This summer there have been many of those opportunities, with Perri and Colbie Caillat co-headlining a national tour that stops tonight at the Greek Theatre. Neither one of us thought it would be this intense.

American singer-songwriter and musician, born 19 August 1986 in Pennsylvania, USA. A: The good news is I do that naturally. So I did get successful off a song that I do naturally. I do ballads and love songs when I’m not even trying, when I’m just writing a song for me. So I’m just really fortunate that that’s what broke for me because that is my default. I think it was more of a challenge to give my audience a happy song. I wasn’t gonna fake it. I remember people asking all the time, Can’t you just do something uptempo?” I was like, If I’m in love, yeah, but I’m not gonna fake it.” I think people see right through that stuff.
It was just songs for me. I didn’t really grow up listening to albums as much as I grew up finding songs and liking songs specifically. I never really cared about the artist either. I just cared if I liked the song, if it sounded good, it was good. My music library was just a wide variety of different artists, not particularly multiple tracks, maybe just one by him, one by her. So I kind of had more of a melting pot going on.
Still searching, Perri moved to Los Angeles with a suitcase and a guitar and recommitted herself to being a singer and a songwriter. She posted YouTube videos of herself performing her own songs, as well as covers, and shared her struggles in her uniquely humorous way. A video of one of her original compositions, Tragedy” (which is included on lovestrong.), caught the attention of Bill Silva Management, who signed on to represent her. And so began Perri’s charmed odyssey. She will hit the road for spring tour with James Blunt as she awaits the May 10th release of lovestrong.
It’s made us closer than we’ve been. Writing this record was probably one of the easiest records to write. We’re all on the same page as far as what we wanted the record to be about because we were all affected by some of those situations that we’ve been dealing with. And honestly, when we did the record, we pretty much had everything done before we even got into the studio, which has never happened before. It was a really good experience.
It was definitely a cool thing. We had our friend Paul Miner engineer it and he’s always awesome to work with because he is a fun loving dude and it’s always a fun time at his studio. I think it was one of those things where we’ve just been a band for so long now, I feel like we know how to write our songs. Before we went into the studio, we had all the songs done and we actually called up Neal Avron who produced our last few records and we just wanted his opinion. He had like one note for one song, which was awesome and it was a really big confidence booster, to be able to know that we can go in and not have another cook in the kitchen.
That’s valid. I’m still a new mom — she turns one Jan. 17 — and I’m only just learning about balancing life as an artist, mom, wife, sibling, daughter. I definitely think it’s trial and error. Some women go back to work right away, and those women are my heroes. I was so fortunate to get to spend every minute of Carmella’s first nine months with her before I went to Nashville to make this album. But Carmella comes first, and I will be there for everything she needs. Plus, I have a great team of family and friends — and my husband’s family — there to help me. It’s all hands on deck, and because I’m not living in California, everyone is nearby and close, which is great. So I won’t take all the credit. That said, mentally, it is challenging doing all the things I used to do, and now add ‘mom’ to that list.
Together with Colbie Caillat was the best concert I have been to. Christina is full of energy and passion for her songs that continues until her final song is over. Currently on tour with OneRepublic, Perri will perform Thursday, Aug. 21, at the UNO Lakefront Arena.
A: My favorite photo editing app is called Afterlight. I put every single photo through that. And I’m obsessed with Instagram; I’m on it every day. Also, without my voice memo app, I would not have any of the music that I have written. (laughs) It would just float off into space if it came out of my head and I didn’t record it.
Perri spends a lot of time interacting with fans via social media, providing behind-the-scenes pictures and snippets of new music while she’s recording and on the road. Twitter chats are a lot of fun, Perri says.
It feels wrong to be too hard on her, though, because if you believe the backstory, Perri has only been doing this professionally for 18 months. One day, apparently, she was waitressing in Los Angeles and posting her songs on YouTube; the next, the ballad Jar of Hearts was played on the US talent show So You Think You Can Dance , and the labels that had previously ignored her were competing to sign her. Both the single and her album, lovestrong, went top 10 in the US and UK.
A: I think it’s both. I have definitely noticed that it’s where I put my stuff. Everybody has heavy stuff. When I meet someone in real life and when I’m on stage, I’m really bubbly and kind of dorky, to be quite honest. And people are a little shocked that I’m not very dark and kind of introverted because some of my music can seem that way. I always giggle and say, Well, that’s where I put it.” Some people work out. Some people do sports. Some people paint pictures. I feel like most people have a release for that heavy stuff. And for me, since I was 16, I’ve been putting it into music. That’s why it comes so naturally for me because I’d doing that no matter what, if anyone was listening or not.
These days, with four EPs and two studio albums under her belt—including her 2011 Atlantic debut LP Lovestrong and 2014’s Head or Heart—Perri has evolved in a multitude of ways to express herself through song, whether she’s working solo or collaborating with others.
It’s exhausting,” Perri says of life on the road, which often involves traveling on a bus with her bandmates for weeks at a time or waking up in the wee hours to catch a flight to the next city. The current Girls Night Out, Boys Can Come Too tour, for example, will have Perri, Caillat and rising star Rachel Platten performing at 37 venues in 51 nights before it wraps in Vancouver on Aug. 30.

The esteemed guitarist has gone through a variety of record labels, management deals, and turmoil with his four founding bandmates — he even left Aerosmith for a stint in the late ‘70s to pursue his own band, the Joe Perry Project. For now, Perri says she’s taking a break from love. These days, life is too hectic to focus on a relationship, anyway. caught up with Perri who told us all about overcoming her vocal cord scare and how it’s impacted her life as a singer. She also touched on songwriting woes and her method for tuning out the pressures of having to outdo herself when writing her second album.
As an unsigned artist, Christina once dreamed of making a career out of performing and recording her deeply personal yet pop-friendly songs. Then one day four years ago, one of her recordings was featured on the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance, and suddenly she stopped dreaming the dream—and began living it.

A lot of the stuff that is written about in the book Walk This Way came out lopsided because it was a very complicated time with our ex-manager Tim Collins at that point. I think that a lot of people would be surprised at how out of wack things got at that point, considering the chronic success we were achieving in spite of what was going on behind the scenes. I mean he worked out great when we first got together, but he kind of stayed in the same place and we were growing. It just didn’t work out anymore. … My relationship with Steven Tyler, with the other guys, with management, you don’t have to be a rock and roll fan to appreciate some of the hardships and the hard times that I had to go through. And that was one of the reasons I wanted to write the book. So there were a lot of things in there that I think people can relate to, especially growing up in that time.
I think that my writing thing with Steven is a lot more on and off than it used to be. I think as far as my own writing goes, it’s stayed pretty much the same. It still starts off with something that catches my ear and then I’ll bring it up to the next level. … I’ll have something and then I’m writing for Aerosmith and then I’ll play it for Steven and see if it’s something he gets or doesn’t. If he hears something that he can wrap a melody around, we’ll go for it. And that’s how it’s always been. In some ways it’s stayed the same but we’ve all kind of gone off and we’re living in different lives. Steven is going to go off and do his first solo album. I kind of record more where I will set aside a few hours every day, make sure I play, make sure I have the tape recorder going and just keep creating.
