As a youth, Lil Skies spent his time between Chambersburg and Waynesboro where his father – a local rhymer – planted seeds of rap success in the then 4-year-old toddler’s fertile mind. Maybe “The Clique” is the key here. When Lil Skies gets his version of Lil Uzi Vert‘s Maaly Raw-produced ” Do What I Want “—a brash earworm with a huge hook that doesn’t rely on prowess as much as aura—then things will take off immediately. In the meantime, get familiar with the kid. It’s only a matter of time before he finds a fourth note.
The Gen Z MC has already performed alongside eminent trap rappers such as Fetty Wap and Rich the Kid, and he’s now set to tour the United States starting December 5, kicking off at Chicago’s House of Blues.
The first single from the album, ‘Red Roses,’ was released in July 2017. The single became an instant hit and earned a place on the ‘Billboard Hot 100′ chart. The song was created in collaboration with rapper Landon Cube. Within a few weeks, the song reached the 69th spot, which was still a major achievement for a beginner such as him. The song was eventually certified gold” by the ‘RIAA,’ and its music video was launched on ‘YouTube’ in October.
Still smiling, he said, ” Yo, I’m so glad my first-time fallin’ happened here in Minnesota.” He earned a cheer from his fans. Hardly skipping a beat, the music comes back and Lil’ Skies picked up right where they left off, with full crowd support.
Born Kimetrius Foose, Lil Skies spent a majority of his life in Waynesboro, PA, where his roots in music were planted at birth. His father, Michael Burton Jr, is a construction worker in Pennsylvania; however, Burton moonlighted as a musician under the moniker, Dark Skies until Foose was a toddler. Dark Skies’ musical talents transferred over to his son, evident from his ability to freestyle from age 3. Music came easily to Skies, professing he didn’t take music as serious as he should. During a conversation with Billboard, Skies — whose name is an ode to his father — referred back to his mindset changing after nearly losing his father. (It) Definitely changed me,” Skies speaking of his father survived an explosion at work, I was still young, but in school, I just thought I was that dude.” Skies used this jolting moment to fuel his musical approach.
Taking cues from Wiz Khalifa‘s bad-boy eccentricity and Lil Wayne’s eclectic edge, Lil Skies’ showmanship is poised somewhere between rigor, grit, and a dash of flamboyance. Often seen sporting a charming yet mischievous grin and brightly colored braids to boot, Lil Skies’ enthusiasm and high energy both exhilarate and beguile audiences as he fiercely cues his brilliant trap beats.
At first I was skeptical of Pennsylvania rapper Lil Skies.” His style and sound seemed pretty basic. But after delving deeper into his catalogue of music I realized that the nineteen year old rapper is a breath of fresh air. Sometimes all the drama with rappers facing court cases, beefing with one another, and getting strung out on Xanax (among other things) clouds up the rap scene, but Lil Skies is the perfect antithesis to hip hop’s overcomplexity.
I had a fun time during the event!! He did sing his red roses song twice because we wanted him too! Fun time. For many Lil Skies is a household name and after dropping a debut studio album last Jan., he’s back again with his new album drop titled Shelby.
Skies would channel the dichotomous lessons he learned from his father’s aspirations to make a way and his mother’s determination to provide for her family into his studies and rhyming. A straight-A student in high school, Skies enrolled at Shippensburg University, where he continued to work on music between schoolwork. While he was the people’s champ in high school, it was the students of Shippensburg who immediately and fervently took to his music, eventually leading to an opportunity to open for Fetty Wap at a 2016 university-sponsored concert. The draw of that moment was too much to ignore, and within a few months, Skies would drop not only out of his school, but two buzzing mixtapes – Good Grades Bad Habits and Alone – via Soundcloud.
Waynesboro, PA does not come to mind when you think of contributions to hip-hop, but Kimetrius Lil Skies” Foose hopes to be that boundless rose to spring forth from the concrete. As a youth, Skies spent his time between Chambersburg and Waynesboro where his father – a local rhymer – planted seeds of rap success in the then toddler’s fertile mind.
Lil Skies has amassed an impressive following on SoundCloud despite growing up in such an unlikely hip-hop locale. Last week, his songs Red Roses,” Nowadays” and Creeping” were three of the Top 20 most-streamed songs on the platform. His songs are repetitive, punchy and melodic, mixing a teen’s me-against-the-world angst with hip-hop bravado, the lo-fi rants of SoundCloud rap with smooth singing. In turn both Red Roses” and Nowadays” hit the Hot 100, and Lil Skies eventually inked a deal with Atlantic Records, 2017’s top label in terms of overall chart performance.
Lil Skies was also savvy about using the internet to neutralize any geographical disadvantages he faced, migrating to SoundCloud and connecting with influential figures on YouTube. Watching a vlog from YouTube crew Cufboys – their channel has over 700,000 subscribers – Lil Skies happened to hear the group’s Landon Cube playing one of his songs. He reached out and befriended Cube and the other Cufboys, including booster Cameron Haller.
He’s dabbled with the idea of building around tunes, here and there. On Life of a Dark Rose, “Garden” is a more-than-passable slow-jam, closer “Nowadays” clings onto its one melodic idea and sticks it on repeat, and “The Clique” works around a bright, candy-flip beat from the ever-interesting Philadelphia producer Maaly Raw.
Lil Skies (born Kimetrius Foose) is one of the most hyped rappers to burst onto the burgeoning emo rap scene. Born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, in 1998, Foose began stitching up mixtapes as a tender third grader.
Waynesboro, Pennsylvania native Kimetrius Foose, more popularly known as Lil Skies” is not your ordinary 19-year-old. Though his hard, tattoo-saturated appearance may mislead you to believe stereotypes about him, beneath the surface lays a sharp and perceptive mind that gravitates towards punchy lyrics masked by melodic delivery, reminiscent of 50 Cent and Lil Wayne.
SoundCloud has become a promising platform for budding new artists, particularly rappers, to expand their reach. On his major debut, Life of a Dark Rose,” Philly up-and-comer Lil Skies attempts to show the world who he really is. Overall, listening to this was an enjoyable experience. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys trap music and wants a little more until the subgenre fades from being the cultural zeitgeist in contemporary music. Despite their liberal use of autotune, Skies and Cube both have solid vocals, which are enjoyable to say the least. Life of a Dark Rose” is a bit of a one-trick pony, but it is engaging front to back. Skies shows a decent amount of skill, but it would be nice to see him come into his own before the trap sound fades away completely. Hopefully he will be more ambitious in his future endeavors.

Skies is noticeably putting in more effort into the meaning of his music than the average trap rapper. While there are the typical trap cliches—drugs, money and girls—woven within these cliches are personal lyrics adding up to a moderately entertaining storyline. Most of the lyrics circle around his come-up and how his personal life has been affected since blowing up. There is not anything that would win a poetry contest, but the lyrics do give the listener a better idea of who Skies really is.
