Future superstar Anne- doesn’t do things by halves. Ever since she was two years old and joined her local performing arts school, she’s wanted to be the best at whatever she puts her mind to. Roles in two West End productions suggested she was pretty good at singing and acting, so when she started doing karate she won two international championships by the age of seventeen. But music has always been her passion and after touring the world with Rudimental, she’s ready to be the best again.

Anne-Marie’s studio debut has been a long time coming. (Literally as soon as I started writing music I was aiming toward the album.”) She released an EP, Karate, in 2015, and followed up with “Alarm,” her first single from the album, the following year.

It was a privilege to listen to Oomen perform some of her literary works. Upon introduction, I was instantly in awe. Her voice was genuine, and she relayed so much passion through her writings. Oomen read from her memoir Love, Sex, and 4H.” I liked how she used specific voices within her literature and during her performance. Each author has a voice”, yet Oomen clearly has many; one for each character. Her inflections and silent pauses presented as if she was reading each piece like a poem. Also, in my Creative Writing class, we have read From a High Place” and Keep Clear of Me.” Both I fell in love with their prose. Through her writings which express a humble and poetic outlook, Anne-Marie Oomen has inspired me to continue to write. I cannot be more grateful.

Impeachment is now effectively inevitable. Taylor’s testimony fleshed out the biggest open questions, including whether there was a quid pro quo with Ukraine (there was), what it involved (military aid), and what Trump wanted (investigations of the Biden family and the 2016 election.) Congress has now heard from career civil servants and from political appointees, all telling a similar story, and Taylor removed the last scintilla of doubt. With that, it’s all but impossible to imagine a scenario in which House Democrats don’t vote to impeach the president.

Her determination to protect fans from romantic treachery chimes with the roles female pop stars are expected to play in 2018: agony aunt and inspiration as well as style icon and banger-machine. Anne-Marie’s debut album, Speak Your Mind, commits to her mission and expands her image from motivational speaker to whole, vulnerable person. Twisting her legs around her body and concentrating intently on her answers, she is far less bolshy than I had imagined from the face she puts across in her songs. She grasps for the right words, worries about being inarticulate (she is not) and talks in a matter-of-fact fashion about her difficulties with anxiety. Pop stars letting their guard down” is a cliche of intimacy – but compared with Dua Lipa and Paloma Faith , the only other young, solo British women on the albums chart, Anne-Marie doesn’t seem to have any guard to put up. It is hard to imagine Lipa posting videos on Twitter of her singing earnest, self-written political songs.

Nicholson caught the attention of Rudimental when one of their vocalists left; they asked Anne-Marie to replace her. She featured on four tracks on their album We the Generation, and spent two years touring alongside them.

She eventually landed in the studio singing someone else’s songs for them,” got noticed through the session and ultimately signed to Rocket Music, which also manages Sheeran.
