Our Annual Hillsong Worship album is the combined effort of our Hillsong Church worship teams to express both our personal devotion and congregational offering of worship. With a 30+ year history and legacy of live worship albums, Awake” is Hillsong Worship’s first studio album in almost two decades. Hillsong Worship has always represented the ‘sound’ of Hillsong Church. The opportunity to capture and express that through studio recordings was a catalyst for a sonic experience that is utterly true to the spirit and legacy of Hillsong Church whilst being significantly unique in the current worship music landscape. The songs of Awake” rouse the listener. Community, humanity and divinity tangibly inform the sounds across the record as worship leader’s voices are set against everything from harps to horn ensembles; synths to human percussion; spontaneous worship, small vocal ensembles and big choir to soaring guitars and the rustling, rumbling texture of intercession.
Not long after, Houston and the rest of United’s influence began to outpace the parent band. The song Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” from 2013’s Zion went double platinum and sat at the top of the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart for a record 61 weeks.
Since the early ’90s, various groups like Hillsong Worship, Hillsong United , and Hillsong Young & Free have operated under the Hillsong brand, finding widespread global success with an abundance of recordings, many of which have sprung out of the church’s annual events like the Hillsong Conference and Encounterfest. Once Hillsong recordings began topping the Australian pop charts in the mid-2000s, the church continued to expand with different locations and satellite groups around the world. By the 2010s, Hillsong had become a major presence in the U.S. with albums like Zion (2013) and Let There Be Light (2016) topping the Billboard Christian charts and performed and earning high placements on the pop charts as well.
As they navigate the second half of their second decade as a worship team, Hillsong Worship taps into one of their foundational tenents: their commitment to equipping and building the local church – across the globe.
At the time, the church was best known for their primary band, Hillsong Worship. Led by Darlene Zschech, their music became a global church fixture with mega-hits like Shout to the Lord,” a song that was sung in more than 30 million churches.
Well, no, because some of the Hillsong Worship members also work with Hillsong United, which is primarily a studio band. But, even on our live albums, there’s still a lot of production work on the records that we do in the studio.
Morgan serves as Hillsong’s worship pastor, replacing Darlene Zschech in 2008. It’s hard to overstate the influence Hillsong United has had since the release of their first album two decades ago. Yes, they’ve sold millions of albums, racked up more than a billion streams and consistently sell out stadiums around the world. But the real measure of their impact isn’t in traditional music industry metrics. It’s in how many people sing songs that Houston and his bandmates have written in church services every single week.
As the legacy of Hillsong Worship continues to grow, the team remain committed to bringing the new song” to new generations of worshippers, believing that these declarations of faith and adoration would give birth to revival throughout the nations.
Back in 2017, the pressure of being a face of a global worship movement—while still dealing with the questions many Christians face as they grow in their faith—finally hit a breaking point when Houston left for the rundown cabin in Scotland.
Despite the season of doubt and the state of things in the world, Houston has hope that the thing United has helped fuel will inspire a new kind of worship movement. One that thinks outside the boxes to which the Church has constrained itself.

Hillsong are not every Christian’s cup of tea and I’m afraid that your public renunciation of your faith will do harm to them, and to the wider body of Christ. I can already feel the schadenfreude of those who dislike Hillsong – “see we told you that they were shallow and not ‘real’ Christians”. They conveniently forget that Christians from every tribe have fallen and left the faith. The joy of atheists who hate the God they don’t believe will also fill the web.
