Lauren Daigle was born on September 9, 1991 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Her home state inspired her musical stylings, which include blues and Cajun influences. As a young child, she spent so much time singing that her mother called their house the music box” She wrote her first song at the age of 5. Apparently, it was about chocolate milk.
No matter his material, the Canadian musician AHI (pronounced EYE”) has one unbreakable rule for his songwriting: he has to be able to see himself—and some truth—in his songs.
Growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana surrounded by gospel, zydeco, blues, and Cajun music, Christian praise & worship artist Lauren Daigle was always singing around the house as a child. However, it wasn’t until a serious illness kept her out of school for nearly two years beginning when she was 15 that she turned to music as both solace and a profession. Home-schooled during that time, music became Daigle’s hedge against social isolation, and she began singing at her local church as a praise & worship leader. Colleagues quickly encouraged her to try out for the American Idol television series, which she did in both 2010 and 2012.
Blessed with a voice that is both smoky and sweet, Daigle has forged a unique sound that combines the soulful, heart-in-throat vulnerability of Adele, with the passionate fire to serve God that Daigle admires in Brooke Fraser. Her Centricity Music debut, How Can It Be, is ripe with the kind of compelling lyrics and engaging melodies that invite listeners to draw closer to their creator, and that’s just what Daigle had in mind.
The demanding process of trying out for the show taught her a lot of valuable lessons, and she returned home determined to sharpen her writing and singing skills. She began pursuing a degree in child and family studies at Louisiana State University, and while there, was asked by a local band to help with vocals on an EP. A demo of the EP made its way to the Centricity Music label, and they signed Daigle as a solo artist in 2013. Her five-song debut EP, the Paul Mabury -produced How Can It Be , was released in late 2014 and landed on the Christian charts. In the spring of 2015, How Can It Be was expanded into a full-length LP and became both a critical and commercial success, crossing over to reach number 30 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and eventually going platinum. It was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.

When it comes to songwriting, my stuff has to be honest, and I have to feel like the song I sing can be spoken to someone or said to someone in a conversation,” AHI says. I have to be able to see myself in the narrator’s seat, and even if it’s not my specific story there has to be something in the song that’s coming from my voice and persona.” It is after the Ontario-based artist’s insistence upon truth-telling and his innate knack for storytelling that all else in his repertoire follows. In fact, while AHI himself prefers the familiar tag singer-songwriter” to be reversed when describing his music, he may be better served to be labeled a singer-storyteller.” At any rate, when considering his talents, it’s a shame that one of those descriptors must come after the hyphen, but a single glimmer of AHI’s voice—best described as gravel on silk”—will leave no doubt why singer” should still lead the charge.

Lauren Daigle and her opening act, AHI, were absolutely amazing. So uplifting, encouraging, fun & heart warming. Such beautiful voices too. However, the Raising Cane’s River Center must have had a broken air conditioner. It was MISERABLY HOT. That’s the reason for my low rating. If I wouldn’t have NEEDED to see Lauren Daigle as badly as I did, I would have found a ticket representative, demanded my money back, and not stayed for the concert.
