KELSEA BALLERINII first meet Kelsea Ballerini for a photo shoot during a torrential downpour in New York City. I’ve said it a million times, but I really do feel like anyone who has a respect and a love for country music — if you’re an artist, or even as a songwriter, you want your story to land you on that stage at some point. When I first signed my record deal, that’s what I told the label: This is on the very, very tippity-top of my goal list. I want to play on that stage.” The Opry invited me to sing there before I had a hit… I don’t even think Love Me Like You Mean It” was Top 40. They invested in me early and allowed me to be a part of that history. So anytime I was able to be on the stage, I was on the stage. Every time I sang there, I covered a classic. It was always really important to me, to honor it as much as they would let me. I’m very aware that my sound is not necessarily considered traditional country music and the fact that they still believe in my roots and believe in the heart of my music, which will always be country — and still include me in that family — is really telling.

While it is hard to walk away from a toxic relationship with one person, an entire industry represents a much more formidable summit. Artists such as Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert have been using their influence to speak out against the marginalization of women in the genre, especially when it comes to radio, and giving opportunities to up-and-coming women to open for them on tour. Women in country music are committed to changing it for the better, even if the industry isn’t entirely on board yet.

Still, Ballerini struggled with feeling accepted. In a candid discussion with radio host Bobby Bones on his podcast earlier this year, the singer acknowledged she was thrilled that radio embraced her so quickly, even though the success of her pop-country hits made her really not cool” among industry folks in Nashville.

Ballerini struck a deal with her mom that she would attend college until she could prove that she could support herself with music. So she attended Lipscomb University in Nashville for two years before scoring a publishing deal with Black River Entertainment, which ultimately became her record label and helped launch her career.

I must say first that Hunter Hayes show was awful because the sound people had the sound to distortion. Just poor work. Kelsey was incredible. Great backdrop to her music. Her band was flawless as her performance was. She smiles constantly and is really having a fun time entertaining. She connected with everyone. Clean lyrics with a clear message for young girls and women alike about the ups and downs of life are just life. Move ahead with heart and purpose. She is a rare breed in music and will only get better. With her infectious smile and happy way I felt very good the entire show. Thank you Kelsey.

Ballerini tied the knot in December 2017 to musician Morgan Evans in what was, quite possibly, the most perfectly millennial wedding of all time The two said their vows barefoot on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Ballerini wore a flowing gown with layers of tulle and a lace bodice. And that’s about where the traditions stopped. They (and their 100 guests) took a shot of tequila after being pronounced husband and wife. Ballerini told People at the time of her wedding, “It’s a little bit different, but that’s how we started.” During the reception, the couple celebrated by eating tacos, churros, and ceviche while sipping on margaritas. All that was missing was a pineapple pool float and some rosé.

At this point, Ballerini could have easily acquired outside cuts (and surefire hits) by Nashville powerhouse songwriters. However, as she told Rolling Stone , she turned them down. While she admitted that she second-guessed that decision, it was important to prove herself as a songwriter: That for me is why I’m an artist,” she said.

Ballerini met husband Morgan Evans while co-hosting the CMC Awards in Australia. While Evans hails from the land Down Under, he was living in Nashville and the pair soon began dating. Evans proposed on Christmas Day in 2016 and the couple tied the knot in Mexico in December 2017.

The 24-year-old who grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee wrote her first song at the age of 12 for her mother. Three years later she moved to Nashville where she finished high school and attended Lipscomb University, a liberal arts school, for two years before she started chasing her dream of being a singer-songwriter.

For the first time in her career, the 25-year-old Knoxville native didn’t tour heavily this summer. She used the time to focus on making her third album. The break from the road – which she admits is short – also allowed her to reflect on the milestones she’s collected in the last six months.

Skyrocketing into the spotlight with her Platinum-selling #1 breakout smash-hit, Love Me Like You Mean It,” the 22-year-old Knoxville, Tennessee native has dedicated the better part of the last decade to creating inspiring music based on her life, to further motivate others to live without fear of their emotions. Her critically acclaimed full-length debut, The First Time, has Kelsea’s credit behind every song, as it radiates positivity while exploring all facets of the human experience. She is a bonafide poet and The First Time reflects just that.

This past spring at the Academy of Country Music Awards, Kelsea Ballerini dressed in a sparkly pink leotard and silver boots for a buoyant rendition of her hit Yeah Boy,” which she played on a shimmering guitar. Afterward, she posted a photo on Instagram with a caption that implied she had received some criticism.

Ballerini also wants fans and critics to know that she’s a songwriter at heart. When she moved to Nashville at 15 to start her career, she jumped at every chance to work with others, honing her craft — and losing some of her own confidence in the process. I started relying on other people’s creativity so much that I stopped believing in myself enough to write a song by myself,” she says. So High School” holds a special place for her as a window into her earnest identity as an artist. She spoke to TIME recently to explain why.KELSEA BALLERINI

We have 10 songs done, hundreds written, and we’re trying to figure what other colours and textures we need. There’s a song with horns, a song with a string quartet, two collaborations that are polar opposites, musically. I’m just having fun.

Written by Nicolle Galyon and Jimmy Robbins, Ballerini describes the premise of the track as a metaphor for somebody that seemingly has it all together and polished from the outside looking in.” The track airs a more sombre and emotional tone compared to Ballerini’s sophomore release, described by Belles and Gals as an ‘upbeat pop-country crossover’ The new project from Ballerini is expected to have more tracks to pull at listeners heartstrings and to cry to despite the fact that Ballerini is happily married to fellow country star Morgan Evans.

Kelsea Ballerini has confirmed that a new pop collaboration is in the works for her third album. Country star Kelsea Ballerini, 24, married Australian country artist Morgan Evans, 32, on Saturday in Cabo San Lucas.

On the latest episode of the Tone Countrycast , Ballerini revealed that a follow-up pop collaboration will appear on her third album. Rick Froio, Gordon Kerr, Kelsea Ballerini, Mike Wilson and Bill Macky pose with Ballerini’s plaque celebrating her five No. 1 songs in four years.

Homecoming Queen?” is the lead-off single from what will be Ballerini’s third album, and she promises the new music will reflect growth in ways far beyond this new vulnerability. Country-pop singer, Kelsea Ballerini brought her first arena-headlining tour “Miss Me More” to Hertz Arena in Estero, FL, April 25, 2019. The concert was sold out.

By the looks of it, she’s not far off. Unapologetically peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Country Album chart after its debut in November and spent 21 weeks floating there. But in moving up the ladder, there comes a deeper responsibility. For Ballerini, that’s staying relevant with her music.

Ballerini is currently basking in the success of her new single Homecoming Queen?,” which gave her the highest debut of her career on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart in September. The song debuted at No. 22 on the chart. Ballerini is set to release her third full-length album, which she says is her most personal work to date.

A Kelsea Ballerini concert tour performance can last up to two hours. Expect up to 15 songs during the show, plus at least one encore. Encores can include up to five songs, so be sure you stay until the very end.
