Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. The cause of death was covered up by his family; but, it is suspected that it was from an overdose of prescription drugs that caused his heart to stop. Elvis returned to television on May 12 as a guest on The Frank Sinatra Timex Special – ironic for both stars, given Sinatra’s not-so-distant excoriation of rock and roll. Also known as Welcome Home Elvis, the show had been taped in late March, the only time all year Elvis performed in front of an audience. Parker secured an unheard-of $125,000 fee for eight minutes of singing. The broadcast drew an enormous viewership.
Miller, James. Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock and Roll, 1947-1977. Fireside; 2000. No eccentric rock star’s image is complete without an exotic pet, and as the king of all rock stars, Elvis Presley’s was one of a kind. The king owned a very active pet chimpanzee named Scatter.
When he returned from his two-year hitch in the Army in 1960, the king of rock ‘n’ roll essentially retired from live performing, confining himself to making movies (which were growing steadily worse) and recording disposable pop songs (that were no longer reaching the charts). A much-praised television comeback special on NBC in December 1968 had put him back on the radar. But when he finally returned to the stage for the first time in more than eight years, for a four-week engagement at Las Vegas’ new International Hotel, there was no guarantee he could still deliver onstage.
In the mid-1930s, in the middle of the Great Depression, East Tupelo was a haven for poor sharecroppers and factory workers whose meager resources still largely outstripped those of Elvis’ parents. Not only did Vernon and his wife, Gladys, rely on welfare to pay the $15 that Dr. William Robert Hunt charged for delivering Elvis and his stillborn twin brother, Jesse Garon, but neighbours and friends also had to provide them with diapers.

Presley’s ’70s recordings, like most of his ’60s work, are the focus of divergent critical opinion. Some declare them to be, when Elvis was on, the equal of anything he did, especially in terms of artistic diversity. It’s true that the material was pretty eclectic, running from country to blues to all-out rock to gospel (Presley periodically recorded gospel-only releases, going all the way back to 1957). At the same time, his vocal mannerisms were often stilted, and the material – though not nearly as awful as that ’60s soundtrack filler – sometimes substandard. Those who are serious Elvis fans will usually find this late-period material to hold only a fraction of the interest of his ’50s classics.
Just two weeks before Elvis Presley passed away on August 16, 1977, the book Elvis: What Happened? was released on August, 1. The book was written by three of his former bodyguards and detailed many secrets about his personal life.

In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Drafted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. Years of prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate at the age of 42. Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century.
While it was certain that Presley’s fans already owned all his records, that didn’t stop the Elvis’ Golden Records compilation from storming the charts in 1958. Before he left he starred in King Creole, his fourth (and best) movie, and released the soundtrack, which included the outstanding ‘Hard Headed Woman’.

Though Elvis would have many love interests in his life, he met the love of his life while on duty Germany. He was 24 years old at the time, but that didn’t stop him from falling in love with the 14-year-old daughter of a US Navy pilot (you know who). Bold move, Elvis.

December 25, 1974 – Elvis spends a quiet Christmas at Graceland after trying unsuccessfully to talk Priscilla into spending the Holidays with him and the rest of the family.
Curiously, cut from the 2009 issue of his critically acclaimed film King Creole (1958) was his performance of “Hard Headed Woman” a #1 hit for Elvis at the time of the film’s release. A rare occurrence, possibly, the only time in film history that an essential musical number has been cut from a film, over a half-century after the film’s release. Added in its place in 2009 is the then previously unseen stripper’s sequence with the song “Banana”. In 1958 the “Banana” scene, complete with female stripper, with its obvious phallic reference, would have been “too much” for the censors and mainstream America.
With a lot of entertainers making a living mimicking Elvis, Jimmy Buffett wrote a song called “Elvis Imitators” making mention of a few of Elvis’ films, song titles, and mannerisms. Elvis gave his parents (when he was only 22 at the time) a budget of $100,000 and asked them to find a farm-style” home. On March 1957, Presley purchased the famous landmark for $102,500.

The Beatles , all big Elvis fans, displaced Presley as the biggest rock act in the world in 1964. What’s more, they did so by writing their own material and playing their own instruments; something Elvis had never been capable of, or particularly aspired to do. They, and the British and American groups the Beatles influenced, were not shy about expressing their opinions, experimenting musically, and taking the reins of their artistic direction into their own hands. The net effect was to make Presley, still churning out movies in Hollywood as psychedelia and soul music became the rage, seem irrelevant, even as he managed to squeeze out an obscure Dylan cover (“Tomorrow Is a Long Time”) on a 1966 soundtrack album.
December 19, 1957 – Elvis receives his draft notice and is ordered to report in Memphis on January 20. 4. Elvis liked his meat well-done. One of his favorite expressions was “That’s burnt, man.” Whether he was talking about a steak or a song, something “burnt” was good.
Many a celebrity is subject to a reversal of fortune with an untimely death. All that was once good about the person now becomes bad. Virtues give way to vices. Character takes a back seat to calamity. Though Presley’s cause of death was originally claimed to be a heart attack, later toxicology reports identified high levels of several pharmaceutical drugs in his system. Many doubted it. After all, President Richard Nixon had met with Elvis and given him a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. (There’s a photo to prove it.) Others just accepted the story as another drug-related death of a rock and roll star. How the cause of death changed from heart attack to prescription-drug poisoning typifies the pattern of a celebrity’s fall from grace.
