Harry Styles’ Lights Up

BTSBTS’ has cited Nas, Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, Post Malone, and Charlie Puth as musical inspirations. BTS has also cited Queen as an influence, saying they “grew up watching videos of Live Aid.” During their concert at Wembley Stadium in London, Jin paid tribute to Queen by leading the crowd in a version of Freddie Mercury’s “ay-oh” chant from the band’s Live Aid concert.

On November 9, 2018 ” Love Yourself: Answer ” became the first Korean album to be certified Gold (500,000+ units), and BTS became the first Korean group to get a Platinum (1,000,000+ units) certification with the single ” MIC Drop ” in the United States.

But why was BTS the band that finally broke through the culture barrier overseas to make significant waves in the US? The answer lies in a combination of factors, and most of them are about change: the changing nature of K-pop’s studio culture and the way idols” are produced; changing depictions of masculinity in South Korea; changing ranges of acceptable expression in K-pop; and, above all, the approach BTS has taken to building its fan base and interacting with its fans.

In the earliest videos of the band, from the months before their 2013 debut, the members were styled as young and sweetly innocent , maintaining the common schoolboy” concept of male K-pop idol groups. When the group officially launched in June 2013, however, it was with a hard style paying homage to old-school gangster rap. Their first single, No More Dream,” was an ode to teen apathy, a rebellious rejection of Korean traditionalism.

The irony is that these figures represent only a part of their sales. While most recent acts issued no compilation, BTS dropped tons of reissues and best of albums, along with music videos.

In the following table, all categories display figures that way, e.g. in equivalent album sales. For example, singles from Wings released in digital format sold the equivalent of 1,271,000 albums – 8,470,000 downloads with a 10 to 1,5 weighting.

Following their philanthropic efforts in their Love Myself anti-violence campaign in partnership with UNICEF, BTS addressed the United Nations 73rd General Assembly and became the youngest ever recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea due to their contributions in spreading Korean culture and language.

Their dedicated fan base helps here too since a solid share of these sales were actually exports to plenty of places from around the world. Overall the band is up to 3.16 million units sold in this format, not something you’d expect from an artist debuting in 2013.

Bang’s initial idea for BTS was to build not a boy band, but rather a supporting crew around one talented teen: Kim Nam-joon, a.k.a. RM. He quickly opted to go the idol group route instead, and it took nearly three years of trying out different combinations of members and styles for the boy band to finally emerge.

All those packaging-only records do not create value, they exploit the value originating from the parent studio album of each of its tracks instead. Inevitably, when such compilations are issued, this downgrades catalog sales of the original LP. Thus, to perfectly gauge the worth of these releases, we need to re-assign sales proportionally to its contribution of all the compilations which feature its songs. The following table explains this method.

In February 2019, BTS attended the 61st Grammy Awards as award presenters. It was their first time attending the event following an appearance by the group at the LA Grammy Museum in 2018. In April, BTS became the first Asian act to surpass 5 billion streams on Spotify, and Time named BTS as one of Time 100’s most influential people of 2019.

The band is basically doubling its sales every year. Obviously, most sales from their early albums where achieved recently since a lot of newly gained fans collect their discography.

We, the undersigned petitioners, appeal to the Honourable Government and The President of South Korean Republic to give all the seven BTS members Kim Seokjinnim, Min Yoonginim, Jung Hoseoknim, Kim Namjoonnim, Park Jiminnim, Kim Taehyungnim, Jeon Jeongguknim, an opportunity to choose the right time for the military service and enlist to the same military camp together.

On November 6, 2018, BTS won eleven awards at the MBC Plus X Genie Music Awards, including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. On November 29, 2018, BTS won the grand prize (“daesang”) at the 3rd Asia Artist Awards. On December 1st, 2018, BTS won a total of seven awards at the 2018 Melon Music Awards, including Album of the Year with Love Yourself: Tear , and Artist of the Year. On December 14, 2018, BTS won ten awards at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. This marked their third year in a row winning the Artist of the Year award.

