Newsted left the band in 2001, which left Metallica without a bassist as they prepared to record 2003’s St. Anger. The laborious genesis of that album—and Metallica’s dysfunctional band relationship and further internal cracks—emerged in the brutally honest 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster. Still, bassist Robert Trujillo replaced Newsted in early 2003, and the Metallica juggernaut kept rolling forward.

A jaw-dropping tribute to Cliff Burton. The story of Metallica will forever include the loss of bassist Cliff Burton, who perished in a bus accident in 1986. Bass is not, by definition, the easiest of instruments to wield as a solo artist. Within the auspices of a sports arena filled with diehard metal fans, the prospect of hearing Scott Pingel, principal bass player for the San Francisco Symphony, perform on his own may have seemed at odds with the nature of the evening.
Hetfield traced many of his issues back to his childhood. His father abandoned the family when he was a teen living in the blue-collar Los Angeles suburb of Downey, and he went to live with a half brother after his mother died when he was 16 years old.
In 2008, “Death Magnetic”, produced by Rick Rubin , would surface and was hailed by many as Metallica’s return to thrash metal. Dave Mustaine, who was not inducted, was invited to the ceremony by the band but declined to attend. In 2011, Metallica collaborated with Lou Reed on the album, Lulu”, which was largely panned by critics and ignored by consumers.
As for my impressions, now, 20 years later, all I can say is I just don’t “feel” the album the way I used to. Don’t get me wrong, I still think this is a good record and I still love a few songs from it, namely “Unforgiven”, “Wherever I May Roam”, “Don’t Tread on Me”, “Nothing Else Matters”, and “My Friend of Misery” but it just doesn’t hold up over time like their 80s work did for some reason. It’s almost as if the album is TOO produced. I’m a fan of slick production, but this album is so spotless that it seems almost sterile at times. Which is a shame because it’s got a lot of good songs on it.
Although the tour was postponed, Metallica pledged to refund all tickets purchased for the WorldWired leg, which was scheduled to begin October 17th in Perth, Australia, and conclude November 2nd in Auckland, New Zealand.
However, it was not all positive. Lars Ulrich found himself at the centre of a war with file-sharing network Napster , and later being hospitalised following anxiety attacks when on tour , whilst James Hetfield checked into rehabilitation to deal with chronic alcohol abuse After an (in)famous Playboy magazine interview in 2001, Jason Newsted left the band; Bob Rock covered the bass playing in the recording sessions for 2003’s St. Anger With lyrics conveying the band’s angst (as documented in the frank 2004 video documentary Some Kind of Monster), and a controversial sound change featuring no solos and trashcan sounding drums, St. Anger achieved commercial success, but was widely criticized by reviewers and fans. For the tour, the bassist role was eventually filled by Robert Trujillo , formerly of Suicidal Tendencies , Infectious Grooves and Ozzy Osbourne ‘s band (with the latter taking Newsted as his bassist).
The tour was set to kick off in Perth, Australia, on Oct. 17 and wind up in Auckland, New Zealand, on Nov. 2. Although the dates were postponed, the band said all tickets would be fully refunded.
In 2001, as the band was preparing to begin work on a new album, Newsted quit the group, citing personal and musical reasons. Work on the new album was further complicated when Hetfield entered rehab for alcohol abuse. The album, called “St. Anger”, was eventually completed in 2003 with producer Bob Rock handling the bass. Upon its release, “St. Anger” drew mostly negative reviews. Following the recording, Robert Trujillo, formerly of Suicidal Tendencies , was hired as bassist. The making of the album was captured in the documentary Some Kind Of Monster”.
