She had a handful of hits — the cheeky Rich,” the desperate I Could Use a Love Song,” the howling My Church” — that tartly underscored just how ideologically robust the rest of the genre wasn’t.

It took sidestepping country for Morris to get something like her due. “The Middle,” her 2018 electro-pop stomper with Zedd and Grey, hit No. 5 on the Hot 100, but also was the one least specific to her talents.
Basically, Morris has long-planned to shake up country music, and if her career has proven anything so far, she’s doing just that. So, fill up the truck and have the dog hop in the back, as we take a ride through the untold truth of Maren Morris.
We took the time to celebrate some of the Best Songs Released in 2018, as well as some of the Best Albums, so now it’s time to place a clothespin firmly on our noses, slip on some elbow-length rubber gloves, and go digging through the cesspool that is radio country to dredge up the absolute worst offenses.
Since her music didn’t immediately take off, The Middle” singer decided to use her skills to write songs for other artists Morris signed on with Yellow Dog Publishing and ultimately ended up penning some beautiful tracks for well-known country stars like Tim McGraw and American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson.
Later in 2016 Morris released her second radio single, 80s Mercedes,” which reached PLATINUM status, just before she tied for the most nominations with FIVE at the 50th Annual CMA Awards, including Album of the Year (HERO), FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR, SINGLE OF THE YEAR (My Church”), SONG OF THE YEAR (My Church”) and NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR which she won, marking her first CMA Award.
So Morris, still the shy kid at heart, decided to take a leap: Having saved up a couple thousand dollars, she found a creepy Craigslist apartment,” loaded up a U-Haul, and drove to Nashville with Kellie, where she vowed that she would give herself a year to land a job with a songwriting house or else come back home to Texas.
Just past 2 ‘clock on a Thursday afternoon, Maren Morris is seated on a stool in the middle of the Foundation Room at Dallas’ House of Blues, a spotlight shining in her face as she speaks into a local TV news camera. This is one of five interviews the breakout country star will do in the span of half an hour. Morris, from Arlington, is back in her former backyard to play her first-ever sold-out show.
It’s not that the success of The Middle” drew Morris excessively toward pop, though some roots-inclined listeners may differ. While there are a few fancy production flourishes, even some digital bleep-bloops, Morris has stuck mostly with Hero producer Busbee and her usual Music City co-writers, expanding her sound instead of giving it a makeover. Pop producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Sia) helms a couple of tracks, but they aren’t out of sync with the whole. Musically Girl is a logical extension from Hero, displaying Morris’ professed loves for both Dolly Parton and Ariana Grande. And Nashville’s most impressive new-generation vocalist sounds superior at 28 to three years earlier, with more nuance and dynamic range.
Morris spoke to NPR’s Audie Cornish from Nashville to talk about the concepts behind GIRL, giving herself time to “fill the well” of creativity after touring, flipping the status quo and more. Hear the radio version of their conversation at the audio link and read on for the adapted interview transcript.
A few years ago, three Nashville songwriters were having a bad morning. The day got better after they went to a bar. Speaking to Fox News in March , Hurd opened up about his marriage to Morris, who he wed last year in Nashville.
Maren Morris is having a good year, to say the least. Her sophomore album, Girl , had the highest streaming debut by a country female artist ever. The lead single of the same name just reached number one on country radio, and she’s currently in the middle of her first major headlining tour, which has been selling out venue after venue.
For her part, Maren Morris used this same lyric in her 2019 hit ” Flavor ” as a tribute to the Dixie Chicks and a warning to those who think she should be silent on controversial issues. “I love the Dixie Chicks so much,” she told BBC News “So I put that stupid phrase in the song because it brings me so much joy to just say, ‘Hell no!'” Morris added, “Anytime I’ve even voiced an opinion , whether it’s political or social, I’ve been told to ‘shut up and sing.’ But it’s an oxymoron. You can’t shut up and sing, you idiot.” Ultimately, the singer-songwriter concluded, “I get the say in how I’m perceived and how I perceive myself.” We love seeing celebs take a stand.
Of all the points to discuss with Morris, from the new album to the Girl tour to her record-breaking week, it’s her advocacy that she ponders the most. She doesn’t give terse answers, per se, though she doesn’t always have any new revelatory statement” to answer routine questions with. But that’s Morris’ strength. No matter what she sings about, what she stands for or who she is, Morris is always going to be the one with the megaphone talking about it,” she says. Then she admits, Anyways, I’m rambling.” And thank God she is.
Hero flirted with sugary pop and bombastic hard rock, but was recognizably a country music success story: Morris was named New Artist of the Year at the 2016 CMAs and has the bittersweet honor of standing among the few female artists still getting consistent country-radio airplay But The Middle” caused a goodly amount of anxiety that she’d Go Pop for good, radically compressing the gala-crossover trajectory of her friend Taylor Swift, who during the Arlington stop on her 2018 stadium tour brought out Morris for a hometown duet of The Middle.” It had the feel of a commencement ceremony; country music, which pays lip service to the idea of an open-minded, genre-crossing utopia but has few artists capable of delivering on that promise, clearly needed Morris far more than she needed it.
She’d continue on to deliver Common,” which is a sophisticated Adele-style pop number, and later the country-rocker All My Favorite People,” which brought opening act Cassadee Pope back out to the stage. And Morris and her five-piece band sounded great on pretty much every song.
Country and roots music have known such pop adventurers before. Think Taylor Swift. Before Swift, think Sheryl Crow , who plays bass on The Highwomen.” Before Crow, think Dolly Parton, who turned up to join the Highwomen at July’s Newport Folk Festival.
Morris: I think initially when I chose “Girl” to be the first single, I was looking at the Country Radio chart and there were no women. It was all men, but they had all their titles saying the word “girl” in it. I just thought, How funny and kind of tongue-in-cheek would it be at this point for me to put a song out as a girl, called “GIRL,” and then name the album that, and name the tour that and bring my girlfriends out on tour. I mean, it just felt like being in on the joke and moving it forward instead of complaining about it. Just really doing something about it.
