Elvis left the building for good on the night of August 16, 1977, at the age of 42 in his bathroom at his home in Graceland. Mystery swirls around his death and theories live on to this day — that he faked his death to escape fame (a common thread with musical legends, such as Tupac and Jim Morrison ). But Elvis’ lifestyle had finally caught up to him as he died of a heart attack, and toxicology reports indicate over a dozen different drugs in his system.

When Elvis made his third Sullivan appearance in January of 1957, Ed Sullivan surprised Elvis by telling him on camera that his show had never had a better experience with a name act, and said ‘I wanted to say to Elvis and the country that this is a real decent, fine boy’.

Elvis Presley was the first real rock and roll star. A white southerner who singing blues laced with country and country tinged with gospel, Presley brought together music from both sides of the color line. Presley performed this music with a natural hip swiveling sexuality that made him a teen idol and a role model for generations of cool rebels. Presley was repeatedly dismissed as vulgar, incompetent and a bad influence. However the force of his music and image signaled to the mainstream culture it was time for a change.

While their precious treasure was stationed abroad, RCA kept Presley’s name current with a sequence of dusted-off material culminating in the stylishly packaged Elvis’ Gold Records Volume 2 (aka the fiendishly ad-friendly 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong).

In addition to having the ability to rock out like no other, Elvis Presley was known to be gentle at times, especially in his younger years. It is widely believed that the king didn’t like spending nights by himself.

Over the years, Presley starred in 33 films, sold more than one billion records, earned 14 Grammy nomination and three wins. More than 100 of his songs earned Top 40 spots and in 1986 he was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

By 1955 Elvis had recorded 5 songs for Sun Records and gained some popularity in the South. What he also acquired was a new manager, Col. Tom Parker. Giving Parker his due – the man knew how to market. Parker launched a campaign aimed at garnishing national exposure for him.

Elvis’ body was placed in a family crypt in Memphis on Thursday, August 18, 1977. Eleven days later, however, an attempt was made to steal his body but the plan failed and three men were charged with trespassing and released on bond. No, because he is a Beatle fan. I mean, what do you expect?? I think he likes Paul better than me … I have the funny feeling he wishes Paul was his dad. But unfortunately he got me … It must be hard to be son of anybody. He is a bright kid and he’s into music. I didn’t encourage him, but he’s already got a band in school. But they sing rock’n’roll songs, ’cause their teacher is my age. So he teaches them Long Tall Sally” and a couple of Beatles numbers. He likes Barry White and he likes Gilbert ‘ Sullivan. He likes Queen, though I haven’t heard them yet. He turns me on to music.

He met with Robert Mitchum to discuss the possibility of starring together in Thunder Road (1958), but unfortunately Tom Parker ‘s demands for Presley’s salary could not be met. Elvis Presley, the undisputed King of rock ‘n roll, was born on January 8, 1935, in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi.

By the end of 1952, the Presleys’ combined income exceeded the maximum allowed by the Memphis Housing Authority, so the family moved from Lauderdale Courts to a rooming house on nearby Saffarans Street, and then an apartment at 462 Alabama Street, opposite the Courts. Though the Presley’s were forced to leave the housing project, they chose to remain in the same neighbourhood.

Little Elvis,” as the King used to refer to his manhood, was rarely alone. And when Sergeant Presley (because in his brief two years, he was promoted) was discharged in March of 1960, his return journey home saw the train he was riding mobbed at every stop from New Jersey to Tennessee.

As early as 1955, when he was 20 and considered an up-and-coming country-western singer, articles about the young singer often mentioned that he liked to down several cheeseburgers at one sitting. In the late 1960s, an article in Esquire magazine took a sarcastic but lighthearted tone when describing Elvis’ favorite snack of peanut butter and mashed banana sandwiches washed down with plenty of Pepsi. Elvis always had these eating habits, and age and lack of exercise had as much to do with his weight gain as anything else.

They were married on May 1, 1967 , in a brief ceremony in their suite at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. The flow of formulaic movies and assembly-line soundtracks rolled on. It was not until October 1967, when the Clambake soundtrack LP registered record low sales for a new Elvis album, that RCA executives recognized a problem. ‘By then, of course, the damage had been done’, as historians Connie Kirchberg and Marc Hendrickx put it. ‘Elvis was viewed as a joke by serious music lovers and a has-been to all but his most loyal fans’.

What you probably don’t know is that Streisand’s first choice for the role was none other than Elvis Presley. It was reported that Elvis was gung-ho about doing the film. During this time, his film career was heading downhill, and he hadn’t had a Top 10 single since Burning Love, three years earlier.

The King of rock & roll dead at 42! I was 19 at the time and working at HMV records, the largest record store outside of London. I wasn’t important, in fact as well as making the tea, I worked the shrink-wrapping machine that all records were covered in before going out in the racks. This was well before the days of CD’s. Our stock consisted of vinyl, cassettes and 8-track cartridges.

It’s a strange story … I just remember sitting there and him playing the bass. And me thinking, It’s Elvis! It’s Elvis!!” It’s actually Elvis. He looked great then, no weight on him. He looked good. And he was shy a bit. I’d like to see him in Vegas ’cause that’s where he’s supposed to be at home. But I’d be embarrassed if they said, And there in the audience is John Lennon.” I’d hate it. I’m dying to see him.

On January 10, 1956, Elvis made his first recordings for RCA in Nashville. Extending the singer’s by now customary backup of Scotty Moore, Bill Black, and D.J. Fontana, RCA enlisted pianist Floyd Cramer, guitarist Chet Atkins, and three background singers, including Gordon Stoker of the popular Jordanaires quartet, to fill out the sound. The session produced the moody, unusual Heartbreak Hotel , released as a single on January 27. Colonel Parker finally brought Elvis to national television, booking him on CBS’s Stage Show for six appearances over two months. The program, produced in New York, was hosted on alternate weeks by big band leaders and brothers Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. After his first appearance, on January 28, Elvis stayed in town to record at RCA’s New York studio The sessions yielded eight songs, including a cover of Carl Perkins’ rockabilly anthem Blue Suede Shoes.

Elvis was conscripted into the United States Army in 1958 where he served until 1960. By then, he had fancy cars, women across the country losing their minds over him, many toys, and over $400,000 cash in a bank account. He had to leave it all behind while he fulfilled his duty to the country.

Within a few minutes, the ambulance neared Graceland. The vehicle made a hard left through the opened iron gates and up the curved driveway to the white-columned portico. One of Presley’s bodyguards allowed the two medics to enter the mansion. With equipment in hand, they rushed up the stairs to the bathroom where they encountered nearly a dozen people huddled over a man in his pajamas, lying prostrate on his back. The medics quickly moved in. Initially, they didn’t recognize the victim, but then noticed the thick, graying sideburns and the large medallion around the neck and realized it was Elvis Presley. His skin was dark blue and cold to the touch. Checking for vital signs, the medics detected no pulse and no response to light from his pupils. They quickly prepped him for transport.

Unlike some artists, whose contributions are only recognized after they’re gone, the changes Presley brought to the world were felt while he was alive. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, his family later moved to Memphis, where he was exposed to blues and jazz.
