Synthesizing arena rock with EDM, this Las Vegas-based quartet defined mainstream rock in the 2010s. Well-imagined dragons: an excellent performance from an extremely enthusiastic and (at times almost too) humble band, clearly enjoying every minute of their time on stage.
The band’s second studio album Smoke + Mirrors (2015) reached number one in the US, Canada and the UK. The album was preceded by the top 40 single “I Bet My Life”, and second and third singles, “Gold” and “Shots”. The band then embarked on a ten month long world tour, which led to a brief hiatus in 2016, with occasional performances and soundtrack contributions throughout the remainder of the year.
Imagine Dragons brings their full live performance to the COTA Super Stage on Friday, November 1, as part of the Formula 1 USGP race festivities. To enjoy the concert by Imagine Dragons, all you need is Friday F1 USGP admission.
This sets the tone for the clumsy earnestness of his between-song proclamations, but luckily what Imagine Dragons lack in blue-sky thinking, they make up for in crowdpleasing musical bangers. Much of Evolve was crafted with Swedish hit factory Mattman & Robin , who usually sprinkle gold dust over Selena Gomez and Britney Spears, and consequently I Don’t Know Why and Believer boast towering, tidal choruses. Reynolds talks of being diagnosed with severe depression years ago and fulsomely praises his therapist, and yet it is hard to believe that these glistening shells of songs are truly cathartic. Yesterday could be the 1975 after a few sessions down the gym; I Bet My Life is folky, Mumford & Sons-style soft-rock hokum with the depth and soul of a Post-it note.
In 2013 Imagine Dragons founded the Tyler Robinson Foundation to supply guidance, aid and support to young people with cancer. The band has raised more than $100,000 through the Playing It Forward street performance program to support school music programs. They have been part of fundraising events for “Do The Write Thing: National Campaign to Stop Violence,” and have performed concerts in support of Amnesty International. In 2015 Imagine Dragons released the song “I Was Me,” with proceeds from the release going to the UN Refugee Agency.
The award-winning Rolling Stone is such an important stop along the way to stardom for musical groups that Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show famously recorded a song imploring the magazine to feature them on its cover. But in its early days, the band Imagine Dragons chose to turn down a chance to be on Rolling Stone’s cover. It was the smartest decision they ever made.
On September 27, 2016, Imagine Dragons began teasing their third studio album with a tweet simply saying “studio”. The band continued posting cryptic messages on their Twitter account for the next four months. On January 28, 2017, the band started posting a series of videos teasing the album’s first single. 59 The time-lapse videos featured lead singer Dan Reynolds drawing surreal images on a drawing pad. Morse code was hidden in the videos and translated to “objects of same color”.
What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas, and Imagine Dragons are living proof. Named Billboard’s Breakthrough Band of 2013, the alt-rock foursome has quickly become the biggest Vegas band since The Killers, rising to international fame with hits like It’s Time” and Demons.” Propelled by their inventive mix of acoustic and electronic elements, 2012 debut Night Visions peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with three Top 40 singles including Radioactive,” which spent more than one consecutive year on the Billboard Hot 100. Some things belong in Vegas, but when it comes to live music, some secrets are too good to keep – fans looking for a little piece of Sin City can skip the plane ticket and catch Imagine Dragons LIVE in concert on the 2013 Night Visions Tour.
Night Visions” was a smash hit across the board as it was the highest charting rock album since 2006. It sold over 83,000 copies and reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Alternative and Rock Album chart. Other countries in which the album reached number one were the UK, Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Canada, to name but a few.
Reynolds also has scored some points with his own kids — three young daughters — thanks to Imagine Dragons’ new song Zero,” which the band wrote for the Disney animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet,” out Nov. 21.
Another negative of the night was the formation and style that the band chose to lay out. Lead singer Dan Reynolds played 80% of the show from an extended part of the stage that ran down the middle of the floor. At times, it seemed like a solo show for him, rather than a full band experience. I couldn’t even tell you any highlights from the other contributing members of Imagine Dragons.
Imagine Dragons have spoken out against conversion therapy in the US – watch footage of the band’s frontman Dan Reynolds calling for a nationwide ban of the practice below.
The band’s roster was finalized before Night Visions‘ release with Daniel Platzman on the drums, Wayne Sermon on guitar, and Ben McKee on bass. Their break-out single, Radioactive” was essential to putting Vegas on the map musically, citing The Killers before them. The song went on to becoming an international success, shattering the record for the most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 at 87 straight weeks.
Many awkward choices of covers with awkward musical production choices. Feels like as they only have about 4 hits, they just spent the entire first hour of the concert stalling for time, giving every band member a chance for a below-average, horribly sounding solo.
I also wasn’t as excited as expected for the show because the tour is in support of the groups much anticipated second album – Smoke and Mirrors. The record was put out in February of this year, and I was extremely disappointed. In my opinion, the Las Vegas rockers abandoned their alternative roots and made a poppy record that would just get radio play.
This steep rise is all the more remarkable as they are distinctly short on originality. While intermittently diverting, their sleek arena rock is essentially an opportunistic synthesis of current musical tropes and existing mega-bands, a classic example of success being one-tenth inspiration, nine-tenths perspiration.
Theresa Flaminio departed from Imagine Dragons in early 2012, leaving them as a four-piece. The band worked closely with Alex da Kid, with whom they recorded their first major label release at Westlake Recording Studios in West Hollywood, California An EP entitled Continued Silence was released on Valentine’s Day (February 14, 2012) digitally and peaked at number 40 on the Billboard 200 The band also released an EP titled Hear Me in 2012.
Reynolds, who describes himself as a fourth-generation Las Vegan raised in a very conservative Mormon family,” told Deadline at the time that he hoped the film would open church leaders’ eyes to how they treat LGBTQ members.
The band embarked on the Night Visions Tour in 2013. Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds and wife Aja Volkman welcomed a baby boy named Valentine on Wednesday morning.
