The Marvel Cinematic Universe is ten years old, but in that span it’s already given us an astounding 18 films. (For comparison’s sake, the James Bond series needed 35 years to approach a similar number.) The 19th, Avengers: Infinity War , arrives this Friday as the grand culmination of years of creative planning. But how many of the Marvel movies do you have to have seen to get a basic idea of what’s going on in this one? Luckily, it’s not all of them; if you have an encyclopedic knowledge of everything that happened in Ant-Man, it’ll be wasted here. Below, find our guide to the Marvel movies to watch before Infinity War.

What else has Scarlet Johansson been in? Johansson is one of the biggest movie stars on the planet and has starred in indie dramas Her and Under the Skin as well as blockbusters Ghost in the Shell and The Jungle Book, and awards darlings Girl with the Pearl Earring and Lost in Translation. More recently, Johansson has played the lead in the Luc Besson thriller Lucy and voiced characters in the animated films Sing and Isle of Dogs.

The nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War is a sequel to 2012’s The Avengers (the fifth highest grossing film of all time) and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron (the seventh highest grossing film of all time).

That makes the franchise hard to criticize. You can’t really be for or against Marvel (in spite of the conspiracy theories of some DC fans ), and you can’t quite opt out of it either. They don’t call it a universe for nothing: Where else are we going to go? So we make our zigzagging ways, picking out our favorite planets and solar systems, accepting a baseline of tedious, standardized dead space that makes the brighter constellations seem disproportionately fresh and surprising. Guardians of the Galaxy” was so funny and weird. Not like a superhero movie at all. Same with Thor: Ragnarok.” Captain America is such a complicated guy. Black Panther” gave audiences so much to root for and talk about.

What else has Elizabeth Olsen been in? Olsen began acting in smaller independent films like the cult thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene before stepping into blockbusters. Aside from her work in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Olsen starred in the 2014 Godzilla reboot and the 2017 thriller Wind River. She is the younger sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Malekith and his army of Dark Elves attempt to use the Aether, or the Reality Stone, to destroy all Nine Realms of the universe. Asgardians, led by Thor’s grandfather Bor, seize the stone and bury it deep underground, where it remains for thousands of years.

Some of those characters fare better than others. For most of Infinity War, the cosmic” side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is well-represented by Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Guardians of the Galaxy (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and team), who end up working together. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are more willing to spend time with them, even when they’re not involved in a giant battle, and that pays off with the movie’s funniest moments — as well as scenes with real weight and melancholy.

As with many other superhero movies that try to stuff too many characters and subplots into one container, “Avengers: Infinity War” feels less like a coherent story and more like an attempt to wring as much money as possible out of its various superhero characters through virtue of sheer name recognition. By some accounts, this movie cost as much as $400 million to make. Those in charge are the directing team of Anthony and Joe Russo, who also made the last two “Captain America” films The screenplay is credited to Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, though there’s no telling how many producers, executives and rewrite specialists may have been involved.

However, Thanos teleports to Wakanda as well to obtain the Mind Stone. All the Avengers, Okoye, T’Challa, and Groot gather to defend Vision, but Thanos effortlessly defeats them one by one, including Rogers, who is briefly able to hold back Thanos, much to the Titan’s surprise. Realizing that they have no other choice, Vision asks Maximoff to destroy the Mind Stone herself, which will likely kill Vision.

Captain America fights the Red Skull on an advanced bomber plane set on course to destroy New York City. The Red Skull is consumed by a space portal after touching the Tesseract, a cube that contains the Space Stone, which falls from the plane into the sea.

With “Infinity War,” Marvel Studios is capping off a decade of storytelling spanning 18 previous movies, an unprecedented feat in Hollywood franchise-building. The comic book flick unites the Avengers, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” and several other properties, including “Black Panther” and “Spider-Man” in one blockbuster.

Or maybe not! Marvel followed up its last Avengers film (2015’s Age of Ultron, which ended in a fairly dark place for several characters) with the first Ant-Man. And while that movie wasn’t Marvel’s finest work, its goofy situations and size-bending superpowers served as a mostly effective palate cleanser. Maybe the same will be true under even graver circumstances.

