What we are seeing with reggaetón in Chile is a great testimony to the absolute powerhouse that is Latin America when it comes to building and delivering audiences for Latin artists,” said Mia Nygren, Managing Director for Spotify in Latin America.
j balvin concert msg – Grand Sierra Resort, Oct. 18, 2019
Modernica is happy to announce our collaboration with Chicago-based visual artist Louis De Guzman and global music artist J Balvin celebrating SpongeBob SquarePants 20th anniversary. Balvin was a featured vocalist on the Colombian version of Robin Thicke ‘s smash single “Blurred Lines,” which was issued in October of 2013, just prior to his own second album, La Familia. All four singles from the album charted in Colombia’s Top Ten, and “Yo Te Lo Dije” hit number two on the rhythm chart and number nine on the Latin pop chart in the U.S. The B Sides collection appeared in September of 2014, featuring two more radio chart-topping singles in “6 AM” and “Ay Vamos.” The latter won a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Song.
Colombian reggaeton singer J Balvin is a chart-topping recording artist whose polished urban singles (“Yo Te Lo Dije” and “Mi Gente”) and multi-platinum-selling albums (including 2012’s La Familia ) have not only made him a top-tier Latin pop crossover act, but someone capable of breaking the segregation of the American music industry’s language barrier. His success has made him one of the most recognizable members of the second generation of reggaeton artists and a trendsetter for new and high fashion.
J Balvin and Maluma are the faces of contemporary Colombia, and, just like Shakira a few years ago, they have helped wash away the harmful stereotypes that still subsist in popular culture. More so, they were both born and raised in the city of Medellín, which in the 1980s and 1990s became the infamous epicenter of the drug trade. J Balvin and Maluma are the perfect poster boys for the post-Escobar Medellín: creative, energetic and stepping firmly into the future. In one of the handful of photos together they have posted on social media, Maluma wrote: Medellin pal mundo cucho!! Medellin tiene mucha luz para dar!!” (From Medellin to the world!! Medellin has a lot of light to give!!). Great artists go back to their roots.
Balvin: I’m really humbled by each nomination. All of them make me very grateful to be recognized by the Academy. But I have to say that my Vibras album is a labor of love and a collection of songs that really mean a lot to me – especially, the song Mi Gente.” It broke a lot of barriers. So, I’m very proud of the grabación del año (Record of the Year) and álbum del año (Album of the Year) nominations.
J Balvin is the stage name of José Álvaro Osorio Balvín, from Medellín, Colombia. Balvin is a reggaeton singer whose polished urban singles and best-selling albums have made him a top-tier Latin pop artist. He became interested in music at a young age while listening to rap, champeta, bachata, and reggae on the radio. He was also a big fan of music videos; it was from these that he began to develop his dance moves and cultivate his own style.
Balvin: Latin trap is super necessary. I think it’s very important, and it will continue to be important. It allowed the old-school artists to be able to say, Okay, I have to leave my comfort zone and I’m going to get on this wave and reinvent myself.” Some might not reinvent themselves, but others will.
In many ways, Miami is ground zero for popular Latin music in the United States. With Latinx residents forming the majority of the Magic City’s population , Miamians — with their love of music like reggaeton and Latino urbano — are often bellwethers for new Latin artists and songs that go on to find success in the greater American market. It’s no surprise, then, that Colombian reggaeton superstar J Balvin’s concert at the American Airlines Arena felt almost like a homecoming for an artist who isn’t even from the 305.
His 2015 single “Ginza,” the official pre-release for his next album, entered the Hot Latin Songs chart at number one, topped several others, and was certified platinum. Balvin’s collaborations were as notable as his own work that year. He and Julión Álvarez were featured on Juan Gabriel’s single “La Frontera.” His “Latino Remix” of Justin Bieber‘s smash “Sorry” scored big for both artists at Latin pop radio and in digital streaming and downloads.
A J Balvin concert tour performance can last up to three hours. Expect up to 20 songs during the show, plus at least one encore. Encores can include up to five songs, so be sure you stay until the bitter end.
Balvin was joined by Cardi B and Bad Bunny for chart-topper “I Like It.” At least, giant bobblehead versions of them. It was a clever way to work the song in and make it a highlight. They even showed off some synchronized salsa moves.
The singer made a splash at the 2019 Grammys when he arrived hand in hand with Valentina Ferrer, a model and Miss Argentina 2014. Last summer, the New York Post reported that Balvin is crazy in love” with her, months after they made a joint appearance at the Ovadia & Songs fashion show in New York that February.
