BAD WOLVESWithout question, the breakout metal band of the first half of 2018 is Bad Wolves, with their cover of the Cranberries’ classic Zombie” rocketing into the mainstream. A Los Angeles, California-based heavy metal outfit with an impressive hard rock pedigree, Bad Wolves employ a lethal blend of melody and might that invokes names like Meshuggah, Mudvayne, and Sevendust. They gained mainstream attention in 2018 with their cover of the Cranberries’ “Zombie,” released soon after vocalist Dolores ‘Riordan’s death.

Tommy: There’s a lot of social and political commentary on the record, its not ambiguous… but it just isn’t telling people what to think. The songs bring up issues such as police brutality, racism, the polarisation of the United States and how people’s political belief systems have become like a religion where people have started to hate each other. It’s kind of just an illustration of what it’s been like to be in America this past couple of years. Just watching the change in the political climate and so… we hope people dig it and we want to be thought provoking, but not force any of our opinions. Even the guys in the band have different views and conflicting political beliefs- but we all love and respect one another. We kind of feel like its important to state things, but also leave it open to interpretation so people can form their own opinions and conclusions without hating each other.

Though the song is gaining steam on streaming services (up 18-6 on Rock Streaming Songs) and on radio (up 15-11 in Mainstream Rock Songs), the primary driving factor behind its recent Hot 100 success is sales. “Zombie” jumps from No. 24 to No. 2 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart this week (with 44,000 in sales for the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music – second only to Drake ‘s Hot 100-topping “God’s Plan”), after climbing to the apex of the iTunes chart, where it stayed for most of last week – a journey followed closely by the band on their social media accounts, largely in disbelief.

The video begins with text discussing the cover’s background and the passing of ‘Riordan. The video then cuts to shots of the band performing the song in a black room, wearing black clothing and playing black instruments interspersed with close-up scenes of a woman being covered in gold paint. The video then cuts in between shots of the band performing and the woman interacting with vocalist Tommy Vext which mainly involves her smearing gold paint on a glass pane between the two of them. After the guitar solo, she etches “1-15-18”, the date of ‘Riordan’s death, into the paint. The woman’s appearance (gold body paint, gold dress, and gold beaded headdress) is nearly identical to that of ‘Riordan in The Cranberries’ original Zombie music video. The video ends with a quote by Vext.

Yes, she’s doing it with us tonight and every night for the rest of our lives! (laughter) It seems to be the case. Yeah, she’s an Eleven Seven partner. They presented the idea of her singing a song with us. The song was already recorded, but Tommy always thought a female voice would be good on it. He had been searching for a bit, and then she kind of presented herself through management, ‘cause she’s on the same label as us. So all this kind of stuff worked out. Now we’re with her on tour, she was able to do those Five Finger dates, and her record just dropped. I think it’s called Coming in Hot.” Check it out.

Wanna tag Bad Wolves with a neat little label? Good luck with that. This band’s gloriously unpredictable musical diversity defies the convenience of categorization that the modern world demands.

Bad Wolves is an American metal band formed in 2017 led by Tommy Vext as lead vocals followed by John Boecklin on drums, Doc Coyle as lead guitar, Chris Cain on the rhythm guitar, and Kyle Konkiel on the bass guitar. In May 2017, Bad Wolves released their debut single, Learn to Live”, in November 2017, Bad Wolves released their second single, Toast to the Ghost”, and on January 18, 2018, they released a third single, which was a cover of Zombie” (originally by The Cranberries). Bad Wolves then finally released their debut studio album, Disobey”, on May 11, 2018.

Bad Wolves consists of members of underground hard rock groups like Divine Heresy, Snot, God Forbid, Bury Your Dead and In This Moment, managed by Five Finger Death Punch’s Zoltan Bathory. The song is included on their just-released debut album, Disobey,” for veteran industry exec Allen Kovac ‘s label.

