Fantasia Barrino may have won the third season of American Idol with “I Believe,” but it was her passionate take on George Gershwin’s “Summertime” that had everyone talking for weeks. Chernabog makes an appearance in Disney at Dawn, the second book of The Kingdom Keepers series. Though he is mentioned numerous times throughout, his major role is at the end of the book, where it is revealed that he has been trapped by Disney Imagineers in the form of the Yeti in the Disney’s Animal Kingdom attraction Expedition Everest. He is freed by Maleficent, and flies out of the mountain, before escaping capture and escaping from the park. Throughout history there have been books written, films made, or art created that by today’s standards are no longer politically correct, or if dissected could be looked at in a an entirely different way.
Luckily we have Night on Bald Mountain and Awe Maria to close the film. And they are awe-inspiring. The devil on his lone mountain top is one of the scariest images Disney has ever produced and the rest of the segment is equally haunting, eerie and threatening. Which is why the following tranquility and quietness of Awe Maria works so well and allows you to drift over the finish line with a smile on your face and peace in your heart.

Leopold Stokowski and James Levine are the conductors in the films with the four families of musical instruments. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the script based on the “Night on Bald Mountain” segment of Disney’s 1940 animated film.
The costs of Fantasia rose, and rose, during production. One year after production started, costs rose to four times the amount a Silly Symphony would normally cost. Walt struggled to find more funds, and realized that when the movie was released, that the viewer should truly hear” the music. Thus, began the creation of Fantasound.” A new revolutionary sound system, especially made just for Fantasia. This new system would ensure proper sound synchronization, and quality.
As a little girl, I always gravitated to the richness in Aretha (Franklin)’s vocal. You still can’t deny the excitement that comes when you hear a James Brown squall or overlook the fight and courage found in a Sam Cooke track. Black music has heavily influenced every genre of music and should be recognized for the impact and contribution it has made to music around the world.
A character in the Sorcerer Mickey outfit walks down the stairs to the music of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Mentioned by Andrew ‘Keefe as a possible answer to a question about the first Disney film to be adapted as a Broadway musical asked when Hannah and the Chaser go head to head.
Eight segments of fantastic imagery that stood the test of time with it’s music from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Leopold Stowkowski. See below for a list of Fantasia’s GRAMMY Awards history. The concept and some of the episodes are tainted with kitsch, but there’s no other animated film with its scope and ambition.
It can be hard to remember that at one time Walt Disney’s aims for animation were equal parts commercial and artistic success if “Fantasia” (for awhile at least) failed at the first it mostly succeeds at the second. The expository scenes between each animation piece are utterly pointless but they’re easy to ignore.
Then comes “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” in which Mickey Mouse is the Promethean little guy whose magic gets away from him – the broom he enchants into carrying pails of water turns into a horde of brooms, and the water turns into a tidal wave. Some kids get edgy with this one. At the end, Mickey’s master, the sorcerer himself, returns to set everything right, and a moment later we see a shadowy Mickey climb the podium to shake Stokowski’s hand. The conductor as sorcerer, sorcerer as conductor.
Since the Disney animators were at their peak, the Hanna-Barberians of the Saturday morning cartoon world have betrayed their art form. They’ve persuaded generations of children that animation is outlines moving against static, shadowless backgrounds, ghosts in a desert – and only one ghost moves at a time. In Disney animation, there’s a density and heft to things, a rounded, final fullness to the potbellies on the dwarves, the singing trees, the tires on Donald Duck’s convertible. They have a richness that seems edible, but not edible like a bluefish or an eggplant – Disney objects don’t have inner workings or guts. Instead, there is something confectionary about them, like candy. Like marzipan, for instance. You get the feeling that if you sliced open a Disney mushroom or mountain, it would be the same marzipanny stuff, all the way through.
Fantasia is a 1940 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and released by Walt Disney Productions With story direction by Joe Grant and Dick Huemer , and production supervision by Ben Sharpsteen , it is the third Disney animated feature film The film consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski , seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film’s Master of Ceremonies , providing a live-action introduction to each animated segment.
Ben lists the film among Disney’s masterpieces. Basically, there’s levels to why Black women sometimes find it hard to find true partnership, but blaming it entirely on us ain’t the move. Mr. Hankey puts on a wizard hat and red robe the same as Mickey Mouse’s in this film, he then commands the sewage like the objects in this film to similar music.
In this scene based on the story of Noah’s Ark, Donald Duck is Noah’s assistant and Daisy Duck is Donald’s wife. Elgar ‘s rousing music underscores Donald Duck’s trials and tribulations as he gathers the animals to board the ark.
Fantasia was comprised of eight animated segments that were set to pieces of classical music. Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky first created the music used in the “Night on Bald Mountain” section in 1867, and it was arranged by Leopold Stokowski for the film, introducing the now-well-known music to a much wider audience.
Apprentice, a fairy tale which had been interpreted as a poem by Goethe, and a concert piece by French Composer, Paul Dukas. Mickey was cast as the apprentice whose misuse of the sorcerer’s powers wreaks disaster.

