Marvel movies, we should note, are split into Phases, with the end of a Phase typically indicating a natural end to a story arc, while the beginning of a Phase signals the introduction of new, important characters.

Amit Katwala: I’d like to start by agreeing with Ken Loach that the Marvel movies are a bit like hamburgers, in that hamburgers are great and everyone loves them. Thor, Iron Man 2, and The Incredible Hulk are part of a set of films that Marvel fans know as “Fury’s Big Week.” The films occur concurrently on the Marvel movie timeline, each taking place in 2011’s busiest week.

Brie Larson will reprise her role as the universe’s most powerful superhero in a Captain Marvel sequel. Captain Marvel made her debut in a movie set in the 1990s Last we saw Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame, she was taking a break from patrolling the universe for baddies to help defend Earth against Thanos. It’s unclear whether Captain Marvel 2 will take place between the events of Captain Marvel and Endgame or after Thanos is defeated.

Fare thee well, Edward Norton—we hardly knew ye. He only appeared once in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before stepping out of the big green guy’s shadow (Mark Ruffalo took over). Nothing about this tentative franchise builder suggests there was any love lost; the movie has little on Ang Lee’s inspired 2003 take.

One of the stars of the upcoming superhero movie The Eternals has called it the most epic” Marvel movie yet. It’s fine, but Captain Marvel” feels like a movie from before Marvel Studios really hit its stride in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Right now it’s a movie that seems very much out of place.

Waititi has hinted that Love and Thunder will also take some inspiration from Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic run, which introduced the concept of Jane Foster as Thor. If you need a primer on what to expect, check out what the comics tell us about Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor.

This is a difficult one to place in this thematic structure. While it returns to the Earth-bound adventures, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is fantastical and funny. The bulk of the story is set before the events of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, so it makes sense to place it here. This particular viewing order does change how the post-credits scene plays, however. Rather than knowing what’s going on, you’ll have the same sense of shock and horror felt by Hank Pym or Scott Lang.

But, in the days that a franchise could focus on one character, it at least gave that character a chance to shine in their own film. We’re not saying the concept of the MCU isn’t great, but sometimes it’s even better to have a simple, solo narrative.

For me, for the filmmakers I came to love and respect, for my friends who started making movies around the same time that I did, cinema was about revelation — aesthetic, emotional and spiritual revelation. It was about characters — the complexity of people and their contradictory and sometimes paradoxical natures, the way they can hurt one another and love one another and suddenly come face to face with themselves.marvel, marvel movies

The depth and complexity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe cannot be understated. There is so much content to read, watch, analyze, theorize and we’ve collected it all here. If you want to know about all the upcoming Marvel releases or see the MCU in order of release date or in story order, look no further. Or perhaps you’re curious about our idea for the best order to watch the MCU: The Pegasus Order.

Digital Spy reports that the Oscar-winning filmmaker sat down with Empire this week for an interview promoting his forthcoming film The Irishman, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro During the chat, Scorsese shared his opinion about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it wasn’t pretty.

Set in 2011. It might not feature Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, but it’s still part of the MCU. Throw it in between Iron Man 2 and Thor for the full effect. This takes place at the same time as Iron Man 2 and Thor. So yeah, no more MCU movies, and no non-MCU Marvel movies for the rest of 2019. We’re getting a bit of a break from comic book movies in general, with only DC’s Joker” origin movie remaining on the calendar.

Watching Danvers come into her own here instead of by watching after TFA means you get more of the inside jokes as well as the nods to other scenes and films. By saving Captain Marvel’s appearance for here, you get a better sense of the world of Fury and Co. directly ahead of Infinity War, and that makes for a much more satisfying first outing with Thanos.

So, you might ask, what’s my problem? Why not just let superhero films and other franchise films be? The reason is simple. In many places around this country and around the world, franchise films are now your primary choice if you want to see something on the big screen. It’s a perilous time in film exhibition, and there are fewer independent theaters than ever. The equation has flipped and streaming has become the primary delivery system. Still, I don’t know a single filmmaker who doesn’t want to design films for the big screen, to be projected before audiences in theaters.

19. “Thor” (2011): Not Marvel’s greatest solo movie but one that takes some admirable swings. A quasi-family drama that boots Thor (Chris Hemsworth) from Asgard to Earth in fish-out-of-water fashion. After # 13, Ant-Man, the order should be Captain America: civil war, Black Panther, then Doctor Strange, then Spiderman, then Thor ragnarok, then ant-man and the wasp, then infinity wars.

