The first trailer and poster for Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming movie Free Guy were released yesterday, giving us the first look at Reynolds as Guy, a non-player character in the open-world video game Free City, which was based on a combination of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite The movie also stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi. Shawn Levy directed Free Guy and re-tweeted the video with a note that he loves his Free Guy stars. It’s definitely nothing new for Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds to post a timely self-deprecating video. It’s also not even new for him to do so connected to Free Guy. Remember the cast video with Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi? Reynolds and Waititi pretended Free Guy was the first time they worked together, going out of their way to disavow their previous team-up for Green Lantern.
In Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds plays Guy, a non-player character in an open world video game. According to Syfy Wire , Jodie Comer and Joe Keery play programmers who create a code that allows Guy to break free of his non-playable bonds. Taika Waititi plays Antoine, described as an unscrupulous game publisher who steals their code and sticks it in Free City.
When he and his fellow cast members were asked what attracted them to the project, Lil Rel Howery said it was the people. Comer agreed. Stranger Things actor Joe Keery said it was the script. Reynolds’ answer was slightly different, to say the least.
While Guy might not be quite as prepared to become a superhero as Wade Wilson, based on the trailer for Free Guy, it seems like Reynolds’ character will have just as much humor, wit and slightly-nauseating action sequences to tide audiences over as they wait for Deadpool 3 to be released.
Also, the Minecraft movie had been set for May 24, 2019, but Warner Bros. Pictures is moving that back. Just last month, the studio announced that Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) will write and direct the adaptation of the popular video game. The story reportedly follows a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.
Here’s the trailer for an interesting-looking comedic action movie set for cinemas next year, Free Guy. This one comes to the screen from Night at the Museum helmer Shawn Levy from a story by Matt Lieberman and a screenplay by Lieberman and Zak Penn. Ryan Reynolds leads the impressive cast, which also includes Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi.
Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) plays Guy, an NPC bank teller that is tired of the same, every-day bank robberies, hostage situations, and gun battles that make up life in his city. When he kills a player and takes his glasses, he learns that his world is really an open-world video game, and takes it upon himself to try and save the world from the gamers.
But Boston audiences may be particularly keen to check out Reynolds’ tongue-in-cheek take on the set-up. Free Guy” filmed around Boston’s Financial District earlier this year , and the first trailer reimagines Liberty Square and Kilby Street as the in-game locale of Free City. (The Globe’s own Exchange Place headquarters are decimated by a crashing helicopter within the trailer’s first 20 seconds.) Other scenes were shot in downtown Worcester and inside the former Framingham Bank buildng.
Free Guy also stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, Channing Tatum, and Lil Rey Howery. Stranger Things director Shawn Levy is assuming directorial duties, having previously directed Cheaper by the Dozen, Night at the Museum, and Date Night. Zak Penn and Matt Lieberman penned the script, with Penn’s prior writing credits including The Avengers and Lieberman having co-wrote 2019’s The Addams Family and Playing With Fire.
Keery isn’t alone in his love for the movie; back in October, Reynolds told the crowd at New York Comic Con that “I haven’t been this fully immersed, engaged and pumped about something since Deadpool.” Still, director Shawn Levy explained at the time that Guy has a lot more in common with the infamous “merc with a mouth” than simply the actor who portrays them. “On a very literal level, Free Guy is about Guy, who’s a bank teller. He works in a bank, and his bank gets robbed 17 times in a day, and eventually he realizes that’s weird and not normal,” the director explained.
We all know that feeling of waking up and feeling like we are trapped in the same routine. Doing the same old thing day after day can make it seem as if we have no control over our own lives. It’s almost as if we are nothing more than background characters in someone else’s story. It’s a depressing thought. At least it’s not literally true though. And at least we aren’t constantly avoiding helicopter crashes and being attacked with flamethrowers. That’s what Ryan Reynolds character has to face in the upcoming action-comedy Free Guy He realizes he’s nothing more than an NPC in an open-world game. It’s a place where anything—and we do mean anything—goes. And that includes him taking control over his own existence to try and save his entire world.
