Man, a lot of my favorite artists don’t make music anymore. Prince is definitely one of my favorite artists. I have a ton of respect for Drake, it’s really hard not to. He’s been going so consistent, so much quality over his entire career. A lot of respect for Drake. Really was inspired by Guns N’ Roses growing up, just how they were revolutionaries of their time. They were rockstars.
Boys and girls, please ready yourselves for your new favorite musician, Bazzi. Now, you might be asking yourself, ” Who is Bazzi? ” which is fine. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know who he was either. Well, at least I thought I didn’t. Then I learned the hit track “Mine” that I’ve been bopping to in my car, at the gym, in various retail stores, etc. etc. is by the 20-year-old musician and now I feel stupid. His voice is serving me a more melodic tone than Post Malone and his fashion style is somewhere between Gwen Stefani circa 1990 and a chill Sam Smith, which means I’m totally in.

The road to this moment in Bazzi’s career started much like other pop artists of this generation: through YouTube. Similar to artists like Justin Bieber, Alessia Cara and his friend Shawn Mendes, Bazzi started out posting videos of himself performing covers of popular songs. Not long after, Bazzi would get his big break with Mine,” which was released last fall. Part of the success of Mine” was its run as a viral meme on Snapchat paired with filters and heart-eyed emojis.

Today, he has one million followers on Instagram, though he currently follows zero people himself. It’s sort of an interesting social media approach for him considering he first broke into the music scene using the old app Vine. Once that became a moot point, Bazzi grew his audience on YouTube.
Soul Searching for me was kind of the first time musically I’ve really looked inward,” he said to HYPEBEAST. My last project was very much driven by fear of love and relationship. Soul Searching was, after the last year and a half, with all of the stuff I’ve experienced, kind of looking inward and taking a look at myself, my feelings, and my own personal happiness, my own personal pain…really talking about that, kind of creating a home and community for people to connect to.
The tenth song on the project is a song called “Conversations With Myself” and half of the song is me literally speaking, like preaching. The first half is just like a spoken-word type feel—actual conversations with myself—but it’s a dark song. Basically, there’s a part of the song where it goes; “Sometimes I think about a younger me. He’d be proud of the man he sees. I guess I’m rich. I made it out my town played it from the thousands. You know, shut it down. Look little Bazzi I’m living out our dreams. Mama cry every time we on the TV. Got a fancy car, got a fancy crib and you couldn’t even dream of this girl that I am with. That’s how we would remember all of our idols and the people that we love? I met ’em at a party, we were all doing drugs. (Laughs) It goes into this crazy thing where it’s like none of that stuff is making me happy basically. That’s what I wanted as a kid, that was like what I lived for, you know? Then you get it and it’s like you realize it’s not what you wanted.
Cosmic, Bazzi’s full-length debut, was released in April 2018 by Atlantic and iamcosmic (his own label). It peaked at #14 on the Billboard 200. The album featured production from Rice N Peas. Oh yeah, he did FaceTime me at the Lakers game. He’s like, Yo, I got this record I want you to jump on.” I’ve known him for a minute, he’s actually such a cool guy. He reached out to me. We were at the same restaurant and he came up to me, before I blew up or anything so he’s a real one. I put a song called Why” out. He’s like, Yo. is this you!?” He showed me his phone. I was like Yeah.” He’s like, This shit is tight bro, you got it.” That’s dope because I had been a fan of him for awhile. We stayed homies over the years. He sent me that record and was like, Let’s crush it,” and we did it.

I see myself as just an artist,” Bazzi says. I obviously, clearly see myself as a musician. Man, I’m just having fun with it. I like to make stuff that sounds good to myself. All of Cosmic was composed of songs that I never even thought I’d put out. I was just in the studio with a really good friend of mine, making songs that I like to listen to, that I’d play for my friends and we would all listen to. There was no commercial appeal to it, or thoughts of ‘I hope people are gonna like this’ or ‘I hope it will fit in somewhere.’ And I think that’s where the uniqueness came in. There’s a million things you can do making music today. It’s impossible to box everything and be like, ‘this belongs here, this sounds like that,’ that’s why genres make no sense now.
With Cosmic,” Bazzi released only three music videos — Mine,” Honest” and Myself.” The visuals are all creative and colorful, showcasing a wide variety of techniques and themes. Loved every bit of the show! Bazzi’s energy was unreal & he kept the crowd wild!! Can’t wait for him to be back soon.
I had the most amazing time at St Andrews Hall for Bazzi shows. I attended two nights back to back! Both shows were great. He has the crowd eating out of his hand from note 1 to the epic hit Mine! I see great things ahead for this young talent.
Following incredible editorial support from Apple Music, the track hit #1 on their Pop Streaming chart and soon-after climbed to #1 on Shazam’s Global Top 100 and both Spotify’s US Viral 50 and Global Viral 50 charts. Several of Bazzi’s hometown fans pretty much ruined, what should of been a great homecoming for him. It was very disappointing, as we were so looking forward to this concert. Weirdly enough, Bazzi was invited to join Timberlake’s tour a few days after encountering the pop star by chance in the Bahamas – but didn’t speak to him.