Back in June 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed the Doctor Strange sequel was on the way and it would be set a number of years on” from the first film, which now makes sense following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Set in 2016. Takes place immediately after Civil War as T’Challa returns home following his father’s death in Vienna. Introduces Wakanda and several new and important characters to the MCU, including Okoye, Nakia, M’Baku and Shuri.

Prior to the fateful day of August 31, 2009, the fledgling Marvel Studios” had two certifiable hits under its belt: 2008’s The Incredible Hulk with $263 million worth of box office, and 2009’s Iron Man at $586 mil (all numbers worldwide estimates via via ).

Is it technically an MCU movie? Nope. But with all the legal weirdness going on between Marvel and Sony, and this franchise’s very multiversal concept, who’s really to say that it ISN’T an MCU movie either, right? In any case, the sequel to the best Spider-Man movie of all time is coming in 2022 with Avatar: The Last Airbender mastermind Joaquim Dos Santos directing and David Callaham writing.

So you’re not a completist but want to familiarize yourself with the MCU as quickly as possible? We get it. Not everyone has 48 whole hours to devote to just one franchise. Here’s where it gets a little tricky, though: Some of the best films aren’t necessarily the most important to watch for a greater understanding of the overarching narrative of the MCU.

There are so many reasons this movie shouldn’t work. I mean, nobody really grows up dreaming about being superhero who can shrink down and talk to ants. And Paul Rudd, as a superhero? Somehow, it works. Marvel leaned into the silliness of the character, and Rudd’s charm and self-deprecation makes this a surprisingly good addition to the MCU, providing a comedic note that helps round out the franchise.

Carol Danvers crashed onto the scene at the end of Avengers: Endgame , but her return in Captain Marvel 2 could be even more dramatic. According to a recent leak, the upcoming Marvel sequel will arrive much sooner than expected, and that could have big implications for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Arguably the biggest Netflix competitor to date and the new home for many new forthcoming Marvel shows, Disney Plus launched with 16 Marvel movies, including Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame.

There’s a new Thor in town, and her name is Jane Foster. Natalie Portman announced at San Diego Comic-Con that she will be returning to the franchise to wield Thor’s hammer in the next movie. This gender-flip is not unprecedented: A female Thor took up the mantle in the comics in 2014.

There, she meets up with fellow assassins who were trained in the same program as she was as a teenager, including characters played by Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz. They face off against the villain Taskmaster, who in the comics mirrors the fighting techniques of his opponents and trains other supervillains in hand-to-hand combat. Cate Shortland is directing.

CAPTAIN MARVEL effectively takes the spot formerly held by IRON MAN as the proper kickoff for the entire MCU. The story is primarily set in the mid-’90s and features the first evolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. and an important stage of Nick Fury’s career. The story also sets up the Kree (later seen in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and, most importantly, deals with an object that becomes significant toward the end of Marvel’s Phase One. As the origin story for Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), this also feels more like a Phase One movie than anything Marvel has done in the past few years. In terms of tone and theme, it sits well in the beginning of the viewing order. Yes, there’s a connection to INFINITY WAR and ENDGAME, but just keep this film’s first post-credits sequence in your back pocket for later.

In its third act, Black Panther also unwittingly exposes the limitations of the Marvel Studios machine. After a fabulously stylish sequence in South Korea, the film’s climactic battle in Wakanda feels generic and greenscreen-y, preoccupied with busy visual details in a way that undernourishes what should be a major emotional catharsis. It’s an all-too familiar issue with the MCU (and most superhero movies, in general), and it’s deflating to recognize that the very thing that allowed this miracle of a movie to exist at all is also what’s holding it back from being the best version of itself. That’s by inches, however, and the film is already so far ahead of (almost all of) its MCU brethren. So much of what makes Black Panther as great as it is also charts an invigorating new direction for Marvel ‘” one can only hope the company will take it.

There may be no new Avengers films on the schedule, but the MCU is introducing a new superhero squad. The Rider’s Chloe Zhao is directing The Eternals , about a group of ancient immortal beings watching over the Earth. Comics legend Jack Kirby created them in the ’70s, when he returned to Marvel after a brief time at DC Comics, and the 2020 film will follow the group’s clash against their longtime nemeses, the Deviants.
