The ‘Someone You Loved’ hitmaker recently spent time with Sir Elton John and his lovely” family on board the ‘Tiny Dancer’ singer’s yacht and he had a brilliant” trip, although it often felt surreal when he remembered just how famous his host is.
lewis capaldi – SOLD OUT Lewis Capaldi
Lewis Capaldi has been swiping his fingers to the bone” on Tinder – but is still single. Meanwhile, Lana Del Rey received the gong for Song of the Decade thanks to her hit track ‘Video Games’ – which was released in 2011 – marking the first time the prestigious honour has been handed out at the ceremony.
Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent arrives as a deeply human debut, chronicling the scars, downfalls, and rejoicings of the myriad of highs and lows that accompany a life lived. It is the rare sort of album that feels like it could have only been created by someone capable of finding the beauty within those less-than-perfect moments and who understands the import of transforming those moments into utterly captivating song.
Lewis Capaldi released his new EP — Breach in November 2018. Breach contains two new songs, piano ballad Someone You Loved, and the gospel-inflected Something Borrowed, plus his two recently released tracks, the ode to lost love Tough, which has racked up more than seven million Spotify streams, and his current single, Grace, which has racked up more than four million Spotify streams.
Capaldi and his team are currently trying to balance giving the debut album its proper due, and working on things like stage design for the first time.
Capaldi’s right there with her. He has an album as dour as Adele’s 25 and a disposition just as relentlessly charming. In his music, he shares her supernatural ability to infuse sentimental treacle with authentic emotional stakes. Outside of his music, he’s like James Corden if James Corden wasn’t winking so hard at you. Whereas Sheeran’s ambition knows no bounds, Capaldi told radio host Elvis Duran he was content to remain a regional act and would have if not for his manager’s big thinking. Whereas Smith has maintained a passive-aggressive feud with Thom Yorke, Capaldi celebrated the sacred rite of being slagged off by Noel Gallagher. His self-clowning album title savvily anticipated the critiques his album has faced.
It’s making it all stand for something. It’s harder to break artists when you take away any physicality… when it all becomes a song-based thing. I get philosophical in my discussions with Lewis, and we talk about never only wanting to be as good as the next song we put out. We want lots of people to like the music – of course we do – but there’s still room to be that classic artist.
To reference Capaldi’s words from two years ago, he has succeeded in his aim. He has not created something completely shit; Capaldi has delivered a striking project that is poised to catapult him into the stratosphere of timeless, moving songwriters.
Capaldi: I really like Hollywood’ and Headspace”—they are two of my favorites. I wrote Headspace” when I was 17; it’s the oldest song on the album. I’ve always had this special feeling about it…it’s the perfect song to end the album. And Hollywood” is jaunty and happy—it’s a change of pace for the album, and people really seem to enjoy it.
It helps that Lewis is incredible to work with. He’s driven, he’s kind and he’s humble, but he’s also willing to dig in when it comes to thanking people, spending time on social media; he totally understands the importance of that.
In the UK, Someone You Loved was officially the biggest track – both in terms of streaming and all formats – in the first half of the year, while fellow Capaldi singles Grace (27) and Hold Me While You Wait (39) both made the midyear Top 40.
With Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, man of the minute Lewis Capaldi has managed to craft an awe-inspiringly alluring album that will leave a lasting impact on generations to come.
They might still strike you that way if you’re not persuaded by Capaldi’s persona, or if you have no room in your heart for well-executed shlock. His music is certainly not hip or forward-thinking. It’s the inverse of experimental. I don’t blame anyone who recoils upon noticing echoes of Marcus Mumford or Alex Clare (the guy who sang that pubstep” song in a Microsoft ad ) or even Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and the full post-Vedder butt-rock diaspora.
These tracks appear on Capaldi’s debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which has attracted more than 2 billion streams globally to date. It is signed to Virgin EMI in the UK, Capitol Music Group in the US, while Capaldi’s publishing is looked after by BMG.
The music video, starring the former Doctor Who star (and Lewis’ distant relative) Peter Capaldi , depicts him as a widower. He is content; however, when he meets a young mother and her family, who his wife had donated a heart to, and he gets to listen to her heartbeat again.
The story soon became familiar all over Europe, America & Australia and America where it became Capaldi’s first top 10 single in the US. With a record breaking 6 back-to-back completely sold out headline tours all over the world in less than 18 months, his ascent, simply unprecedented, his rapidly developing fanbase ravenous, outstripping the supply for tickets for every show. His talents didn’t go unnoticed among his peers with Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran & The Killers all inviting Capaldi to open their Arena & Stadium shows.
The artist doesn’t take himself too seriously despite his overnight fame and a mounting list of achievements. His Instagram feed includes a photo of himself in an American flag onesie. There’s also a video where he’s crooning his breakthrough single “Someone You Loved” into a toilet brush.
It’s easy to listen to Lewis Capaldi ‘s breakthrough hit, “Someone You Loved,” and assume that he’s still absolutely reeling from a devastating split. But to hear the 22-year-old tell it, he was already way, way over his ex by the time he wrote his signature bleeding-heart ballad.
The song Someone You Loved – included on 2018’s Breach EP as well as on the new record – currently sits at the No. 2 spot on the iTunes charts, has been certified multi-platinum in a handful of countries around the world, and racked up over a billion streams to date.