Starring Ryan Reynolds of “Deadpool” and directed by Shawn Levy of “Stranger Things” and “Night at the Museum,” the film “Free Guy” takes place inside a video game that looks a lot like some of the world’s most popular titles.
Guy picks up the ground rules governing the game pretty quickly, starting with a “first aid” token that heals his broken nose. “Is this what recreational drugs feels like?” he asks a random motorist. He also finds an ally in Milly, aka Molotov Girl (Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer), who is able to move in and out of the game at will. Meanwhile, game developer Antoine (Taika Waititi) has plans to shut the game down, against the objections of a programmer, Keys (Keery). Keys and Milly created the code that resulted in Guy—who is supposed to be a non playable background character—becoming aware of his virtual environment.
Reynolds, who plays the titular Guy and produces alongside Levy under his Maximum Effort banner, calls the film a modern-day Back to the Future for this generation” and shares Levy’s excitement. In fact, he puts this at the top of his list when it comes to his history of films.
So has Disney basically given fans GTA: The Movie? It certainly seems so. Obviously though, the twist here is that the main character is one of thousands of cannon-fodder who populate Free City, constantly at the mercy of the online invaders who do nothing but wreak havoc and violence, but that won’t stop us all from being excited by this premise.
The trailer kicks off with a joke at Disney’s expense, promising that the film comes from the studio that brought you ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Aladdin,’ ‘The Lion King,’ twice.” From there, we see Reynold’s unnamed Guy waking up from a good night’s sleep and start getting ready to head to his job as a bank teller. As we leave his apartment we see his city is plagued with constant, cartoonish violence which Guy and his fellow happy citizens treat as totally normal.
In the second clip, we see Reynold’s and Keery’s characters as they figure out that Waititi’s character has stolen Reynold’s source code. Ryan Reynolds might just have another decent video game movie. Produced by Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Adam Kolbrenner with Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, George Dewey, Dan Levine and Michael Riley McGrath serving as executive producers.
FREE GUY tells the story of a lonely bank teller who discovers he is actually a background character in the open-world video game Free City. Reynolds stars as Guy, a bank teller and NPC (non-playable character) who discovers he’s living in a video game.
Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Adam Kolbrenner produced the movie with Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, George Dewey, Dan Levine, and Michael Riley McGrath serving as executive producers. Judging by the trailer, Reynolds’ character seems to be unaware he’s in a video game and Comer has to show him the truth (again, just The Lego Movie).
Maybe we really are background characters in a terrible open world game. (Free City looks way less awful than the world of 2019). But at least our creators are giving us an original movie to see. The studio also unveiled the first poster for the film, which features Reynolds as Guy doing his utmost to look heroic.
Free Guy” is also locally tied in terms of its cast. Keery was raised in Newburyport before being cast in Stranger Things,” which Levy executive-produces for Netflix. Kostek, meanwhile, grew up in Connecticut before becoming a New England Patriots cheerleader; she’s also the long-time girlfriend of retired Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski.
If you’re scratching your head, thinking, What’s going on here??,” you’re not alone. Even Comer asked him, Why would people want merchandise for Free Guy?” Side-note: we didn’t love it when Reynolds told her to zip it,” but we trust Comer has a handle on that.
Ryan Reynolds is usually making headlines for his hit role as Deadpool or for a hilarious trolling session with Hugh Jackman on social media. However, we may be seeing Reynolds making headlines for something completely different in the next few months. It’s been said that 20th Century Fox’s upcoming project, Ryan Reynolds Free Guy movie, is going to top the level of awesomeness Deadpool brought to our screens.
Movies inspired by videogames are often shit, but I do at least like the premise of this one. It’s a shame it seemingly devolves into another action movie where Ryan Reynolds plays Ryan Reynolds, but on the other hand I quite like Ryan Reynolds. What a conundrum! Taika Waititi is in it, too, ensuring that I’ll give it a watch.
