Move over, BTS: After the Stateside success of the South Korean boy band , it’s now time for K-pop girl group Blackpink to stage their US takeover. Of the songs released prior to the Kill This Love EP, their previous EP, Square Up, features the hard-hitting club banger ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’, the uplifting pop of ‘Forever Young’, the groove-heavy ‘Really’ and the sassy ‘See Ya Later’. After that, be sure to check out the swaggering electro of their first two singles, ‘Whistle’ and ‘Boombayah’, the thumping house anthem ‘Playing With Fire’ and the acoustic ballad ‘Stay’, before acquainting yourself with the moombahton-laced bubblegum pop of standalone single ‘As If It’s Your Last’. The girls also featured on Dua Lupa’s ‘Kiss And Make Up’, which appeared on the deluxe edition of her debut album and peaked at No.93 in the Billboard charts.
The quartet will become the first K-pop girl group to play Coachella 2019 on Friday, when they will rock the festival with the likes of Childish Gambino, Janelle Monáe and Kacey Musgraves. Blackpink will also hit the stage on April 19 during the second weekend of Coachella.

Blackpink’s upcoming schedule is packed with international opportunities to connect with their fans, who are called BLINKs,” a portmanteau of black” and pink.” Later this month, they will become the first female K-pop group to play at the Coachella music festival , before continuing the North American, European, and Australian legs of their first world tour.
When it comes to albums, Blackpink have so far released two EPs: Square Up in 2018, and Kill This Love in 2019. In Japan they released an EP Blackpink and a studio album Blackpink in your area. A lot of songs overlap between these various releases, but your safest bet to get the whole is to listen to Blackpink in your area.
The group’s debut EP, Square One, dropped in August 2016 and featured two hit tracks, Whistle and Boombayah. It set Blackpink on course to become the huge force they are today, and was followed by a string of singles and mini-releases, including their collaboration with Dua Lipa, Kiss and Make Up, which was released in October 2018. A month later, they released their debut album, In Your Area.
Becoming an ‘idol’ in South Korea also carries with it the burden of needing to seem astonishingly perfect. One could argue this might be why bands like SixBomb go through extensive plastic surgery (they featured both their before and after appearances in the video for their song ‘Becoming Prettier’) or why the lead singer of boy band SHINee was found dead in his apartment in 2017 with a note saying he was broken from inside”. It also leads to their members having to portray images that are jointly virginal and also deeply available: one of the first big scandals involved Jong Hyun back in 2010, back when South Korea’s paparazzi started to boom. K-Pop fans can be known to be particularly judgmental of acts: take for example the infamous ‘black ocean’ of 2008, when the ur-Girls Generation, SNSD, came on stage to a purposeful blackout of the entire audience’s glowsticks as a protest. You can hear them fighting back the tears as they perform to what looks like an empty stadium.
Shortly after the video’s premiere on Feb. 12, 2019, BLACKPINK made their American television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” performing the song on the 55th anniversary of The Beatles American television debut in the same theater.
Kill This Love” is currently closing in on 131 million views as I write this post, so don’t expect it to become YouTube’s most-viewed music video anytime soon. Despacito” (6.1 billion), Shape of You” (4.1 billion), See You Again” (4 billion), Uptown Funk” (3.5 billion) and Gangnam Style” (3.3 billion) are still holding onto their spots with more than two years of views under their belt each — even Baby Shark may be hard to surpass with its 2.5 billion views as of today.

Blackpink’s U.S. momentum, in which they burst onto the scene in seemingly the blink of an eye — though the group has been around since 2016 — is a fortuitous combination of industry support, changing listening habits and the group’s own special sauce. Blackpink’s four members — 21-year-old Lisa, 22-year-old Rose, 23-year-old Jennie and 24-year-old Jisoo — are breathtaking performers, executing intense choreography while rap-singing largely Korean lyrics for songs that sound made for U.S. radio regardless of the language barrier.

Blackpink are no exception, though even in a few short years the vision of their videos has grown a lot: while the video for Boombayah serves you early 00s Rihanna, or even Britney and Madonna’s ‘Me Against The Music’, ‘Kill This Love’ is just a huge camp treat that sits somewhere between ‘Bad Romance’, ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’ and the Pussycat Dolls’ ‘Don’t Cha’. It also contains the classic turn-of-the-millennium image of a woman crying while driving a car, a trope I’m glad to see the return of.