The effects of wolves on livestock are also overblown. Data from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and other parts of the country where wolves live show that they are responsible for a very small amount of killing—between 0.1 and 0.6 percent of all livestock deaths in these areas. A 2014 Washington State University study, conducted over a 25-year period, found that indiscriminate killing of wolves actually increases the tendency of wolves to prey on livestock. The reason may be that sport hunting and commercial trapping of wolves break up stable wolf packs, creating a younger, less experienced population, inexperienced in killing traditional prey and more likely to show opportunism and pick off a sheep or calf. And of course, farmers who deploy guard dogs as a highly successful strategy of protecting their flocks and herds from predators can thank the wolf itself for that service.

And while the indirect economic benefits that wolves bring may provide their greatest value, there are direct benefits, too. As with Isle Royale, people also just love to see wolves; to hear wolves; and to place themselves, even for a short while, in a wild place that harbors wolves. Each year, thousands of wildlife watchers gaze at the world’s most-viewed wolves in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone, bringing in $35 million to the Yellowstone region annually. In the Great Lakes region, the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota, receives $3 million each year from wolf watchers. With wolves now claiming a more permanent place in the Great Lakes Region, we can expect tourism-related revenues to increase in all of the states with wolves.

The band’s debut album Bleed the Fifth was released on August 28, 2007, and sold 2,700 copies in its first week. Receiving generally positive reviews, Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic commented the album “strikes a near-perfect balance between confirmation and innovation”, while Dom Lawson of Metal Hammer commented “All in all, the portly pioneer Cazares has hit the bull’s-eye”.

It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind for Bad Wolves of late; formed of members from various different musical projects, the band began in late 2016 and are preparing to release their debut album Disobey on May 11th. Their cover of the Cranberries’ Zombie has reached incredible levels since it’s release, something that nobody quite predicted. With the Cranberries’ Dolores ‘Riordan set to reprise her vocals on their cover on the day she died, prompting the band to donate all the proceeds from the track to her children, it’s been a tumultuous ride for the band, to say the least.

These are things that for everyone in Bad Wolves are just surprising, because many of us come from an extreme metal background, so the idea of having a platinum record is not a goal. That’s something that only bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Metallica, Slipknot, Korn — those kinds of bands achieve. We never even dreamed of it. It feels good, because it feels like we were going to try to do something good with the song, and so many people supported it. It restores your faith in people.

The song was the first hard rock song in a decade to climb to No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes overall, peaking at No. 49 on the Top 40 (where it is still at No. 52), while also topping the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs, Spotify’s Global Viral 50 and Active Rock radio chart, the latter for three consecutive weeks. The track racked up 48 million total streams globally on Spotify and Apple, with 126 million views of the video (82 million on YouTube alone) and 440,000 downloads of the single worldwide. Zombie” also went Top 25 at Alternative, and scored No. 1 Shazam ratings in several cities, including Minneapolis and Indianapolis, with Hot AC and Top 40 play, respectively.

DevilDriver’s fifth album Beast was recorded at Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo, Texas with producer Mark Lewis , and released February 22, 2011. 23 John Boecklin confirmed that the new album was mixed by Andy Sneap at his Backstage studio in Derbyshire, England in July. 24 DevilDriver went on a tour in Australia with bands such as Iron Maiden , Slayer , All That Remains and Nonpoint for the Soundwave Festival in February and March 2011.

Though the band had always envisioned their “Zombie” cover as a potential single, they were initially wary of debuting with it. (“You don’t want to lead necessarily with a cover for a new band,” remarks Kline.) But once real-life circumstances intervened, they decided to make the song their first focus track, even filming a video for it (directed by classic MTV fixture Wayne Isham ) that paid visual homage to the Cranberries’ original Buzz Clip. However, the single was met with resistance early in its release.

On Tuesday night at the Gramercy Theatre in New York City, the Los Angeles-based heavy metal group presented a $250,000 check to ‘Riordan’s son Taylor, 20, step-son, Donny Jr., 27, and ex-husband, Don Burton. The check was also accepted on behalf of ‘Riordan’s daughters, Molly, 16, and Dakota, 12.

In 2013, the band was nominated and won another Golden God Award (Song of the Year) with “Lift Me Up”. This number one mainstream rock hit featured Rob Halford of Judas Priest as a guest vocalist. Halford and Rob Zombie joined the band’s performance at the Golden Gods Award Ceremony.

