fantasy island cast 2020 – Home
Fantasy Island, Blumhouse’s upcoming horror reinvention of the classic TV series, is rated PG-13, and that’s likely to undercut its quality. An attempted revival of the series in 1998 leaned even harder into the supernatural aspects. It starred Malcolm McDowell as Mr. Roarke, aided by a female shapeshifter named Ariel (Mädchen Amick) and his adoptive daughter Miranda—obvious allusions to Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Fantasy Island was presented as a kind of limbo and a source for Mr. Roarke’s supernatural powers, while the many assistants worked there to pay off some unnamed debt. That reboot bombed and was mercifully canceled midseason.
The film is described as being a tonal mix of Westworld meets The Cabin in the Woods, centering on a group of contest winners who arrive at an island hotel to live out their dreams, only to find themselves trapped in nightmare scenarios.
The big-screen adaptation of the classic TV series Fantasy Island has landed a release date. The movie, based on the ABC series that ran from 1977-1984, will land in theaters February 28, 2020. Michael Pena (Ant-Man & The Wasp) will star as Mr. Roarke, who was played by Ricardo Montalban on the small screen. Other cast members include Lucy Hale (Truth or Dare), Jimmy Yang (Silicon Valley), and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).
We’ve seen a couple trailers for FANTASY ISLAND as its release date draws near, one of them is embedded above, and now we’ve gotten our hands on a batch of TV spots that show us more of what this movie has to offer. It doesn’t look like the show that starred Ricardo Montalban back in the day, but it does look like it could be entertaining.
Fantasy Island is an American fantasy drama television series created by Gene Levitt It aired on the ABC television network from 1977 to 1984. The series starred Ricardo Montalbán as the mysterious Mr. Roarke and Hervé Villechaize as his assistant Tattoo. Guests were granted so-called “fantasies” on the island for a price.
Michael Peña is Mr. Roarke, leading a cast that includes Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy Yang, Ryan Hansen, and Michael Rooker. The film comes from director Jeff Wadlow, with a script from Wadlow & Chris Roach & Jillian Jacobs. While it might take some people some time to get used to a Fantasy Island horror movie,” I’m into this idea. Rather than just make a straightforward TV-to-film adaptation, the folks behind Fantasy Island are trying something new, and different. The original Fantasy Island began as a two different made-for-TV movies in 1977 and 1978. It was spun-off into a TV series in ’78, and ran until 1984.
Directed by Jeff Wadlow , Fantasy Island tells the story of a secret enclave in the Pacific ocean run by the mysterious Mr. Roarke ( Michael Peña ). When Melanie ( Lucy Hale ) arrives at the island, she thinks she’ll be acting out her personal dream, which is to get revenge on a childhood bully. She’s not quite sure how this will be accomplished — Holograms,” is her best guess — and then is horrified to find that the hologram she was torturing is a real person. Soon Melanie and the other guests are fighting for their own survival, trying to solve the island’s mysteries before it’s too late. Check out the first trailer below.
From Sacha Gervasi, the film is based on the life of Fantasy Island co-star Hervé Villechaize. The movie stars Peter Dinklage as Villechaize and Jamie Dornan as struggling journalist Danny Tate. The rest of the cast includes Mireille Enos, Oona Chaplin, Harriet Walter, and David Straithorn.
Time Travel : Often, guests would think it was a simulation, but learn they had traveled back in time for real. Sometimes they even found themselves taking over the role of a famous historical figure (which could be a real bad thing if that figure was, oh, say, Marie Antoinette or – for totally different reasons – Lady Godiva).

Jinn-Angel heritage. He wished to help humans out by allowing them to live out their fantasies, and in the process become a better person. The Island itself is cloaked due to it existing slightly out of phase with most realities unless Roarke temporarily phases it in for guests to find. The Island hosts guest from all manner of parallel Universes, and even times in the past, and future. It’s even been known to travel to other planets thereby having extraterrestrials as guests. It in essence travels everywhere along with having portholes to just about anywhere imaginable as well. His tiny sidekick, Tattoo, is a wrongly banished Leprechaun he met in Ireland as he was making his way to the South Pacific from Scotland. Together they work to better humanity, and hope their own wish of being re-united with their families in peace, and harmony happens someday.
Michael Peña headlines the film as its version of Mr. Roarke, originally portrayed in iconic, white-suited form by Ricardo Montalbán. Peña has, deservedly, seen his star rise significantly in recent years with scene-stealing performances as Luis in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp , and a TV run on Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico , with film appearances in The Mule , Extinction, A Wrinkle in Time and Collateral Beauty also banked. He’ll next be seen in the August-scheduled live-action Dora the Explorer movie, playing Dora’s father.

In Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island, the enigmatic Mr. Roarke makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives.

A Grumman Widgeon aircraft was used for the series. 1 Just prior to the guests debarking from the plane, Mr. Roarke would address his assembling employees with the phrase “Smiles, everyone! Smiles!” As each visitor disembarked from the plane, Roarke would describe to Tattoo (or another assistant) the nature of their fantasy, usually with a cryptic comment, suggesting the person’s fantasy will not turn out as they expected. Roarke would then welcome his guests by lifting his glass and saying: “My dear guests, I am Mr. Roarke, your host. Welcome to Fantasy Island.” This toast was usually followed with a warm smile, but sometimes — depending on the nature of a guest or their fantasy — his eyes would show concern or worry for a guest’s safety.

