It’s an entertaining but insane set-piece for those who didn’t think Johnson had gone quite far enough with Skyscraper,” apparently, and it’s just a taste of things to come, as these two characters multitask between bickering and blowing things up.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – A Robotic Franchise Spinoff
Frenemies forever! Luke Hobbs (Johnson), an American federal agent, and Deckard Shaw (Statham), a British mercenary, are brought together to find the villain who stole the Vitamix of viruses, an infection that quickly liquefies a person’s internal organs. Complicating matters, the person who actually holds the virus is Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), Deckard’s sister, who’s also an agent. Hobbs and Shaw need to save her, destroy the substance and bring down a bloke named Brixton ( Idris Elba ).
Frei, Vincent (June 28, 2019). “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw—Art of VFX Final Trailer” Retrieved August 2, 2019. Idris Elba is joining the cast as Brixton, but you probably won’t like him. He’s the international terrorist in conflict with Hobbs and Shaw.
It’s been building for some time. While The Fast and the Furious” was a relatively humble car-heist caper, things changed around the time of Fast Five.” Our gang of car thieves and family-obsessed fixers started getting pulled into save-the-world scenarios by vaguely defined government agencies. The technology started inching closer and closer to absurdity; the stunts continued to strain credibility.
Get ready, because with the Fast & Furious franchise, there is one sure thing — you will be served up nonstop action. This film will not allow you to breathe as the action starts from the minute the lights go down and doesn’t let up until after the credits finally roll. And yes, there is a scene post credits that shows karma coming to all.
My kid and I are enormous marks for Dwayne Johnson. He can do no wrong (Skyscraper!?!), and he does not disappoint. Hobbs & Shaw was clearly designed to make money for everyone involved and lots of it. So, dear readers…hand it over.
Universal ‘s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw landed on tracking this morning and the expectation is that the film will make between $55M-$65M. The Dwayne Johnson-Jason Statham pic opens on Aug. 2 largely around the world in 64 markets with China coming later on Aug. 23.
After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW. Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s FURIOUS 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever – and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister – these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.
We open with MI6 Agent Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) on a mission to retrieve a deadly virus that has the potential of killing most of humanity. On the same mission is the super-soldier cyborg Brixton (Idris Elba) sent by the dark ops organization known as Eteon, who created the virus in the first place. Brixton is a cyborg soldier with super-strength, impervious to bullets, and a computer in his eye that targets any red shirt” in his path.
Like other recent FAST & FURIOUS movies, HOBBS & SHAW is filled with constant action. This time around, however, it adds lots of humor between Dwayne Johnson, who plays Hobbs, and Jason Statham, who plays Shaw. The movie’s conceit is that Hobbs and Shaw can’t stand one another, so the script contains constant insults and trash talk between the two characters, some of which is disgusting. HOBBS & SHAW isn’t quite as emotionally powerful as some of the other FAST & FURIOUS movies, but it has its share of touching moments.
The three locate Professor Andreiko, Snowflake’s creator, who informs them that to prevent Snowflake from eradicating humanity, Hattie must, while the virus is still dormant, either be killed or have the virus removed with a specialized extraction device, located in Eteon’s headquarters in Chernobyl , Ukraine (site of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster ). After flying undercover to Moscow and rendezvousing with Deckard’s girlfriend Margarita to rearm, the three infiltrate the facility. They manage to retrieve the extraction device before escaping and destroying the facility; however, Andreiko is killed and the device is damaged during their escape.
Let’s be clear right up front: this movie, in which Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles from the Fast & Furious” franchise, is ridiculous. Last year, Johnson told Rolling Stone he’s unsure about whether he’ll appear in Furious 9 or Furious 10. The ninth installment has begun filming without him, but there’s still hope for the tenth entry in the franchise.
But if you can’t spare 16-odd hours to binge the original franchise, just know that the series centers on a group of car-enthusiasts-turned-heroes-for-hire led by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). Hobbs shows up in Fast Five, as the cop sent to hunt down a fugitive Dominic in Brazil, only to develop a begrudging respect for the drag racer with a heart of gold.
NASA X-43 A is an unmanned Hypersonic aircraft used to launch from a larger aircraft. In 2005, Guinness book of world records recognized NASA X-43 A as fastest aircraft ever made. It sets a top speed of 7000 miles per hour. That is about 8.4 times faster than the speed of sound.
Summer actioner that pretty much hits what it’s aiming for without a great deal of fuss. Say to yourself that it’s only a movie and the filmmakers themselves will probably shrug and agree with you. Which is to say that there’s no surprises here. In typical buddy cop movie fashion the stars HATE each other at the opening. How will they feel by the ending? Like you didn’t know.
