One night on Broadway a few years ago, after acting, singing, and sobbing his heart out in Dear Evan Hansen,” Ben Platt was visited backstage by a man in a fur coat. But where there is Com, there must be Dram. Granted, ”The Politician” is first and foremost a comedy, but a comedy with heart and a comedy with genuine messages. The show borrows from most new teen dramas’ and comedies’ angst and feelings of emptiness, loneliness, inadequacy, distance from society as seen in ”13 Reasons Why,” ”Sex Education,” ”Big Mouth,” End of the Fing World” and, of course, ”Dear Evan Hansen.” Georgina Hobart and Payton’s adoptive mother, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow as an all-encompassing and all-loving earth goddess surrounded by her mystical spirit aligning charka crystals, serves as the means of catharsis. With Mother’s reassurance and a short cry, Ben Platt reinvigorates the passion and drive within himself to conquer most obstacles the other billionaire high schoolers and less wealthy – but certainly more deranged – neighborhood sociopaths can throw his way.
But I also had to learn how not to disregard the strengths I had from musical theater, like narrative understanding, emotionality and heightening subject matter so much that you want to sing about it. It was marrying those skills with a new style. I love the mixture we got to.

Like Glee before it, The Politician, Ryan Murphy’s first show for Netflix , isn’t trying to recreate the on-the-ground experience of high school. There isn’t usually a resident teen suffering from The Act-style Munchausen by proxy, and rat poison tends to stay out of races for student body president. Also, 17-year-olds don’t usually look like movie stars in their mid-20s (but then, that’s Hollywood).

I think it’s like 99 blessings and one curse, that experience. Because it opened every possible door, and it was my absolute to-the-T dream come true, as far as all I ever wanted to do was originate a role in a musical, and the Tonys of it all, and the fact that it was the songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It kept topping itself.

Odds are, you’re thinking about Pitch Perfect. Platt played Benji Applebaum, the nerdy roommate with a stellar voice and a penchant for magic. He kicked off the role in the original film, quickly becoming an audience favorite. When the film came back for its second installment, Platt returned to give Benji life once again. He was 19 when the first film came out, though he was already entrenched in theater at that point. He was an extra in Red Riding Hood a few years before that, but for all intents and purposes, Pitch Perfect was his debut into film.
There is always a scattering of anti-Semitic, anti queer comments out there but it’s easy to dismiss it as ‘bots or whatever. But the only time I was ganged up a bit was when I was doing Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway and I decided I didn’t want to go to the stage door after the show anymore because it was becoming a giant crowd every night. Mostly it was a crowd of people who hadn’t even been at the show and they just came to see us afterwards. I was doing a two-hour 45-minute show where I was having to psychically and vocally strain myself and it wasn’t sustainable to go out in New York in the winter and then do the show the next day. People were saying, ‘how dare you, you are a piece of trash, you think you are some big star now, you are disgusting.’ At some point you have to do the best thing for you. It’s hard to really explain and there’s only so many times you can ask for forgiveness. But if you can forgive yourself that’s the main thing.
