Paul Rudd (“Avengers: Endgame“) will co-star in “Afterlife” as a summer school teacher named Mr. Grooberson who was a kid when the Manhattan Crossrip occurred, making a major mark on his life.

Up in the Air and Thank You For Smoking director Jason Reitman’s new Ghostbusters flick starring Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd hits in July 2020. Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits theaters July 10th, 2020. Ivan Reitman serves as a producer on Afterlife,” with a screenplay cowritten by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan (director on the 2015 Poltergeist” remake and the TV series Scream”). The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife” starts off slowly in a sleepy Oklahoma farm town with a struggling family down on their luck … but things heat up pretty darn fast.
The assumption that the new sequel would tread familiar ground also seemed possible when Reitman promised a movie that followed the trajectory of the original film” and discussed how much the 1984 classic — which his father directed — meant to him. The signs all pointed toward something recognizable and nostalgic, but now that the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has arrived, it’s evident that the director has taken a new approach.
We finally have the first Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer. And while it doesn’t exactly feature fire and brimstone coming down from the skies or the rivers and seas boiling, it does have plenty of ghosts waiting to be busted.
Ghostbusters 3 (that’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife) will be released on July 10 2020. Ghostbusters: Afterlife Jason Reitman says he made the sequel to honor his father, Ivan, who directed the original movies. In a trailer for the upcoming franchise film Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the ageless, 50-year-old Ant-Man” star finds himself unlocking a spooky mystery in a small midwestern town.
First off, after weeks of teasing, we can safely start calling the movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Not Ghostbusters 2020. Or Ghostbusters. Or even the long-touted Ghostbusters 3. Just Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which says a lot about the story at hand, one that’ll bite your head off.
In the first trailer for director Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the spooky action has shifted from Manhattan to rural Summerville, where single mom Callie (Carrie Coon) moves into an old farmhouse owned by her late father.
Bill Murray will officially reprise his iconic role as Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (out July 10). The actor previously played the sardonic supernatural investigator in the first film in the franchise, 1984’s Ghostbusters, and its 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II. While Murray made a cameo appearance in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, it was as a different character, a debunker of the alleged supernatural named Martin Heiss.
In June 2019, it was reported by Variety that Ant-Man star Paul Rudd would also feature as a teacher , Mr. Grooberson, presumably in charge of Grace and Wolfhard’s characters. It’s revealed that Mr. Grooberson was a kid in New York during the 1984 Manhattan Crossrip” (the film’s name for the giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man rampage in the original film).
This may come as a shock to some people considering the original film took place over 30 years ago in the ’80s in what’s dubbed the Manhattan Crossrip” of 1984, but it has been confirmed by the director of the film himself, Jason Reitman, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly , that Ghostbusters: Afterlife is not a reboot,” but is a direct continuation of the timeline and the events that occurred in the original Ghostbusters movies. Does this mean that we’ll see the return of some of our fan-favorite ghosts like Slimer, or Gozer the Gozerian? Only time will tell who will be making a return but one thing we do know for sure is that in this universe, the events of the original Ghostbusters film definitely happened and they will for sure have an impact on the events that take place in this next modern chapter of the series.
Most notably, a familiar beige jumpsuit with the name “Spengler” written on it. For those unfamiliar, Dr. Egon Spengler was a founding member of the original Ghostbusters team, played by the late Harold Ramis It was previously revealed that the new movie would follow the family of past team members, and it seems the film opted to follow Egon’s relatives on a new adventure. Although the kids don’t quite know what they have on their hands, their ghost-obsessed teacher, played by Rudd, seems all too happy to educate them.
Jason Reitman’s highly secretive next project is officially titled Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Ghostbusters returns to the big screen, with Ghostbusters: Afterlife Story continuing the story that began with the original 1984 film. It’s beginning to look like Bill Murray has signed on to take part in Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters 2020.
A third Ghostbusters film had been in various stages of development since Ghostbusters II in 1989. After Murray refused to commit to the project, and after the death of cast member Harold Ramis in 2014, Sony instead produced a reboot After the film underperformed at the box office, Reitman began developing a direct sequel to the original films. The new cast members were announced by July 2019, while the original cast signed on two months later.
The film’s first trailer will debut Monday, December 6, and may shed some more light on the plot. The film’s cast also includes Paul Rudd, Bokeem Woodbine, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts. It’s directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman who directed both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will open in theaters July 2020. The first official trailer for the upcoming 2020 Ghostbusters reboot dropped on Monday, as well as the title for the highly anticipated film. Bill Murray will suit up with the proton pack in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, even if shooting it was an uncomfortable experience.
Picking up the story 30 years on from the events of Ghostbusters 2, which saw New York under attack from supernatural forces, Afterlife sees the descendants of Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler moving into the former paranormal investigator’s remote farm house.
It’s common practice for major movie studios to use the month of December to release trailers for their biggest blockbusters coming out in the next year, and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE is a textbook example. Sony Pictures launched the first official look at the new film on December 2, 2019, and with it established not only the new group of central protagonists that the story will follow, but also the mystery at the center of the plot, and how everything will link back to the events featured in both GHOSTBUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS II.
Aliens in Cardiff : In contrast to the original movies (and the reboot), which were set in New York City , this movie is set in the midwestern-ish town of Summerville. The first teaser trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been released by Sony Pictures. Watch it above.
The torch of the franchise needs to be passed to a younger generation , and the fact that it includes female Ghostbusters is a step in the right direction. Unlike the 2016 reboot, which had very little heartfelt connection to the other films, the fact that its Egon’s grand daughter that leads the way should make the fanbase happy.