Tommy. I had known Zoltan for a while, played some shows here and there. But Tommy had a closer relationship with him. Tommy expressed interest about approaching him. I was like, Yeah. Do whatever you want, man.” So when we made that video for Lean to Live,” we let it hit the streets (laughs)—whatever. We released it, and it let gain some traction, and he showed him it, and he really liked it. That’s when things started formulating. That’s when things really took shape for the entire band. Once Zoltan agreed to manage us, he brought us in to Eleven Seven, presented us there. He was able to strike a deal there. That’s when everything fell into place, and that was around July of last year.

It was short lived, however, because while the wolves were mating in the woods the Notorious P.I.G. went to the house and shot Hap point blank. Three in the chest and one in the head, completely brutal. By the time Angelina and Monroe got back, the police were already there. Nick told the agents to let them in and Angelina, seeing her dead brother, momentarily lost control and transformed. You see what I see?” Hank asked, and for a second Nick thought he had seen the transformation — but he was actually referring to the blood on her shirt.

DevilDriver promoted the album at the 2007 Download Festival at Donington Park alongside headliners Linkin Park, Iron Maiden , and My Chemical Romance A Guinness world record was attempted by the band for the “largest circle pit” at the festival. Guinness responded to the query and denied the request stating they receive over 60,000 requests a year and there is no way to physically define where a circle pit starts and ends. They considered the proposal fully in the context of the subject area and stated that “our decision is final in this matter”. 17 18 The band also appeared at 2007’s Ozzfest Fafara had been planning to take his first six weeks off in 11 years, but Sharon Osbourne , who had managed Fafara’s previous band Coal Chamber , persuaded him to appear. 14 At a concert in Detroit, Michigan, a recording was made with the intention of releasing a live DVD in 2008 19 although this has yet to be released.

Bad Wolves is managed by the Zoltan Bathory of Five Finger Death Punch. Tommy: Yes, well technically John and I started working together in late 2016, and then Learn To Live is our first video and single that we released approximately a year ago.

Bad Wolves made a name for themselves in 2018 with the release of their debut album, Disobey, which sold over one million copies and featured their standout cover of The Cranberries’ Zombie.” Since then, the band has toured all over with some of Rock and Metal’s biggest acts including Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown , as well as performing at most of the major festivals across the country.

But then there’s songs like Remember When” and Hear Me Now,” where correct, that is 100 percent honest, you can’t overplay those songs. The songs are simple themselves, and they’re rock ballads, so to speak. We just chose a simple direction to really drive home a point.

Taking an even longer view of the human—wolf relationship, let’s remember that this species came to us in friendship perhaps more than 30,000 years ago, according to an emerging consensus among paleontologists. Pre-agricultural people and wolves may have viewed each other warily at first, but eventually an instinctive fear turned into acceptance and then later into companionship.

No. (laughter) It’s not. To me, it’s very strange, ‘cause this album is harder for me to play than DevilDriver stuff. And it’s because it’s a completely different tempo pocket feel. That’s what I was going for, ‘cause I didn’t want to repeat myself. A lot of DevilDriver is two-step, fast and kind of what I like to call white drumming.” It’s fast as fuck, but—that was another thing, too, with speed. It’s just gotten out of control. There’s always gonna be a kid in a basement who can do it faster than me on YouTube now, so I’m not being competitive in that nature. So I wanted to slow it down, and a lot of the tempos for these songs were different feels for me, and they’re very non-DevilDriver.

In 2008, the band reformed, with former Divine Heresy singer Tommy “Vext” Cummings on vocals. 9 Tommy Cummings and Sonny Mayo left the band, and a new band, “Tons”, was formed in 2009 with a new vocalist. They recorded three new songs titled “Ability & Control”, “1000 Ways of Pain” and “Fan the Flames” 10 before members of the group moved on to new projects.

The Bad Wolves Wolf Emblem Pullover Hoodie features the signature Bad Wolves shield artwork on the front, and the Bad Wolves logo written on each sleeve. Mourners and members of the public pay their respects as the late Dolores ‘Riordan lays in repose inside St. Joseph’s church on January 21, 2018 in Limerick, Ireland.