Heroism, courage, self-sacrifice are front and center in most Marvel movies, but with stakes feeling even greater than usual here, they really stand out – along with teamwork, of course. Several characters face ultimate test; most pass. Several make extremely difficult decisions while acting out of love. The crisis unifies the heroes instantly, reuniting factions. All that said, violence still the core problem-solving method, and Thanos’ mission of “mercy” involves genocide.

While the body count at the end of Avengers: Infinity War was pretty high, it’s important to remember that plenty of characters wound up surviving the whole ordeal. Okay, maybe not plenty of them, but a few! Some! Okay, a couple. But among the survivors was Thanos’ least favorite daughter, Nebula. She managed to make it to the end of the movie despite being literally dissected earlier in the film. So why would a scrub like Nebula be alive while so many fan favorite characters were turned to dust? As with so many things, the answer lies in the comics.

And that mysterious Soul Stone, which factors heavily into its own Infinity War subplot, might be the key to getting all of the dusted characters back In Marvel comics, the Soul Stone actually contains its own pocket dimension, known as Soul World. We might have gotten a glimpse of it at the end of Infinity War, when Thanos has a vision of speaking with Young Gamora on a seemingly endless, orange plane.

At Plugged In, we often talk about how important it is to talk through the entertainment we consume, and that’s especially true for Infinity War. If you decide to see this movie—and if you take your family to see it—budget time to talk about it afterward. There’s a lot to process here, and many who watch it will need to process it. I won’t lie to you: I’m still processing myself.

Erik Selvig, whose mind is controlled by Loki, uses the Tesseract to open a portal above Stark Tower. This allows the Chitauri, Thanos‘s personal army, to drop into New York. The Avengers fight them off and eventually capture Loki.

In retaliation, Thanos kills Heimdall, leaving Thor in anguish. After this, the Tesseract – which had been left on the floor – is handed over to Thanos by Maw. Thanos crushes the Tesseract and inserts the Space stone within it into his gauntlet. Now in possession of two stones, Thanos orders his children to invade Earth and retrieve both the Mind Stone and the Time Stone Loki then suddenly interrupts by pretending to pledge loyalty to Thanos. As he does so, he commits the bold yet fatal action of trying to kill Thanos with a dagger. Thanos sees through Loki’s attempt and foils him with his newly acquired stone, and proceeds to grab him by the neck. Thor only helplessly watches as Thanos breaks Loki’s neck before his very eyes. Thanos uses the Power Stone to destroy the Statesman while he and the Black Order teleport away, leaving Thor to die as he mourns over his brother’s dead body as the ship explodes around him.

Titan warlord Thanos kills the families of Gamora and Nebula, and then adopts the two as his daughters. They grow up to become skilled and feared fighters, and both eventually defy and desert him. Gamora joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, while Nebula pursues a revenge mission against Thanos.

The filming of Black Panther ended right around when Infinity War began shooting , meaning that Marvel had no idea just how popular Black Panther would become before its characters were written into Infinity War. This could explain T’Challa’s relatively unremarkable death — compared to that of, say, Spider-Man, who gets a tearful final moment with his mentor Tony Stark — and why the Black Panther had so few lines and little to do.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been taking shape for a decade now, and it has all been building to this! You may need a refresher before hitting the theaters, or maybe you’re just not sure how SPOILER redacted fits into SPOILER redacted after seeing the film.

On top of that, we all knew that Marvel would be splitting this story into two movies — even if they later publicly reversed course on that particular point. In the end, if you didn’t know that Thanos might pull out the W by the end of this movie, you haven’t been paying close attention.

And so on and so forth. Most of the Avengers left standing at the end of Infinity War” hail from the first phase of Marvel’s big-screen ambitions. Chris Evans’ and Mark Ruffalo’s contracts are nearing their end, and Robert Downey Jr. has long operated under a picture-by-picture arrangement that does not guarantee his presence in any future entities. Those guys can cede custody of the series to the presumably resurrected generation of superheroes in the aforementioned Avengers” conclusion, whose title has not been revealed because it would constitute a spoiler that probably concerns these deaths.