From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original “Ghostbusters” universe. In “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan.
Vanity Fair offered a first look at the latest film last week, featuring several stills—including one showing the original Ghostbusters tricked-out ambulance. Per the official synopsis, “A single mother and her two children move to Summerville, Oklahoma, after inheriting property from a previously unknown relative. They discover their family’s legacy to the original Ghostbusters, who have become something of a myth, as many have long since forgotten the events of the ‘Manhattan Crossrip of 1984′”—i.e., the events of the original film. Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) plays mom Callie, while Mckenna Grace (The Haunting of Hill House) plays her science-loving daughter Phoebe. Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) plays son Trevor.
As Phoebe and her brother Travis (Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard) explore the old and creepy mansion, they learn all about their grandfather and his legacy as a member of the Ghostbusters—partially thanks to their science teacher, played by Paul Rudd Together, they uncover a strange, supernatural occurrence underneath their small town and have to work together to stop it. I’m guessing it’s going to involve the busting of some ghosts—because of course—including Slimer, who makes a mischievous appearance during the trailer.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will return to the world of the original Ghostbusters films later this year. Regardless, director Paul Feig wouldn’t mind seeing characters from his 2016 Ghostbusters reboot crossover with the original universe.
This shot is a fun reference to the 1984 film. As you’ll recall, there is a scene where the team is investigating a haunting in the New York Public Library, and they come across a pile of books stacked on top of each other. Ray (Dan Aykroyd) then notes how the symmetrical book stacking” is like the Philadelphia Mass Turbulence of 1947.” Afterward, they discover the old lady ghost in a nearby aisle and run out of the building screaming like big babies.
The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife dropped today, and an old star returned – the Ecto-1, the iconic 1959 Cadillac ambulance turned ghost-mobile. The movie, set long after the events of the first two, follows Callie (Carrie Coon), a single mom, and her two kids Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Travis (Finn Wolfhard) as they move into their mysterious grandfather’s Oklahoma farmhouse that’s filled with odd Ghostbuster relics. Things quickly go awry as ghosts return to terrorize Summerville, leaving the kids to pick over those relics in hopes of saving the town.
In June, Ghostbusters 3 joined its already significant star power by bringing Ant-Man and Avengers: late-game actor Paul Rudd as a teacher to the sibling school. The team who you’re gonna call is not QUITE back in the first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife , but there are plenty of clues that point towards the return of an old friend.
As we learned on Friday , the sequel follows a single mother (Carrie Coon) and her kids, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), as they adjust to life living in a creepy farmhouse in Oklahoma. The house, it turns out, was left to them by a mysterious grandfather, and the surrounding property is filled with dusty relics of a bygone era of ghostbusting, which hasn’t been in vogue for decades. As Paul Rudd’s Mr. Grooberson clarifies, there hasn’t been a ghost sighting in 30 years. That’s about to change, however, as some slimer-colored green light is seen pouring from an abandoned mine in the area.
Paul Feig is holding out hope for a movie crossover between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and his 2016 reboot. Reitman, who wrote and directed The Front Runner, has co-written the Ghostbusters sequel with Gil Kenan. His father Ivan will produce the new film.
While Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spengler, died in 2014, most of the main cast from the original movies is slated to reprise their roles. So while Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts don’t appear in the trailer, expect to see the old guard make a cameo at the very least.
Nearly a year after audiences got a super short tease of the new Ghostbusters movie, we finally have a full trailer. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a continuation of the original series – unlike Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot – and is being directed by Jason Reitman, the son of series director Ivan Reitman. Finn Wolfhard and his sister arrive in a rural town after inheriting a mansion from a mysterious family member. After paranormal activity shakes the area, the kids discover their grandfather’s trove of ghost hunting equipment – a jumpsuit labelled “Spengler” is among the PKE meters and proton packs.
Egon Spengler was the character Harold Ramis portrayed in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. Ramis died in 2014. The 2016 remake paid homage to Ramis with a bust of his head. The tragic loss of Ramis would explain why he could not be in the picture, literally.
Also, as we’ve mentioned, all of those incredibly fan-service-y small details in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer can be seen as a firm declaration of intent on the part of Reitman and Kenan: they intend to honor the original story and refer early and often to its characters and events, but this is their film, and they’re going to tell their own story. Personally, we find that story — which appears to involve the family of the deceased Egon Spengler uncovering a terrible secret in the small town in which dear old grandpa owned an old farmhouse — to be a stroke of genius, and if we’re being honest, we also think it’s a no-brainer to lean on a young cast. As pointed out by Paul Rudd’s character in the spot, “there hasn’t been a ghost sighting in 30 years” — and the original Ghostbusters, of course, haven’t been active during that entire period.
Next year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be the third film in the original franchise’s story. It’s a followup to 1989’s Ghostbusters 2, and not the 2016 reboot. But based on the first trailer, we shouldn’t expect to see our favorite ‘busters running around New York City with their proton packs. This time, the story is headed to the middle of nowhere,” far from the bright lights of the Big Apple. But that’s a perfect place for a new generation of heroes to be when things start getting spooky. Their grandfather, one Egon Spengler, left them everything they need to take up the mantle at their creepy new house. And the Spengler grandchildren seem ready to answer the call.
Jason Reitman (“Up in the Air,” “Juno”) takes over filmmaking duties from his own father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 “Ghostbusters,” along with 1989’s “Ghostbusters II.” The elder Reitman returns for “Afterlife” as a producer, while Jason Reitman directs and penned the script with “Monster House” and “City of Ember” filmmaker Gil Kenan.