This high-spirited summer action extravaganza delivers precisely what it promises: two great personalities, great stunts, and a little something extra. Hobbs & Shaw – or, fully titled, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – narrows its focus to the most charismatic, and funniest, of the series’ characters. Thus, it gets rid of the baggage of the worst entries in the franchise, including aggressive braggadocio, dimwitted writing, and a huge cast of half-baked characters that were stretched too thin. Now it’s just Johnson and Statham, and they’re perfectly matched, with both taking an appealingly tongue-in-cheek approach to their on-screen heroics.
Johnson has not being shy about his plans for what this all means. Both he and Statham are apparently passing on the still untitled Fast 9” film, suggesting they plan to break away from the parent franchise completely. Meanwhile, Johnson is all over social media calling Hobbs and Shaw” a taste of the team ”he’s putting together” for future sequels. Turns out sometimes the best families need to go their separate ways. Here’s to them stepping on the gas.
Is this spin-off going to spawn its own franchise? Director David Leitch would certainly like to start another one with Hobbs and Shaw at the center of the action. He told Collider that it’s for that reason that he’d like this installment to feel “grounded” and wants to “give it a real sense of credibility” to set the stage for future movies.
Hobbs & Shaw features over 80 minutes of never-before-seen bonus content including an alternate opening, deleted and extended scenes and several featurettes with the filmmakers and cast that take fans further into the thrilling story. Directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool, Atomic Blonde) from a story by longtime Fast & Furious narrative architect Chris Morgan and a screenplay by Morgan and Drew Pearce (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Iron Man 3), Hobbs & Shaw is produced by Johnson, Statham, Morgan and Hiram Garcia (Skyscraper, Rampage).
A simple glance at the title of new film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” makes it clear that August’s first big blockbuster is being pulled in multiple directions. The film couldn’t just be Hobbs & Shaw” — ignoring the franchise that spawned it — but nor is it allowed to be Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw,” a more traditional sequel construction. The strange compromise, in which Fast & Furious” presents Hobbs & Shaw” is symbolic of the Frankenstein nature of this action film. And yet, the Jason Statham-Dwayne Johnson film is still the most entertaining the franchise has been in years.
Actors who are known to be friends of Johnson” have surprise cameos, including Ryan Reynolds (who steals every scene he’s in) and Kevin Hart (who does not). The movie’s final hour even takes the action to the island of Samoa, so that Johnson can both openly embrace his heritage as part of the final battle’s denouement, and give on-screen speaking roles to nearly a dozen men of color, none of whom have to play stereotypical gangsters on the streets of L.A. How far the franchise has come.
The flick’s flimsiness is not the Rock’s fault. If you had told me in 2002 that the former wrestler would end up being one of the only bankable movie stars left in Hollywood, I would have said, Go home, you’re drunk.” But it’s true, and he’s rightly earned that status. The Rock is funny and charismatic in Hobbs & Shaw,” and his bro chemistry with co-star Jason Statham is a joy. The pair slinging vicious insults at each other is almost vaudevillian — it would make a decent live tour.
Hobbs & Shaw follows Fast & Furious rivals lawman Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and mercenary Deckard Shaw (Statham) who must form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of our world. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham joke, flex, and beat up bad guys in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
In the first post-credits scene, both Hobbs and Shaw bring together their respective, estranged families. Hobbs introduces his daughter (Eliana Sua) to her formidable grandmother (Lori Pelenise Tuisano) and her many uncles in his homeland of Samoa. Meanwhile, Deckard Shaw fulfills his imprisoned mother’s wish by bringing his sister Hattie to visit her. The mom, played by Helen Mirren, takes the opportunity to plot her escape from confinement.
Dom challenges Letty in a street racing competition; afterward, he returns her cross necklace he had kept. After Letty leaves, Shaw offers Dom a chance to walk away, threatening to otherwise hurt his family, but Dom refuses. Tej tracks Shaw’s next attack to a Spanish NATO base. Shaw’s crew assaults a highway military convoy carrying a computer chip to complete his device. Dom’s crew interferes, while Shaw, accompanied by Letty, commandeers a tank, destroying cars en route. Brian and Roman manage to flip the tank before it causes further damage, resulting in Letty being thrown from the vehicle, though Dom saves her. Shaw and his crew are captured, but reveal Mia has been kidnapped by Shaw’s henchmen Vegh and Klaus. Hobbs is forced to release Shaw, and Riley, revealed to be Shaw’s covert accomplice, leaves with him; Letty chooses to remain with Dom.
Genocide, schmenocide? Most of the humor outside of Johnson and Statham trading barbs is similarly lazy, like its star cameos: Helen Mirren doing a lousy cockney accent as Shaw’s incarcerated mum; and Ryan Reynolds with his usual Paul Rudd-on-crack line delivery. The best appearance is Kevin Hart as an air marshal who wants to see some real action.
There are a couple of entertaining cameos that are best appreciated when the surprise is not spoiled, including one very funny scene involving an air marshal. Ideally, Hobbs & Shaw” works best if don’t just come in blind, but if you lower all your expectations. Silence your cellphone — along with your brain — fasten your seat belt and sit back for a (bumpy) ride.
