The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reported a sharp uptick in reported hate crimes in the fourth quarter of 2016. Researchers have shown that reported hate crimes following President Trump’s election made up the second largest surge since the FBI began collecting data in 1992. Yet the FBI’s annual Hate Crimes Statistics report vastly understates the true incidence of this problem. In 2017, the report reflected that approximately 7,000 hate crimes occurred nationwide, when the SPLC believes the number is closer to approximately 250,000 per year.

Khalid: Life to me is very full circle sometimes. BMW has always been my favorite car growing up. In my childhood days, my mom had a 3 Series. It had a dark earthy green color. I always used to want to drive it. The first time that I got to drive it – finally! – I was doing driver’s ed, so I was like oh my God, I don’t want to crash it.” My first car was a BMW 4 Series Convertible that I loved so much. It was like my baby. Then I kept seeing an M6 drive past me on the road and I was like, I got to step it up,” and I got me an M6 and bought my mom a 5 Series. To me, BMW is power. When I’m driving, I feel like I control the road. And now, I’m heading to Coachella in this electric BMW i8. I’m grateful.

This show was incredible! His opening act (prettymuch) was really fun to watch and very energetic. Khalid himself was a literal angel. He was so personable and took the time to talk to the audience between songs. Overall, I wish I could go back tonight.

Although he attained a major-label contract within months of uploading his first songs, “Location” moved into the mainstream at a slow tempo similar to that of the song itself and became a Top 20 pop hit just after the release of American Teen (2017), one of the biggest album debuts of the late 2010s. Within a period of just over a year, Khalid went from an unknown everyday teenager to a chart-topping, platinum-certified pop star with Grammy nominations for “Location” and American Teen, plus Logic ‘s “1-800-237-8255,” on which he appeared. Second album Free Spirit (2019) wasn’t released until two years after American Teen, but Khalid was busy throughout the interim with an assortment of featured appearances and collaborations highlighted by the Top Ten pop hits “Love Lies” (with Normani) and “Eastside” (headlined by Benny Blanco ).

Hailed as one of the voices of the millennial generation, Khalid found fame virtually overnight with a blend of melancholic R&B, smooth synth-pop and relatable tales of 21st-century teenage life. In stark contrast to his famously languid vocal delivery, the singer-songwriter is a magnetic force on stage, whether he’s jumping around with American flag-themed cheerleaders, revealing the stories behind the songs or inspiring the crowd to sing along to every word. He first hit the road in 2017 with the 21-city Location trek before announcing a more expansive American Teen tour that allowed both his North American and European fans to soak up the Khalid live experience.

Following the monumental success of his debut album American Teen (certified Gold in Australia), Khalid is gearing up to break new records with his sophomore effort, Free Spirit (out now via Sony Music). In February, he gave fans a taste of what was to come by dropping lead single ‘Talk’ , co-written with Disclosure, including their own remix of the song ‘Talk’ Disclosure VIP, adding to a stable of hits that’s truly staggering for an artist so young. Free Spirit also includes new tracks ‘Self’ and ‘My Bad’ The album features special guest John Mayer on the track ‘Outta My Head’.

Khalid: Yes, I always check mixes and masters in my BMW. My Beemer is like my private concert hall or sound studio. The sound system is crazy so after I record, I always go to my car and I listen to it while driving. Then I’m like wow, okay this is cool.” Or: Well, I’ve got to make these types of changes.” And the first time I heard a song of mine on the radio – this was in 2017 – was in a car. I was going shopping at this mall and hopped in my BMW 4 Series with my friend. I turned on the radio and it was playing the end of Location.” I’m just like, wow. My life is crazy and it’s going to get even crazier after this. Now I feel like I hear my song every single time I turn on the radio. It’s ridiculous. I’m thankful and it’s a blessing.

Khalid recently released his new single Talk ” along with the music video. CLICK HERE to watch. Written by Khalid and produced by Disclosure, Talk” is the lead single off Free Spirit.

Khalid: Yes. I love road-tripping. I love hopping into my car and driving from Los Angeles back home to El Paso. And I feel like I torture myself cause it’s 12 hours one way, but I do it all the time. I bring all of my cars and I’ll let some of my friends drive each one and we’ll just ride all the way over to El Paso.

Khalid: Healthy eating. And I definitely got to exercise to make sure my stamina is up and that I can breathe on the stage. It’s one of my first major shows since 2018, which is crazy. I just want to just make sure my energy is relatively chill, like I’m not psyching myself out and overthinking everything. And that everybody, my whole team, dancers, band, even behind the scenes on tech, I want to make sure that we all go in with great spirit and with good energy. Because if one person is off, then we’re all out of the rhythm and we can’t move the right way.

The proportion of Saudi women working is one of the lowest rates in the Arab region due to legal, logistical, and cultural restrictions that limit the type and place of work available to them. Saudi laws and regulations, including the segregation law, stipulate that different genders should be separated in the workplace. Accordingly, many businesses are discouraged by the high cost of maintaining separate premises for both genders. They find it economically prohibitive. These laws also deem a variety of professional occupations unsuitable for women and limit women’s ability to search for jobs because of restrictions on driving and interacting without male accompaniment.

In a conversation with BBC Journalist Frank Gardner, Prince Khalid discussed the security and political challenges faced by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

We all need to come together to combat this onslaught of hate crimes. Virginians have seen too many horrific acts of hate, including when white supremacists descended upon Charlottesville and murdered Heather Heyer. Those of us in leadership need to stand up against hate and do everything in our power to support those who are hurt by it,” Kaine said.

Khalid: I love Fleetwood Mac, so I definitely play Dreams” in my car when I’m feeling good. I love Panda Bear, he’s dope. The same for Still Woozy. Khalid is also tapping into new sectors which are currently occupied by immigrant males but which are more appropriate for women. For example, Khalid negotiated with the Ministry of Labor to convert whole sectors like cosmetics, lingerie, and accessories to a female labor force. Saudi women had stopped going to these shops and resorted to buying online due to the cultural discomfort of buying such personal products from a male. Opening up these sectors is estimated to provide 400,000 jobs in the next three years to be filled by Saudi women only. In other sectors where men and women could work side by side but have not, Khalid works directly with companies, such as one large hotel, encouraging them to employ women in the food and beverage and tourism sectors. These changes have had the added benefit of significantly government spending on unemployment benefits.