Soon after, the Scottish singer-songwriter signed to Virgin EMI Records and Capital Records.

He has been pretty busy since then, releasing two EPs, touring with Sam Smith, Niall Horan, and Ed Sheeran, spending an afternoon with Elton John, and dropping his debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent in May.

Standing onstage recently at the Royale nightclub here, the singer from Glasgow with the rough-edged voice delivered only a few lines of his chart-topping Someone You Loved” before nearly every member of the capacity crowd took up the song, hungry for the catharsis to be found in bellowing Capaldi’s words about the emotional cost of a loved one’s departure.

For now, he pulls off the impressive feat of making a raucous, celebratory show out of undiluted misery. He lets the austere, self-flagellating Lost on You and Headspace unfold without leavening the intensity with a gag, but the rest of the time he seems to be trying to outwit his own lyrics and jostle the pain out of them. Surely hearing 6,000 people, mostly women, sing back every word to him must help. There is an ecstatic sense of homecoming to this show: a freshly minted Scottish superstar performing a lap of honour in the heart of the capital in the middle of festival season.
Indeed, Capaldi is on sufficiently good terms with the ex-girlfriend about whom he wrote most of his songs that, as he worked on them, he’d send them to her to see what she thought.
Capaldi: I came out to L.A. for three trips—one was a longer trip, and two were quite short. In L.A., the bar is so high in terms of songwriting and musicianship. You think, Oh I better bring my A game.” Plus it’s sunny all the time—it makes you kind of want to get up and write, instead of when it’s gloomy and you want to stay in bed.
At that point we hadn’t played anyone any music – we didn’t want to wind anyone up, and we didn’t want anyone to get carried away with money and hype. I’d learnt from other experiences that, with Lewis, I wanted to sign a deal that was favorable in terms of excluding ancillary income, but put no pressure on the label at all – so they didn’t feel on a timeframe with it. Daniel was the first person who came to mind.
Lewis has become well-known for his hilarious Instagram Stories – almost as much as his music – but there’s no messing around from the singer-songwriter when it comes to recording new music.
Join Songkick to track Lewis Capaldi and get concert alerts when they play near you. BOSTON — Lewis Capaldi is the ugly-cry balladeer of 2019. Friends have already raised thousands of pounds for a family holiday but Dave’s big dream is to see Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi perform.
I think there’s that self-imposed, I wouldn’t say pressure, but it’s more like, Is that what people want from me?” Just the piano ballads, or do they want a bit of change and stuff like that? I think, for the most part, from what I’ve seen when I play live and what we see when we’re releasing new music, people do want that variety. I think those moments where it’s just like the piano and vocal aren’t as effective, on the album or in a live set, when you don’t have the bigger moments in there. Otherwise, it would just be like the most bland, boring album you’ve ever heard in your life.
Capaldi has just embarked on a U.S. tour for June, which started in Boston and includes sold-out shows in New York City, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and San Francisco. Most of the fans attending these concerts are seeing Capaldi perform for the first time, and he’s playing these U.S. shows with a full band. After he completes this June tour, he will touring Europe this summer. Then in September, Capaldi will return to the U.S. and perform in many other cities.
Capaldi’s an interesting case. His voice is an undeniably powerful instrument, a rich and textured soulful roar that sometimes quivers with fragility. He wields those vocal cords like a velvet sledgehammer. The man was born to breathe life into power ballads. Yet Capaldi’s personal demeanor could not be further from the high drama of his records. He’s goofy and self-effacing, casually cracking wise in interviews and navigating social media with intuitive expertise. If I had to sum up his public presence in one word, it would be delightful.
