In the preview to this Advanced Uncorrected Proof, Gilbert writes that she wants this book to “go down like a ch”go Vivian Morris is an elderly woman recounting the days of her youth in this frolic through 1940’s New York. She’s a nineteen-year-old virgin when she journeys to the city to live in her Aunt Peg’s crumbling theater, the Lily Playhouse. Hers is a tale of late-night carousing and rambunctious sexual exploration, followed by war, maturation, and the mundane trivialities of becoming an adult.
Over the course of the game, River City Girls players will eventually run into Billy and Jimmy Lee as well as Marian Kelly, who runs an accessory store called Swaggage. The Double Dragon protagonists themselves are easily recognizable, even with new voiceovers from online personalities The Game Grumps, but Marian is easy to miss. This isn’t because she resides in one of the game’s secret areas, but because she looks different enough to be confused for an entirely different character.
JT: Being in a group to me is bigger than being one person. It’s two people, so it’s two different ways it can go. You can like her personality, you can like my personality and it’s all going to come as one. When you’re one person it’s hard to grab people. Us being two girls, the way we talk, the way we act, we’re just us. You and your best friend can be like we’re the City Girls.

The last time we saw a woman take Miami by storm was two decades ago when Trina introduced herself on Trick Daddy’s Nann Nigga.” Now, the City Girls are a fixture of South Florida’s music scene, with a buzz brewing as fast as their Quality Control labelmates. The group’s JT and Yung Miami already told us they weren’t checking for broke boys in their debut single Fuck Dat Nigga,” released last December as part of QC’s Control The Streets compilation. In less than six months, they’ve managed to generate a following for their ability to be completely unfiltered in their penchant for men who gon’ swipe them Visas.” Delivering schemer anthems like Where Da Bag At?” and Run Dem Bands Up,” the City Girls are clearing out bank accounts and couldn’t care less.
CITY OF GIRLS is an evocative coming-of-age retrospective told by Vivian at the age of 95, in 2010. Vivian has had plenty of years for reflection and has plenty of outrageous and poignant stories to share. Her stories are rich and memorable, like her escapades at Vassar that resulted in her finishing next to last in the freshman class. My favorite story was the one of her first sexual encounter at the age of 19 not long after her arrival in New York. The encounter was delightedly arranged for her by the theater showgirls and was laugh out loud funny.
This is a long book and I kept waiting for Vivian to get to the point but she is the point. This book is about her, with part of the book focusing on the theater world and WWII, also. I could have used a lot less about Vivian but since she is narrating the story and she’s the star of her world, that was not going to happen. I enjoyed much of the book and wish I could have liked Vivian better but I must say that this story is true to the personality of Vivian and maybe shouldn’t have been written any other way.
The City Girls notched vocals on Drake ‘s “In My Feelings,” which would rule the Hot 100 last summer for 10 weeks and break several streaming records thanks to a viral dance challenge that took over social media and helped jumpstart the careers of Shiggy and DaniLeigh. The Hebrew Bible scholar in me has to say, we have to be attentive to the fact that race was not operative in the biblical world, right? So these distinctions of black and white are not there in the Bible. What is there for me as a Bible scholar is that there are communities that were being formed and there are some people who are celebrated and belong in the text and there are some people who don’t. So it’s not about talking about black women in the Bible, but it is about how black women can find themselves in the Bible.
Yung Miami: I thought she was playing. I was like, Girl, leave me alone.” I didn’t think she was dead serious. I was like, We don’t even got no studio to go to,” and she was like, Well we finna go find one.” I was thinking, Girl, stop playing on my phone.” But she was like, For real, I got two beats,” and I was like, Alright, let’s do it.” We went to a studio and we were in the studio like all night, but it was just like a game. We were just playing.

While one half of City Girls was putting in the legwork, J.T.’s pending charges were causing her to lose sight of their vision. I’d never been in trouble before and I thought I was never going to get out,” says J.T. She’s calling me every day telling me people are playing our song, but I was in jail, I didn’t want to hear that.” Yung Miami’s social strategy was enough to start booking shows at local venues like Heads or Tails and G5ive after J.T.’s release. In a matter of months they would meet the man who would change their circumstances: Coach K.
Early reviews I read noted there was a lot of it in these pages. It’s right up there with politics and religion at the dinner table in polite conversation. There are girls and women still schooled in the ‘you’re not supposed to initiate, enjoy, or have too much of it’ belief.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late ’60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most.
