Most English speaking people call the French national holiday of 14 July ‘Bastille Day’ – supposedly after the storming of the Bastille in 1789. In 1880, the French government commissioned from Alfred-Philippe Roll (1846-1919) a painting that would preserve the memory of the first official celebration of 14 July as a national holiday. Finished in 1882, Roll’s work depicted the inauguration of the monument dedicated to the French Republic at Le Petit Palais, on 14 July 1880.
Under French dominion for 255 years, Pondicherry enjoys the nicknames the Indian Côte d’Azur,” and Riviera of the East.” The city celebrates Bastille Day by showcasing its unique brand of French fusion. Street parades of retired soldiers hoisting both French and Indian flags snake through the lush trees and colonial villa-lined streets while marching bands blare both countries’ national anthems.
Consequently because of its history, Place de la Bastille has been associated with revolution and dissent ever since the events of July 1789. Still today political protests and marches make a strong symbolic point by starting out here.
A life changing experience. Seeing them for the first time made me feel like a whole new person. I’m so ready and persuaded to watch them again. Bastille (stylised as BΔSTILLE) is a British Indie pop band formed in 2010. The group began as a solo project by lead vocalist Dan Smith , but later expanded to include keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist and guitarist Will Farquarson and drummer Chris “Woody” Wood. 2 The name of the band derives from Bastille Day , which is celebrated on 14 July, the date of Smith’s birthday. 3 Smith has said that the band was initially going to be called Daniel in the Den before they settled on Bastille. The name was later used for the 10th track on their album Bad Blood instead.
The band had never before experienced the kind of worldwide smash it did when lead singer Dan Smith teamed with DJ Marshmello on the 2018 single, Happier. Smart enough to quickly build on that kind of priceless exposure, Bastille released its third studio album, Doom Days, in June.
Another of Bastille’s big hits, “Happier,” came to Smith as he was about to step into the shower – which is how most melodies typically come to him, randomly. One of the most annoying times is when it happens to him at the movies. Sometimes, it’ll be a loud enough moment that he sings it into his phone but if it’s a quiet, dramatic moment he’s forced to leave. Smith, who spends a lot of time in movie theatres, has brought his passion for film to his music.
For Flaws”, Dan Smith does something which most people would find insane, if not potentially dangerous. From the first second of the song he climbs down from the stage and crawls his way into the audience. Not content with just greeting the few lucky fans in the front row, Smith makes his way across the General Admission pit – yes, diagonally across the pit, in the middle of all of his fans who join in as he sings and get the chance to dance with Smith each time the chorus comes along. As if that might not be a unique feat, as soon as Smith reaches the end of the pit close to the soundboard, he finds a way to enter the seated section of the audience and sing to those around, before making his way back through the GA pit and onto the stage. It’s remarkable, and only goes to show how much Bastille fans are a crucial part of the band’s existence and life experience.
There is a large military parade in Paris in the morning of July 14. Service men and women from various units, including cadets from military schools, the French Navy and the French Foreign Legion, participate in the parade. The parade ends with the Paris Fire Brigade. Military aircraft fly over the parade route during the parade. The French president opens the parade and reviews the troops and thousands of people line the route. Other people spend the day quietly and eat a celebratory meal or picnic with family and close friends.
While French food and drink tastings abound in the Irish capital around the holiday, the country’s largest Bastille Day celebration takes place inside a converted church. In partnership with the French Embassy, The Church —a bar and restaurant with faithfully restored pipe organs, woodwork, stained glass, and religious artwork—throws a two-day French-themed party attended by many of the city’s French immigrant community. French DJs perform, attendees participate in theme-appropriate activities such as Pétanque (French boules), and the bar dishes out pastis, wine, crêpes, and saucissons.
Let’s be honest: the typical Bastille listener is not going to read this review. We don’t look to this London synth-pop group for musical innovation or critical merit Rather, Bastille’s biggest strength is its ability to craft songs that are both danceable and tinged with a hint of existential dread, creating the perfect atmosphere for listeners to simultaneously channel and escape from such a feeling. Consequently, given that today’s young adults are the first generation to have grown up with the fear and anxiety promoted by ubiquitous social and news media, it’s no surprise that Bastille has been able to use this formula to become one of the most popular bands of the 2010s.