Mr. Exposition : Mr Roarke, explaining the guests’ backstories to Tattoo. Film stars Michael Peña as Mr. Roarke. The mysterious Mr. Roarke returns to turn pipe dreams into nightmares in the new trailer for the film reboot of the Seventies TV show Fantasy Island.
Peña is taking on a role that was originated by Ricardo Montalban when the TV series, from Aaron Spelling, launched in 1978 on ABC. Mr. Roarke, joined by his sidekick, Tattoo (Hervé Villechaize), was the mysterious overseer of the island who granted the fantasies of visitors for a price. Created by Gene Levitt, the series dealt with dark themes and the supernatural as visitors come to the island to live out their fantasy wishes.
In the 1980 episode “With Affection, Jack the Ripper; Gigolo”, a female guest intent on researching Jack the Ripper ‘s crimes was sent back in time to that of 1888 London and would have become one of the Ripper’s victims had not Mr. Roarke physically intervened.
Each episode would alternate between two or three independent storylines as the guests experienced their fantasies and interacted with Roarke. When reruns of the series went into syndication, a half-hour version was offered, in which each hour-long original show was split to two separate half-hour shows in which only one guest’s story was told in each half-hour episode. This made it obvious that the original episodes had been planned in such a way that each guest or family got off the plane separately, did not interact with the other guest or family, and was given almost exactly half the time of the original episode.
As Himself : Tattoo arranges for Don Ho to sing at Mr Roarke’s wedding, and a sixth season episode finds Mickey Gilley playing himself pre fame looking for stardom and getting his real life club Gilley’s. With only a few exceptions, Roarke always made it quite clear that he was powerless to stop a fantasy once it had begun and that the guests must play them out to their conclusion.

Fantasy Island also stars Maggie Q, Austin Stowell, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy Yang, Ryan Hansen and Michael Rooker. Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2, Truth or Dare) directed the film and co-wrote the script with Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs.
In one episode when Tattoo was given his own fantasy as a birthday gift, which ended up with him being chased by hostile natives in canoes, Mr. Roarke suddenly appeared in a motorboat , snared Tattoo’s canoe with a grappling hook and towed it away at high speed to help him escape.
Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy Yang, Ryan Hansen and Michael Rooker all star in the film that’s directed by Jeff Wadlow, best known for Truth or Dare,” which also starred Hale. Wadlow also wrote the story along with Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs based on Levitt’s TV show.
Blumhouse’s primary mission statement has been to produce horror films on small – by studio standards – budgets of less than $10 million, and then (hopefully) make many times their investment back in theaters. This has held true for dozens of their releases, but not even Blumhouse finds success 100 percent of the time, and has seen their fair share of flops, either commercially or in the opinion of horror fans. It’s too early to predict if February’s Fantasy Island will be a hit or a miss, but the trailers and marketing haven’t exactly looked terrific.
The series was filmed primarily in Burbank, California , with the opening scenes of the enchanting island coastline being that of Kauai , Hawaii (both the Na Pali coast as well as Wailua Falls ). The house with the bell tower, where Tattoo rings the bell, is the Queen Anne Cottage , located in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia The plane, “arriving” with the guests, was filmed in the lagoon behind the Queen Anne Cottage. Sometimes, outdoor scenes were filmed at the Arboretum.
The first iteration of Fantasy Island debuted in 1977, with Ricardo Montalbán starring as a mysterious man named Mr. Roarke,” who would enact the fantasies of the guests upon his island — for a price. Each episode of the show would focus on a different wish, with their results usually meant to teach a life lesson.
Two Lines, No Waiting : The hour-long episodes followed the exploits of two separate Guests. Most of the time, the A Story and the B Story had nothing to do with one another; in fact, the two plot threads were usually written by two different scriptwriters (as was also the case with The Love Boat , except there it was three).
Shakespeare in Fiction : In the episode “Room and Bard” William Shakespeare (Robert Reed) is brought to the 70s to write a play for a horror film star wanting to become a serious actress. Michael Peña and Lucy Hale star in Sony Picture Entertainment’s Fantasy Island.
Those most certainly do not look like “good” fantasies, particularly the one in which Lucy Hale is meant to torture her high school bully, played by Portia Doubleday. The cast also includes Maggie Q (playing a woman whose dead child is brought back to life), Jimmy Yang (who is very funny on Silicon Valley, but will probably not be as funny here), Austin Stowell, Ryan Hansen (of Party Down and Veronica Mars fame), Michael Rooker (of James Gunn fame), and Michael Peńa – playing this movie’s version of Mr. Roarke. He’s not like a regular Mr. Roarke; he’s a Cool Mr. Roarke. Fantasy Island was directed by Jeff Wadlow, whose underwhelming credits include Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare (which also starred Lucy Hale) and Kick-Ass 2. Between Wadlow and the movie’s tagline – “Screams come true” – you can probably guess what kind of time you’re in for here (silly, is what).