Both artists have created enigmatic personas that redefine Latin American masculinity. Going against traditional macho stereotypes, both take care of their appearance and choose styles that shine, form the clothes down to their often unique haircuts. They are more Lady Gaga than Daddy Yankee, and we say this in the best possible way.
José Álvaro Osorio Balvin (born May 7, 1985), known artistically as J. Balvin, is a Colombian reggaeton singer. Balvin was born in Medellín, the largest city of Antioquia and Colombia’s second largest populated city, where he became interested in hip hop, dancehall, champeta and bachata at a young age. He is known for his songs “Yo te lo dije”, “Tranquila”, “Ay vamos”, “6 AM” – featuring Farruko – and “Ginza”.
He may not be a household name in the UK, but 34-year-old J Balvin is arguably – statistically – one of the most successful musicians in the world right now. The Colombian is credited with the revival of reggaeton, with monthly streaming figures that currently surpass those of Drake, Justin Bieber and Cardi B. He is second only to the unstoppable Ed Sheeran. His recent release, Oasis – an ebullient eight-track joint album with Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny – was called historic” by both Fader and Vulture and goofy but incredibly fun” by Pitchfork. It clocked up 40m streams in one week. Granted, streaming can be a malleable metric, but across the board Balvin’s numbers are phenomenal. They made it official yesterday. I’m currently the most viewed artist on the planet on YouTube,” he says as we sit at a table shaped like a massive vulva.
According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Latin music has increased to $413 million , growing 18% since last year. Reggaeton and Trap have increased in popularity around the world, uncovering a new era in the music industry.
While Balvin performed a number of his collaborations with Bad Bunny (from Oasis as well as other projects), San Benito did not make an appearance in person at Saturday’s show. He did, however, appear in FriendsWithYou form: After a few introductory bars from Pete Rodriguez’s 1967 single I Like It Like That,” Balvin was joined onstage by hilarious big-headed versions of Cardi B and Bad Bunny as he performed his verse from I Like It,” the trio’s chart-topping hit from last year.
J Balvin has toured five times since the start of his career. He supported The Sun Comes Out World Tour in 2011 and the Sex and Love Tour in 2014. His first headlining tour was La Familia Tour with Becky G in 2015. He also headlined his Energía Tour in 2016 through 2018 and Vibras Tour in 2018.
His breakthrough came in 2014 with the single ” 6 AM ” featuring Puerto Rican singer Farruko which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. In 2016, he released Energia , which included the hit singles ” Ginza “, ” Bobo “, ” Safari “, and “Sigo Extrañándote”. In June 2017, J Balvin released the single ” Mi Gente ” with Willy William On 1 August 2017, “Mi Gente” topped the Global Top 50 on Spotify , and later reached one billion views on YouTube In January 2018, he released the hit single ” Machika ” featuring Jeon and Anitta He collaborated with Cardi B and Bad Bunny on the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one single ” I Like It “.
Set in a cabaret club, the music video for La Canción” most distinctly features the collaborators in traditional face makeup. It seems the reggaetoneros-turned-crooners are trying to kindle a sense of already being dead” to their exes, with an airy apparition eventually making its appearance on the dance floor. The moody, redlit atmosphere only adds to this phantasmal feeling. As a woman dances with her partner (and is, intentionally or not, dressed much like the salsa emoji), she appears to grow wistful at the song playing, too.
According to Spotify, Santiago, Chile is the world capital of reggaeton. Panamá and Puerto Rico may have been the birthplaces of the genre, and Colombia it’s biggest producer, but Chile’s capital city, Santiago, is the indisputable capital of the genre right now, with over 400 million plays per month.
Born of a series of benefit concerts she put together in Southern California in 2017 called Solidarity for Sanctuary, Muñoz’s dance parties raise funds to help immigrants navigate the bureaucratic minefield that is U.S. immigration policy to set them on the path to citizenship. In June, the NYC party was headlined by Kali Uchis, the Colombian-American singer with a critically acclaimed debut LP (2018’s Isolation) and collaborations with Gorillaz, Juanes, and Daniel Caesar. The platform must have liked having women at the front of the lineup, so they’ve confirmed an all-female lineup for the event in L.A. which is great news for the Latina artists.
His chameleonic adaptation into all music genres and his eccentric fashion sense has made him a unique symbol of the Latin Urban music staple. He has broken the stereotype of what it means to be a Reggaeton singer and hasn’t remained confined inside a single box.
