maleficentAngelina Jolie stars as Maleficent in a live-action origin story that’s meant to do for this evil fairy what Wicked did for The Wizard of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West. While Maleficent isn’t flawless — it’s a touch too CGI heavy, and frankly, just because this is a darker retelling doesn’t mean the color palette must be as drab as it often is — the film does certainly demonstrate that there are new ideas to be gleaned from Disney remakes. At a time when it increasingly feels as though a remake is just an excuse to rehash ideas without a true sense of imagination in order to rake in money, Maleficent showcases the potential for a film to offer a fresh perspective, a welcome update on a classic fairy tale, and a gloriously rich character that an actor can truly sink her teeth into. As far as Disney live-action goes, Maleficent is a villain worthy of a following.

Eleanor Audley, the original voice actress for Maleficent also voiced Lady Tremaine from Cinderella In fact, they specifically chose Eleanor Audley to voice Maleficent because of her having earlier brought Lady Tremaine to chilling vocal life, as they needed a powerful voice for someone as evil as Maleficent.

Conveniently an Orphan : Both Maleficent and Stefan have been orphaned by the start of the film. The novelization explains that Maleficent’s parents were killed in the last war between humans and fairies, while Stefan’s were implied to have died from a plague.

Unfortunately, the rest of the film is a muddled mess. Pfeiffer plays the evil queen as if she’s working to earn every jewel she’s been encrusted in. Fanning is blandly good and earnest, which is all she needs to be, although one wishes she’d get a little less wide-eyed over time. But then again, she’s paired with the equally wide-eyed Harris Dickinson as her prince, so it works. (Dickinson is a recast from the first film, because the prince is really more of a prop than a person anyway.) Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ed Skrein play members of Maleficent’s newly discovered tribe but have little opportunity to do much. We sadly get less of Sam Riley as Maleficent’s sidekick Diaval. But we also blessedly get far less of the irritating trio of fairies from the original cartoon, played here by Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

Well, definitely Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning as Maleficent and Aurora, respectively, as it wouldn’t be the same without them. Adaptational Alternate Ending : Maleficent survives and King Stefan (who is now the film’s Big Bad ) is killed, and Maleficent, not the Prince, is the one who awakens Aurora from her curse.

Conversely, as Maleficent softens, Jolie imbues her performance with just enough warmth. The character never loses her edge, but she does grow to genuinely care for Aurora and the film affirms the idea that their bond supersedes any blood ties to King Stefan when it is Maleficent’s affection for the girl that is able to stir Aurora from her slumber. Turns out that a motherly love was the truest of all.


While Ingrith prepares for war, stoking fear and xenophobia against the folk across the river (how do writers think of these things?), Maleficent makes a life-changing discovery: She’s not the only Dark Fae left in the world.

Unfortunately, the way her story was told to the people living in this world has painted her as the villain, even though in reality she freed Aurora from the curse she originally cast. So when Prince Phillip asks Aurora to marry her and to celebrate, she and Maleficent are invited to dinner by Phillip’s mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer). The scene is tense and sparks war between humans and the fae.

Novelization : It actually has two. The main one sticks to the previous drafts of the script, so it includes such things as Maleficent’s parents ( named Hermia and Lysander ), Diaval being far more active in Aurora’s upbringing than Maleficent, and the Unresolved Sexual Tension between Maleficent and Diaval. A second novelization, by the same author, was published as The Curse of Maleficent and tells the story of the movie from Aurora’s perspective.

In 1991 Italian comic crossover Paperino in: La storia (in)finita (parody of the 1984 movie The Neverending Story), published in the Italian magazine Topolino, Maleficent appears as the leader of the Disney Villains and she is the equivalent of the wolf Gmork in the original movie and book.


The story of Maleficent starts years before the events of Sleeping Beauty, where Maleficent (Isobelle Molloy) is a young and powerful fairy living in a magical forest. There, she meets Stefan (Michael Higgins), a young human boy with whom she develops a strong bond.

2014’s Maleficent was simple, mature, and straight to the point. In a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story, the villain became victim: Maleficent cursed the king’s daughter as revenge for the king drugging and violating her; and the true love that awoke the princess came not from a man, but from Maleficent, who understood the suffering of a victimized girl. Mistress of Evil immediately gets off on the wrong foot by re-villainizing Maleficent in the title, but the movie isn’t always that oblivious.

Maleficent’s defeat was the goriest of the Disney villains’ defeats during Walt Disney ‘s lifetime and, to this day, is seen one of Disney’s most graphic deaths ever; when she was stabbed in the heart by Prince Phillip, blood was clearly visible oozing out from under the sword on the area of her chest that was stabbed.

Disproportionate Retribution : Instead of being snubbed by The King by not receiving an invitation to the christening, her issue was that he essentially crippled her! Granted taking it out on the daughter was a bit much, but this too was changed as Maleficent grew to love the girl and eventually take her revenge directly on the one who tried to kill her.