To make matters worse, Bad Wolves has a new album coming out. Wait, that didn’t come out right. Got to remember to finish your sentences. Ahem. To make matters worse, Bad Wolves has a new album coming out and they don’t have a title yet. Tommy has reached out on Instagram to all the Naughty Doggos (I assume that’s what they call their fans) out their to ask for their help in naming the album. They need our help, guys! Lucky for them, I’ve got a few suggestions.

Originally scheduled to feature a guest appearance from late CRANBERRIES frontwoman Dolores ‘Riordan, “Zombie” launched shortly after her death in January of 2018 and went on to top the rock radio chart and sell a million copies.

Kind of what I was mentioning before. When I was doing a lot of different things, I let some of it in. (laughs) And I will let some more of it in. To be honest, it started off like a strange, ‘80s pop-rock kind of band with really trying to keep some Danny Elfman in there and stuff like that. And it just wasn’t really working. It was cool and all, but I don’t think there was a market for it. There’s still tons of riffs that are hanging around that I think will work here and there. But then once I did a couple heavy metal tracks, it was just kind of like that’s what I feel comfortable playing, and that’s what I miss. Sometimes you’ve gotta step away from what you love and see if it comes back to you.

The band released their highly successful cover of Zombie” as a single in advance of their debut album, Disobey , which was released on May 18. The track, which was first released by The Cranberries in 1994, hit the Top 15 on the American rock radio chart and was No. 1 on iTunes in multiple countries, including the U.K., Sweden, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Ireland.

Good crowd interaction and the wall of death was awesome. This is not the first time seeing Tommy and the guys from Bad Wolves. Tommy was super cool staying to meet fans after the show for the fans to get selfies with him. Look forward to seeing John & Doc at the next show.

As the story goes, Cranberries singer Dolores ‘Riordan was set to sing on the cover, and when she unexpectedly passed away in January just hours before she was scheduled to hit the studio, the band shelved it. They eventually decided to release the song with proceeds benefiting ‘Riordan’s children, and the rest is modern rock history.

I got the chance to sit with Tommy Vext, the singer of such hits like ‘Do You Hear Me Now?’ ‘Remember When’ and of course their mega smash hit of their Cranberries cover ‘Zombie.’ Before the band took to the stage playing to a massive crow, I sat down with Tommy and just proceeded to laugh about all sorts of stuff.

From Ashes to New we’re AMAZING! Diamante in her head to toe BLUE rocked the crowd, and her duet for Hear Me Now with Bad Wolves was the icing on the cake! Bad Wolves was mind blowing, and we can’t wait to see them again in NY. This performance trifecta rocked the house.

Yeah. I’ve been touring with Doc since 2004. I’ve known Tommy and toured with him since probably 2007 or 2008. Chris Cain, we toured together in 2009 and stayed friends. And Kyle, I managed a band that he was in briefly. He was a member of that band briefly; I managed that band for maybe two years. Kyle’s probably the one I knew the least.

The Holy Spirit didn’t call Satan a bad person. He is called a roaring lion. He appears as a sheep, but he is still a wolf. He looks like sheep, but he doesn’t smell like sheep. He looks like sheep, but he doesn’t walk like sheep. He looks like sheep, but he doesn’t graze in the meadows like sheep. He looks like sheep, but he doesn’t act like sheep. He is a wolf. He runs in a pack with other wolves. He is dangerous, mean, and aggressive. The sweet talking wolf tries to lure you to trust him. Don’t. He is a wolf. The sweet talking wolf wants you to walk alone with him. Don’t. He wants you to think that he is good. He is not. He wants you to think that he has changed. He hasn’t. He wants to destroy you.BAD WOLVES

Bad Wolves scored a major breakthrough hit with their cover of The Cranberries‘ Zombie,” and now they’re looking to fans to see what song to cover next. The LA native was ‘a big fan’ of Dolores’ band and pushed Bad Wolves to do the cover, and that’s something that’s stuck with him.