Lacking any direct orders from Louis XVI, he purportedly received them warmly and promised not to open fire. Yet as the talks dragged on, the people outside grew restless—some may have thought their delegates had been imprisoned.

Almost nothing is left of the Bastille except some remains of its stone foundation that were relocated to the side of Boulevard Henri IV. Historians were critical of the Bastille in the early 19th century, and believe the fortress to have been a relatively well-administered institution, but deeply implicated in the system of French policing and political control during the 18th century.
The armed mob surrounded the Bastille on the morning of July 14. According to The Independent, after nearby soldiers opted not to intervene, 1,000 people broke into the fortress. Unfortunately, there were only seven elderly prisoners” in the Bastille at the time. Nevertheless, the action proved to would-be revolutionaries across France that King Louis was vulnerable.
On their records, Bastille have no problem pointing out all that’s wrong in the world, but they also easily find and highlight what’s beautiful, worthy of celebration, in the middle of all the mess. They work with the hand that’s been dealt to us, and manage to make something poignant, urgent, and meaningful. The technical difficulties that plagued the show throughout the evening would’ve definitely upset most, but in traditional Bastille fashion, they made something beautiful out of struggles; and with Pompeii” they most definitely created a moment that was much more lasting and touching to everyone than the alternative would’ve been if the night had gone by without any difficulty. At the end of the night, the moral of the story is: If everyone works together, with the same mission, there’s no mountain that’s too high to climb, and no doom days that are too rough to get through.
Later on, the band expanded on and refined their approach. For 2016’s Wild World, they added hints of R&B, dance, and rock as well as overtly political songwriting, then took a conceptual and confessional approach on 2019’s gospel- and house music-influenced Doom Days.
Attendees will see France’s tricolor flag, hear the French motto Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité (liberty, equality and fraternity”) and break into singing La Marseillaise—all popular symbols of France that had their origins in the heady days of the French Revolution.
The final act is called ‘The Morning Doesn’t Reach Us’, and is as spirited, daring, and determined as teenagers when they identify the world’s problems and decide to tackle them head on. It’s the final push before the comedown, one that thrusts you into action even if the action is just finding the silver lining amongst all the chaos. The euphoric last dance before the apocalypse comes in the form of Of The Night”, one of Bastille’s best songs to date, which is chosen to close the set before the encore. It asks you to leave it all out on the venue floor, and you have no choice but to gladly oblige.
Lead single Quarter Past Midnight” serves well as the opener of a record about escapism and seizing the moment, but without any standout musical elements or a chorus easy enough to sing along to, it’s a track that will likely be forgotten quickly. Bad Decisions” and The Waves” follow, exhibiting a complete lack of subtlety both sonically and lyrically as Dan Smith laments the bad decisions people are prone to make as they get carried away” and caught up in the waves” of a night out. As the rest of the record plays out, tracks like Million Pieces” and Nocturnal Creatures” throw in EDM instrumentation with a lack of commitment that paints Bastille as timid for the first time in the band’s career.
Their triumphant 2013 ended with another number two UK hit single, “Of The Night,” an engagingly modern twist on two 90s Eurodance classics, Corona’s “Rhythm Of The Night” and Snap!’s “Rhythm Is A Dancer,” a mash-up first included on the band’s “highly illegal” (says Smith) downloadable mixtapes ‘Other People’s Heartache, Vols I & II.’ They released (the highly legal) ‘Vs. (Other People’s Heartache vol 3)’ last December, which featured collaborations with chart-straddling artists like Haim, and up-and-coming talent such as MNEK. The three mixtapes delivered tracks that have topped the Hype Machine chart 12 times.
Like many other iconic revolutionary acts, the storming of the Bastille was not intended as such. Yet, it was a pivotal moment in the unfolding of the French Revolution—the spark that forced the King to begin concessions and emboldened the people’s movement to overthrow him (and later to behead both him and his wife in the hope of burying monarchy forever).