The Queen is later transformed into a goat for her crimes while Prince Phillip forms a peace pact between the fairies and humans. Maleficent reverts to her fairy form and breaks the spindle in the spinning wheel, awakening King John from his eternal slumber. When Prince Phillip marries Aurora, Maleficent flies away with a group of younger Dark Feys to promise to come back for their child’s christening.

Darkest Hour : In the climax, Diaval, in his dragon form, has been captured by the royal guard, unable to breathe fire due to being muzzled in the process; Aurora has run off, though this allows her to find and free Maleficent’s wings; and Maleficent herself is surrounded by a wall of iron shields while Stefan advances towards her in an iron suit specifically crafted to burn her upon contact, with his sword in hand, and it’s very, very clear that he’s willing to kill Maleficent, something that his younger self had struggled with. Oh, and the fact that the whole throne room is on fire just adds to the overall hellish imagery of the scene.

It’s spoiler time, so look away beastie if you haven’t seen Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil VFX Reel — A behind-the-scenes look showing us what was actually on set for the actors and what was filled in by CGI later.

As Sora and the Beast enter Hollow Bastion, Maleficent uses the power of the gathered Princesses of Heart to reveal the Final Keyhole in the Grand Hall. She is joined soon after by Riku, who is now possessed by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and armed with the Keyblade of heart Maleficent realizes with shock that the Keyhole and Keyblade are both incomplete, due to the absence of Kairi’s heart. She leaves to take care of Sora’s group herself, but she is defeated, and she retreats to the Chapel’s tower with the protagonists in pursuit. The possessed Riku arrives, and he impales her with his Keyblade, unlocking the darkness in her heart. Overwhelmed by the dark power, Maleficent transforms into a dragon and attacks Sora again, only to be defeated.

Angelina Jolie and co are back is this muddled and misguided sequel to Disney’s inverted fairy tale. I really enjoy getting a background on Maleficent. And while of course it’s different how Aurora’s story plays out from the original Disney animation, I still enjoyed it.

The rest of the film offers several twists and turns, considerably changing the events of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. It is dark and creepy?a film for adolescents, definitely not for small children, nor for adults who insist on strict logic, rather than dreamy evocation. I rather liked it. Angelina Jolie is stunning?with her high cheekbones and elegant dark beauty and ability to evoke empathy, she seems tailor-made for this role. The visual world building is often inspired and haunting.

Plot wise, however, the movie is a bit of a letdown. Jolie is wonderful at being (justifiably) mean – with her sharp face, scary green eyes, and clipped speaking tones – and she’s good at delivering the dry one liners. But to reduce her story to the cliche of a jilted and jealous ex-girlfriend is slightly disappointing and undercuts the movie’s other message: that you should strive to stay in the light, even when surrounded by darkness. While younger kids might be alternately scared or bored, older kids and adults might wish for a little more enchantment to go along with the effects. Still, Fanning, so lovely and bright-eyed, is well cast as teen Aurora, and worth seeing opposite Jolie.


Neil Jordan’s The Company of Wolves (Little Red Riding Hood) and Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bete (Beauty and the Beast) are more sophisticated, but Maleficent is often visually memorable, particularly as a 3D movie. When I was a tween or teenage girl, I would have loved this movie.

The union should unite the two kingdoms, but Phillip’s wicked mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), has other plans, and has been stoking intolerance towards the fantasy creatures that live across the river. This clash will lead Maleficent to return to the world of her own kind, where she finds that certain ‘dark fey’ fairies are just as keen on a war.

Hilariously Abusive Childhood : The trio of fairies create this out of carelessness, and are seen leaving Aurora outside, not noticing when she falls off a cliff, and apparently accidentally fed her spiders one time. Of course, it’s indicated that she would have died from this kind of thing if Maleficent hadn’t been watching over her.

Maleficent’s radicalized by her new peers, unaware that it’s all part of Queen Ingrith’s maniacal plan to goad her foe into battle, but the movie takes its time building up to that rather obvious revelation. Perhaps it assumes some audiences aren’t trained to connect the dots.

While it can’t escape some of the inherent tropes, Mistress of Evil” ventures past the usual happily ever after” rigmarole to craft a tale of parents and kids thematically similar to those Disney Channel Descendants” teen movies: There’s a fine line between hero and villain, and it’s OK to be a little bad sometimes.

Maleficent is back and so is Jolie, who, with her augmented cheekbones and perfectly calibrated hauteur, remains the only reason to bother with it. Much else has changed and not for the better, whatever this hash insists. At the end of the last installment, Maleficent enthroned her adored surrogate daughter, Aurora (Elle Fanning) — who had grown up to become the cursed and liberated beauty — and given her the Moors, a computer-generated peaceable and enchanted wonderland. Aurora rules benevolently from her flower throne, smiling over a menagerie of flowery, floofy and leathery creatures great and small, cutesy and stately.