But rather than match their support team’s inventiveness, the directors avoid risk. They capture both the violent (sometimes cruel) action and the emotionally intense private moments in either a boringly flat or frantically hacky manner (snap-zooms on falling figures; herky-jerky camerawork and fast cutting during fight scenes; the same stuff you see in most action films made during the past decade). They use the camera in an expressive or poetic way so rarely that when they do bust out a heartfelt flourish (like the long, slow camera move that reveals the Guardians in their spaceship engaged in a sing-along, or the “wipes” that reveal the reality that Thanos’ illusions hide, or a climatic fight between Thanos and multiple heroes) it’s as if somebody had briefly sparked a dull wedding reception to life by going out on the dance floor and demanding a song with a backbeat.

Don’t worry too much about getting lost in the mechanics of the plot, however — it’s a simple series of fetch quests. Thanos wants to collect the various Infinity Stones. You’ll know what those are when you see them, and at one point you’ll be treated to a kind of mystical slide deck about them, plus you’ll be told “If he collects all six, he can kill half the universe” enough times that you’ll understand the opposing sides.

Avengers: Infinity War was a project literally conceived to have all the pressure in the world riding on it, but really in the end it’s not exactly challenging to see why it works. It’s arguably the best writing and directing teams that Marvel Studios has hired orchestrating one of the greatest ensembles (in terms of both talented actors and beloved characters) ever put together in the history of cinema. It’s a unique, exceptional achievement that somehow leaves you both fully satisfied and desperate for more, and ranks among the best adventures we’ve seen yet from this stellar franchise.

Iron Man was not a household name in 2008. He was considered a B-List superhero. Now he’s tasked with being the first shot in this ambitious concept. Thankfully, everyone knocked it out of the park. Still considered one of the best in the whole franchise, we’re introduced to plenty of characters that will pop up dozens of times over the years. The main takeaway here is Tony Stark becomes Iron Man – and ultimately reveals it to the world, because who needs a secret identity? We’re also introduced to Agent Coulson who name drops S.H.I.E.L.D. for the first time. And in the first after-credits scene – a trend that MCU would adopt for all other films – we’re introduced to the charismatic Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who informs Tony of an upcoming project known as the Avenger Initiative.

There are six Infinity Stones , the film explains: powerful crystals that originated in the Big Bang, and that represent aspects of existence and have related elemental powers. Some are spread across the universe, but half of them are on Earth, where they’ve played significant roles in past MCU movies. Thanos is trying to collect all of them, slotting them into a massive golden glove. If he acquires them all, he says, he’ll have the power to wipe out half the universe with a snap of his fingers.

Each frame, each scene does not let you get bored, from the Marvel logo, and to the stage after the credits. Favorite heroes once again experienced side by side and you feel it, you are completely absorbed in a hurricane of events and you are watching it in one breath. In comparison with the War of Infinity, even the Confrontation looks like an ordinary fight in the sandbox.

I shouldn’t say too much about where that quest leads, but I will note that Infinity War feels very much like the first half of a two-part film, with an ending that sets up the still-untitled Avengers 4 (due May 3, 2019). The greatest danger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones, despite what Avengers: Infinity War” would have you believe.

Earth is being threatened by a massive malign hunk with a huge ridgey chin called Thanos, played by Josh Brolin. If he can gain ownership of all the talismanic infinity stones and place them in the holes in his custom-built gauntlet then he will have the ultimate power to destroy anything he wishes in the universe. And he has a chilling wish for mass slaughter of half the sentient beings in existence, ostensibly so that the other half will have enough food to eat – but really so they will bow down to him as the tyrant lord.

Avengers: Infinity War sets out to accomplish a feat never previously attempted in Hollywood: bring together all the heroes of a sprawling superhero universe in a cohesive narrative while delivering an event that justifies 10 years and 18 movies worth of build up. There is an unprecedented amount of hype surrounding the latest installment in Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, but an unprecedented level of expectations as well. The question of Avengers: Infinity War was whether Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo could meet or exceed those expectations. Avengers: Infinity War delivers an exciting culmination of the MCU, though it’s overstuffed and suffers from certain typical Marvel movie problems.