In case you don’t remember, the stars aligned for both BTS and Lizzo to perform at the 2019 Jingle Ball in Los Angeles on Dec. 6. And now, with both artists confirming their wishes to work together, it seems fans are dying to see a collaboration in the near future.

Thinking outside of the box is a sure-fire way of garnering vitriol from one’s culture, but it is also the crucial factor in the ongoing evolution of art – to take the risks other people refuse to take or else let yourself melt into obscurity with the rest of them. In the unfortunate case of Bangtan, they have become the ultimate poster children for misunderstood pioneers, with hostility grinding its gears from not one but three different sides – Korean hip-hop, Korean idol music and the West.

The L.A. trip was the sort of pop cultural milestone not seen since the Beatles arrived in New York (or One Direction arrived, well, anywhere), but of different magnitude. For countless Asian-Americans, it has meant everything to see seven Koreans celebrated on a global scale. Back home, Koreans are astonished to see a group of their own go so far (unusually, BTS exploded overseas first, only winning their first daesang, or major Korean music award, in 2016). The boys know it too—over the course of our day with them, they spend a great deal of their time blissfully awestruck by the attention.

Their Japanese studio album, Wake Up (2014), released that December, peaking at number three on the weekly Oricon Albums Chart and selling 25,000 copies. Along with re-recorded Japanese versions of older songs, it also contained the original tracks ” Wake Up ” and ” The Stars “. Their first concert tour, 2014 BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet , was held from October to December.

RM first made his name as an underground rapper; still in his teens, he was frequently spotted spitting verses alongside his friend Zico, who would go on to become the leader of the K-pop group Block B. After a friend told Bang about the rapping teen, Bang recruited him into his studio, where fans gave him the pre-debut nickname Rap Monster.” From there, the idea to form an entire idol group rapidly took shape, and the Monster shortened his stage name to RM.

Mieli także swój własny ośmioodcinkowy program Rookie King: Channel Bangtan (kor. 신인왕: 채널 방탄) emitowany na SBS MTV.

For anybody with in-depth knowledge of their process the authenticity of the members’ work is in no doubt. RM, a genius lyricist, even takes it upon himself to personally discuss the production process of each new album with the fans (fun fact: he reportedly has an I.Q. of 148). He streams Skype-style from his own personalized studio (the three rappers plus the vocalist Jungkook each have their own) as he sits at his desk and elaborates on the personal backstory of each song, describing the intricate, sometimes gruelling ways he molded it into its final form.

Back in August, the Juice” singer had the best reaction to Boy With Luv” during an interview with CBC Music, where she called the song beyond a jam.” Lizzo also revealed she would like to collaborate with the K-pop group.

Record-breaking South Korean boy band BTS (aka Bangtan Boys) balance an energetic blend of dance-pop and hip-hop with deeply introspective lyrics, which helped them build a devoted global following while also becoming the most successful K-pop act in U.S.

It is known that BTS members are respectful men and faithful Korean citizens. They will never agree to be exempted because they see military service as their honour and duty.

South Korean boy band BTS will take a break to “recharge and refresh as musicians and creators,” their manager announced on Monday. BTS performing at the Rose Bowl in front of 60,000 fans.

After the five-week break, which ended Sept. 16, the group plunged back into the K-pop grind. They are restarting the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself world tour, which kicked off in May at the Rose Bowl (two sold-out dates and $16.5 million in ticket sales, another record) and resumes Oct. 10 at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The appearance comes at the request of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and has generated controversy (especially after Nicki Minaj canceled a date there in July).

On November 9, 2018 ” Love Yourself: Answer ” became the first Korean album to be certified Gold (500,000+ units), and BTS became the first Korean group to get a Platinum (1,000,000+ units) certification with the single ” MIC Drop ” in the United States.

Factoring in every format, their pair of early albums 2 Cool 4 Skool and !RUL8,2? are over half a million a piece. If we put this number in perspective with South Korean releases, it is already enormous.