Nutcracker Suite, on the other hand, is fantastic. Beautiful images, perfectly accompanied by one of the most recognizable pieces of music there is. After seeing this segment once, it’s hard not to see fairies and seasons dancing around whenever you hear the piece.
The Hippopotamus servants are Hyacinth Hippo’s maids and all wear pink (Taylor described the hippos as being “dressed to represent the brilliant light of noon day”). They dance during the afternoon. After she wakes, they help her into her ballerina dress. When she falls asleep they help her get onto a bed, then they leave the stage. In the final scene they are found by the Alligators and forced to dance. The Hippopotami have a cameo appearance in Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas , in which they try to help Daisy Duck be the champion in ice skating. At the climax they ice skate with the Alligators.
A fascinating experimental film that explores music and imagination, Fantasia is a triumph of vision. Combining the talents of the Walt Disney Studio and the Philadelphia Orchestra, several pieces of classical music are brought to life through a series of animated vignettes. With the aid of animation the evocative nature of music is explored, from the expression of mood to complex storytelling. Surprisingly none of Disney’s trademark characters appear (other than Mickey Mouse in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice segment). Instead the segments feature nature scenes and animals and fairy tale creatures engaged in frivolity. Most of the animation is quite impressive, but some of it is a little crude and generic. Still, Fantasia is an extraordinarily well-craft and artistic film that celebrates the power of music to express thoughts and feelings.
Fantasia’s voice is described as raspy, gritty, and soulful Using her unique style, blending gospel-style vocal instrumentation and sultry R&B, Fantasia collaborated with American Idol alum Tamyra Gray to release I Believe ” as her first single, which went on to win signficiant achievements, foremostly, the award for the first artist to achieve the number one song on Billboard Hot 100 for their first song release.

The film, with a production cost of more than $2 million (about four times more than an average live-action picture), initially failed at the box-office (partially due to the expensive installation of “Fantasound” sound reproduction equipment in theatres), but then its popularity increased and its cult status was assured when the members of the 60’s drug culture adopted it as a favorite hallucinatory experience when it was re-released (alongside other counter-cultural, head-tripping favorites, including 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) , Easy Rider (1969) , and the re-released Alice in Wonderland (1951) in 1974). Because of the studio’s financial difficulties, its next animated feature, Dumbo (1941), was a low-budget offering.
It is through Rimsky-Korsakov’s version that Night on Bald Mountain achieved lasting fame. Premiering in Saint Petersburg in 1886, the work became a concert favourite. Half a century later, the work obtained perhaps its greatest exposure through the Walt Disney animated film Fantasia (1940), featuring an arrangement by Leopold Stokowski , based on Rimsky-Korsakov’s version. Mussorgsky’s tone poem was not published in its original form until 1968. Although still rarely performed, it has started to gain exposure and become familiar to modern audiences.
Chernabog is the massive nocturnal devil in Night on Bald Mountain , who can take peoples hearts and holds power over various restless souls. His name is taken from Chernobog , a deity of Slavic mythology ; the name is Slavic for “black god”. 2 While officially a pagan god, Chernabog might have originally been intended as a representation of Satan : when “Night on Bald Mountain” appeared on the original Wonderful World of Disney , Walt Disney referred to Chernabog as “Satan himself.” 3 Deems Taylor also refers to Chernabog as “Satan” in the film.
This is the only piece of music that featured in both the 1940 and 2000 versions of Fantasia. In the 2000 version, the scene is introduced by magicians Penn & Teller and tells the story of Mickey Mouse as a sorcerer’s apprentice. He battles an army of broomsticks that come to life as he tries to regain control of his magical abilities.
By now the 1940 soundtrack, even with a sprucing up, is a quaint aural relic, thin and murky at the same time, a sound that evokes cathedral radios smelling of furniture polish as the tubes heat up. Yes, the music was written by the Great Composers, but who worships at their feet anymore? Bach, Beethoven and company seem more like soundtrack composers this time around, like Dmitri Tiomkin. The glory of the movie is what drove Disney in the first place: the lost or at least endangered art, craft, and spirit of animation.

The thing that I find the most amusing is that I have never heard little people complaining about their portrayals in these films, nor of people getting on a soapbox for them. I think that little people would have a much greater case about the slavery in Snow White than people of color would have about the slavery in Fantasia. They go and slave in a mine all day, then they come home to find a woman has, in essence home invaded them, and is now forcing them to live by her rules of cleanliness and nutrition. Saying that since they are of diminutive stature that they are no smarter than children and have to be taken care of. Personally, their house didn’t look that much dirtier than college frat house. I won’t even go into The Wizard of Oz and it’s portrayal of little people as singing, dancing cute little Munchkins. Or it’s use of evil flying monkey’s (which back them black people were still called).
