While the third album is still in its early stages, Pardi says he’s glad he’s able to create another record and continues to keep his songwriting muscles working. Although he admits there is some pressure to follow-up the huge success that was 2016’s California Sunrise, he’s taking it all in stride.
As is his artistry. Pardi wrote a bulk of the songs on California Sunrise, but he was more than willing to consider material from other Nashville songwriters. He discovered a bevy of tunes that had been overlooked in the rush for synthetic productions from some of his contemporaries. He used mostly the same band that backed him on the first album, and they were invested in both the music and Pardi.
Absolutely love this Jon Pardi Heartache Medication CD! This is traditional country music at it’s finest! This album is full of hits & hard for me to pick a favorite – my top 3 are Hat, 2.
Born and raised in Dixon, California, Jon Pardi was introduced to country music while still in nappies; endeared to the music of George Jones and Hank Williams Jr. Making use of his grandmother’s country karaoke machine, the young singer made his debut at the age of seven at his father’s 30th birthday party with the single Friends in Low Places”. By the age of 12 Pardi was writing his own songs with musical accompaniment, and subsequently joined his first band aged 14. After graduating from high school Jon, alongside friend Chase McGrew, Pardi formed a country music duo who played the regional club circuit, before enrolling in Butte Junior College and performing with the group Northern Comfort.

The internet has made the term “underrated” almost meaningless, but RaeLynn really doesn’t get enough credit as one of the better pop-oriented songwriters and vocalists on the national touring circuit. Between a recent tour with Maren Morris and this chance to perform at last night’s RSVP-only party, that might get rectified sooner than later. As for her set, a mix of prior album cuts and new tracks, plus a brief rendition of Ariana Grande’s “Thank U (Next)” , got the crowd pumped for Pardi.
After talking to several people in Nashville and learning more about Music Row and the songwriting community, he finally decided to made the leap from Northern California to Tennessee and hasn’t looked back since. While life as a musician is often a struggle, Pardi said it was songwriting that kept him going.
Asked what he thinks has spurred the ’90s obsession, Pardi — a winner of best new artist awards from both the Country Music Assn. and the Academy of Country Music — mused that perhaps people miss the variety of songs from that era. If you listen to country radio now, there’s a lot of stuff that sounds the same,” he said as he sat backstage nursing a vodka-soda. He meant the endless parade of slick, lightly hip-hop-inflected hits by the many ballcap-wearing dudes for whom Luke Bryan looms as large as George Jones. Yet he was quick to clarify that country, with its complicated ideas about down-home authenticity, is always doubling back on itself.
Things have come full circle for Pardi, who is also featured in the Country Music Hall of Fame beside some of his heroes. All the while, he credits his success to staying true to himself and never getting down when things weren’t happening the way he had hoped.
Fleener remembers falling hard for country around age 5 when she first heard Willie Nelson’s Whiskey River.” After that, she began to find the twang in her instrument, learning by ear. By her teens, she was a standout in fiddling contests, and after high school, she headed to Nashville to study commercial violin at Belmont University. Within weeks, she was hired to play in Larry Cordle’s bluegrass band, Lonesome Standard Time, which put her on the Opry stage for the first time. A few months later, platinum-selling artist Terri Clark asked her to join her touring band.
Duncan may not have any songs about her on Pardi’s new record, but she seems to be a permanent part of his life, which might include someday relocating from his current home outside of Nashville.
From the album’s first notes, Pardi makes it clear that he was raised on honest-to-goodness country music, even as he infuses it with a little more fire. One of the album’s tracks, Call Me Country,” unabashedly namechecks influences like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Indeed, within every single song on the 14 track album (seven of which Pardi co-wrote) runs a sense of authenticity rarely heard in country music today.
Perhaps it was when she found herself playing on the Grand Ole Opry at just age 18. Or maybe it was when a succession of country stars — Terri Clark, Martina McBride, Blake Shelton — invited her on their tours. Or maybe it was when her calendar had filled up, turning her into one of Nashville’s most sought-after studio musicians.
Watching Jon on stage was a hugely powerful experience. He’s relaxed, he’s confident, and he knows exactly how to get a crowd riled up and in the mood. The country singer has a really suave approach to his audience, and he kept giving us that sly smile of his – it really had the effect of feeling like he was singing for the crowd, rather than just at us. After he sang ‘When I’ve Been Drinking’, the crowd started swaying and dancing along to the beat, obviously won over by this charming young Californian.
There’s definitely a fan base out there that listens to all the music. California Sunrise is opening a new chapter to bigger things I would say. We’ve got a lot of great tours coming up next year that I can’t even talk about. You know how we’ve got to keep secrets,” he says with a laugh.

Still, it was the classic country music his grandmother exposed him to that set him on his path. She had this karaoke machine, and she’d play tracks and we’d sing along,” he recalled. Pardi learned to play guitar at age 9 and was writing songs by 12; after high school he gave college a try before moving to Chico and forming a band that didn’t last. Pardi is a California native, but he’s got the Nashville arithmetic down to a science. Break up with a woman, drown your sorrows and write about it. There are at least four songs here that find our protagonist listening to a jukebox and tipping back a beer or something stronger.
A stint with Martina McBride’s band followed for several years, and then Shelton came calling in 2013 with an invitation to join the house band on The Voice, which she’s performed on ever since. Now it’s his fans that keep him going. He says he is thinking of them as he begins to work on his third record, just like he did when carving away at California Sunrise. The whole ensemble was able to hone in on the core of Jon Pardi, that California, working-class kid who still finds inspiration in the unfettered sound of a dancehall guitar. It’s snarling, hard country for a new generation, a throwback sound to an energized audience that sees it as moving forward.
