. See this one on IMAX if you can.
Ridley Scott’s prequel to Alien—a link between the 1979 film and 2012’s Prometheus—might just be the most divisive blockbuster of the year. Katherine Waterston as Daniels, showing that James Cameron’s Aliens has not been forgotten. Other than the Fassbenders, though, Scott comes up a little short in character development, outsourcing the rest online: The Last Supper,” directed by his son Luke, is the introduction to the crew we never get.
As the Covenant remains in orbit, an expedition team descends to the earth-like planet’s surface and tracks the transmission’s signal to a crashed alien ship. Crew members Ledward and Hallett are infected by alien spores. Oram’s wife Karine helps the rapidly-sickening Ledward back to the lander where Maggie, the pilot, quarantines them both inside the med-bay. A small, pale, alien creature (neomorph) bursts from Ledward’s back, killing him, and then kills Karine. Maggie attempts to kill the creature with a shotgun, but triggers an explosion which kills her and destroys the lander. The neomorph escapes while a similar creature bursts from Hallett’s mouth.
EDELSTEIN: It looks even worse than it sounds. “Alien: Covenant” is plodding and repetitious with dull stretches between the scenes of screaming and splatter, although that was true of the first “Alien,” too. This one’s nowhere near as original or invasive or as ferociously exciting as James Cameron’s first sequel “Aliens.” But the movie does deliver. It’s not a cheat. Katherine Waterston makes a soulful protagonist, human rather than superhuman. And Danny McBride is fun as a mouthy officer who calls himself Tennessee.
The first hint that Rapace would be missing from the movie came when Fox released the first plot details, in which they called David the sole” inhabitant of a mysterious planet and survivor of the failed Prometheus mission. Shaw was conspicuously absent. But Deadline reported once the film started shooting that Rapace had traveled to Australia for week’s worth” of shooting. If that’s true, her scenes may have been cut since all that’s left of her in the current movie is a drawing and what looks like a wax body.
Black-and-white silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920) is considered the quintessential work of German Expressionism, but also one of the scariest films in cinema history. It follows a hypnotist (Werner Krauss) who uses a somnambulist to commit murders, and Wiene’s shadowed sets and striking visual style combines to unsettle the viewer in ways most filmmakers only dream of managing.
The film is set around a decade or so after the events of Prometheus, in 2104, and 20 years or so ahead of the events of Alien (2122). But a short film, detailing what happened to Shaw and David, helps bridge the gaps between Prometheus and Covenant.
Like virginity, we can never re-experience Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) for the first time. The series, which remains in Scott’s capable hands with the latest elegant man-versus-monster-in-space iteration Alien: Covenant, has lost the shock and awe of the new. Like Prometheus and Aliens, these sequels and prequels struggle to keep the audience aroused and remain relevant.
