PERSONAL: Zach Williams … Born Jan. 5, 2001 … Son of Keli and Rickey Williams, former Arkansas linebacker (1984-87) … Has two siblings, Sydni and Shelbi.

Zach Williams has released a special EP today (Friday, Sept. 14), titled Survivor: Live From Harding Prison. Recorded live earlier this summer from the Nashville-based prison where Williams performed acoustically along with Bethel Music’s No Longer Slaves,” the project was produced in partnership with local non-profit, Men of Valor.

Before embarking on his solo career in the Christian genre, singer-songwriter Zach Williams , 41, from Jonesboro, Arkansas, fronted a rock band, Zach Williams & The Reformation, which launched in 2007.

The Florida native and his wife have been a part of prison ministry for several years, so recording in the facility wasn’t foreign to Williams, who recalled feeling “unequipped” to minister when he first started visiting prisons.

Christian singer Zach Williams may be famous for his popular songs like ‘Chainbreaker’ and ‘Old Church Choir’ but before making music for God, Zach struggled with addiction.

Accountability. Like you just said, community. It’s funny, I’m on the road so much now that a lot of the time I’m out on the road on a Sunday. So the only time that I get to watch or hear church is when I check the livestream out of the church I would go to when I was living in Arkansas or find ones from different pastors. I’ll also listen to podcasts. It always seems to be something that feels like it’s directed at what I’m going through in that moment, that day, or that week. I’ve always said it’s no coincidence whenever you hear those things. God is actually speaking to you through that. I think a lot of it is just getting with people who have the same beliefs and values as you do. I think that’s kind of what this band is – you’ve got a bunch of guys who want to be held accountable for everything they’re doing.

As a husband, father, singer, recording artist, songwriter and worship leader, Zach Williams is already making history. Achieving two consecutive radio No. 1 hits as a debut artist (Chain Breaker,” Old Church Choir”) Williams’ music comes from a place of humility and honesty as his songs are a direct reflection of God’s redemption in his life.

Never in his wildest dreams did Zach think he would be in this place of writing and recording music in the Christian music industry, especially from years of hard living on the road while in a rock & roll band. He thought his life was fulfilling and he was doing what he had always wanted to do, but that left him empty, lonely, and further away from God and his family than ever before. For years he sought meaning and fulfillment in the unhealthy, and sometimes dangerous, lifestyle he was living.

Zach Williams was raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas, under the love and protection of family and friends. He was raised in the church, his mom sang on praise teams and his dad led worship services.

Williams said he was so lost in his life as a rock musician that he wasn’t sure he wanted to perform anymore. Then he returned home to Arkansas and found his love of music again.

Williams grew up in a Christian home where both his mother and father were heavily involved in church. But as a teenager he drifted away from the values his parents had instilled in him.

The song, Williams’ debut single for Provident Label Group, held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Christian Airplay Radio chart for 15 consecutive weeks, setting the record for the longest-running No. 1 for a debut single from a debut artist.

Each song featured on the six-song project, Survivor,” Old Church Choir,” To The Table,” No Longer Slaves,” Fear Is A Liar” and Chain Breaker,” were filmed with interviews from some of the inmates sharing their personal testimonies. Video footage will release weekly on Williams’ YouTube channel, and a devotional will be available in the coming weeks through YouVersion, written by a pastor with Men of Valor.

He was raised in an amazing family that took him to church each week, but as he got older, he fell into the wrong crowd. Zach started to drink and do drugs. When an injury ended his basketball career, Zach decided to learn guitar and took up music. He even started a band that toured Europe. He eventually met his wife, Crystal, but he refused to change his lifestyle of drugs ad alcohol. During this time, his parents continued to pray for him and his family.

But he did visit a prison in Arkansas, where he and his wife told their stories of what God was doing in their lives. The response is something he never will forget. The men and women he visited in prison had made bad decisions – something he related to – and he said his heart broke for them. That was the day, he said, he learned the true meaning of grace.

The guys talk about how the band was birthed out of community and that it was at family gatherings in the early days of their friendship that they would grab their guitars and start writing songs. The songs came quickly and easily” says Thomas and they were simply an overflow of what the Lord was doing in our lives individually and as a community.” In 2016, they decided to record an album of the songs that they had been writing under the name HOLY MNTN and before long they were getting invites from all over the country for them to perform their music.

He quit music for several months, returned home to Arkansas, started working for his dad in the construction industry and found his way back to church with his family — he had since remarried. He would become his church’s worship minister and the director of the Refuge Campus of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro.

While driving through Spain with his band, he heard the song ‘Redeemed’ by Big Daddy Weave come on the radio and he felt God speak to him. After that, Zach turned his whole life around and started living for the Lord.
