mulan real life movie release date – ‘Mulan’ Voice Actor BD Wong Reacts To Disney’s Live

On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Disney is developing a live-action version of the 1998 animated film Mulan. Kneel Before Frodo : The emperor and then all of China bow to Mulan in the end.

mulan movie mushu – Meet Hua Mulan — The Legendary Warrior Behind The Disney Classic

mulan movieDisney’s mission of converting its classic animated stories from the past into live-action remakes is certainly an exciting one with everything to gain for viewers and fans of the studio’s universally appealing tales. It does appear, however, that Mulan doesn’t cut her hair short like she does in the cartoon iteration (her flowing locks even appear prominently in the film’s movie poster) nor does a Li Shang-like character crop up. There’s also a mention of a witch as one of the main villains, apparently instead of the Hun warlord Shan Yu we met in the original film.

The Chinese soldier patrolling the Great Wall during the film’s introduction. His facial expressions when the Huns start to scale the walls and at his first sighting of Shan Yu say it all. Rule of Three : Mulan’s family is the third in her village to receive a conscription notice.

The story takes place during a Hun invasion of China. Mulan’s father-a war hero- is called out to fight and defend the country against the northern invaders. However, Mulan realizes that her father is no longer the young man he was when he fought in the previous war and is in no condition to be on the front lines again. Sorrow for her own failures and concern for her father drive Mulan to cut her hair, don her fathers old uniform and leave to take his place in the armed forces.

Reportedly, Mulan’s love interest, Li Shang, will be replaced by a new character named Chen Honghui. Portrayed by actor Yoson An, this new warrior is full of himself, with a mean, bullying streak to him,” according to Pedestrian The 26-year-old actor, Yoson An, acted in movies like The Meg and the television series, Fresh Eggs.

Brilliant, but Lazy : Mulan at the start of the movie is quite intelligent, but it’s shown that she tries to cheat on her matchmaker test and gets her dog Little Brother to help with her chores while she’s running late. Training in the army takes away the laziness, and forces her to use her creativity in combat.

That’s not to say there won’t be any music at all; the live-action Mulan’s score will feature instrumental versions of the animated film’s classic soundtrack. But moviegoers hoping for a full-fledged singalong will have to rely on the original for that, as the new Mulan promises to cut a different path.

You Are Too Late : For Shang, who didn’t know that the note from his father was forged, he arrives in time to find the aftermath of the Huns’ grisly slaughter. He can only create a memorial for his father, accept Mulan’s compassion, and order his men to move out and stop the Huns from reaching the capital.

Avoiding a political stance is a tricky and sometimes avoidable situation; some have claimed Liu spoke out of duress by the Chinese government, as they had the potential to disown and ban the film outright. Yet Liu chose her side, and as a consequence, Disney will have to deal with the backlash of a boycott when the film is finally released.

Tossing aside the fact that this is a story set in Mandarin-dominant northern China that features only English-speaking characters, the various accents in the Mulan trailer have become the subject of moderate criticism For example, Mulan’s mother Hua Li is played by Rosalind Chao, a Chinese-American actress from California. In the film, she speaks with an immigrant Asian-American accent that sounds quite a bit different from Chinese actress Pei-Pei Cheng’s (The Matchmaker) or naturalized American citizen Liu Yifei’s (Mulan), who spent most of her life in China. The various accents could bring attention to the vastness of the Chinese diaspora, but the stylistic choice has not arrived without a few eyebrow-raises.

Besides the main protagonist Hua Mulan, Shaoxian’s novel also introduced other strong female characters, including a former concubine who becomes Mulan’s sworn sister, Lu Wanhua, and the formidable wife to the leader of the invading bandits, Miao Fengxian.

Conscription : Sets the main plot in motion. A decree goes out that every household in the region must provide at least one man to serve in the army for the war with the Huns. Since the only man in the Fa household is Mulan’s elderly father, for whom going to war would be a death sentence, Mulan disguises herself as a man and goes in his stead.

Mulan’s release date is set for March 27, 2020, and Disney just gave us the first full trailer showing off Chinese-American actress Yifei Liu in the title role. Likewise, Mulan’s grandmother ships her granddaughter and Shang the minute she finds out about him. She does not possess the emperor’s subtlety.

Given the success of the original movie, which earned more than $300 million worldwide and landed Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, you can see the temptation to be as faithful as possible. But what works in animation doesn’t, of course, always translate well to a live-action story, and it appears as though the writers and Caro have approached the story as a realistic war drama.

So far, there is no historical evidence that Mulan really existed and her story’s roots in oral tradition makes it even more difficult to confirm whether she was a real person. However, the possibility can’t entirely be dismissed. Women warriors and elite women commanding military arms have occurred many a times throughout Chinese history.

Disney is not slowing down on its live-action remakes. Hot on the heels of Dumbo and Aladdin, the second half of 2019 brought a whole slew of live-action versions of your faves, including The Lion King and Lady and the Tramp.

When animated Mulan leaves home and slices off her hair with one flick of a sword, she’s leaving behind the life she once led! She’s mentally preparing to die in war to save her father’s life! It makes little to no physical sense, but it’s still somehow more than iconic. In the teaser we clearly see Mulan post-Ping with her long hair flowing in the wind, curled from being in a bun for so long. Why is her hair long? Perhaps as a flawed attempt to keep the girly” in girly, martial arts epic?” Or probably because it’s nearly impossible to get a human person to succeed in slicing thick hair off in one go, even with movie magic.

Towards the climax, when Mulan reveals that it was she who destroyed the Hun army, Shan Yu isn’t at all shocked and calls her “the soldier from the mountains.” Then he comes at her without wasting any time with the usual “I can’t hit a girl” or “I was beaten by a woman?!” stuff villains usually spout when facing a female opponent.

While the original Mulan was a box -office success and had no need to be remade in live-action, the likelihood of other movies receiving some form of redemption hinges on how the 2020 film performs. Animated movies like The Black Cauldron , Atlantis: The Lost Empire , and Treasure Planet all underperformed at the time of their release.

Additionally, Khan the horse, Mulan, and Shang are all being held up by a single rope, implied to be tied in one knot somewhere on the horse’s tack. That’s an impressive rope to be able to pull something like 1400 pounds at a dead lift without breaking.

On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Disney is developing a live-action version of the 1998 animated film Mulan. Based on the Chinese legend of female warrior Hua Mulan, the movie followed a young girl who took her father’s place in the army by disguising herself as a man. She learns how to be a skilled warrior and eventually rescues the Emperor from the villainous Huns, all the while finding a husband and restoring honor to her family.

Mulan was almost a PG movie but went by different standards to get G. If it had been rated PG, it would have been the second Disney movie to be rated this after The Black Cauldron and the first Disney Princess movie to be rated PG.

What does that mean for songs like Reflection” and I’ll Make a Man Out Of You?” Will Li Shang and Mushu be included in this adaptation? Here’s what we know about Walt Disney Studio’s live-action remake of Mulan. Disney’s live action remake of Mulan is set to drop in UK cinemas on March 27 2020.

Jet Li born Li Lian Jie in Beijing, China. He started training at the Beijing wushu academy (wushu is China’s national sport, largely a performance version of various martial art styles) at age eight. He won five gold medals in the Chinese championships, his first when he was only 11. In his teens, he was already a national coach, and before he was 20 he had starred in his first movie: Shaolin Temple (1982), which started the 1980s Kung-Fu boom in mainland China. He relocated to Hong Kong, where he was the biggest star of the early 1990s Kung-Fu boom. His first directorial effort was Born to Defense (1986).

Shan-Yu doesn’t even question that “the soldier from the mountains” would be a woman when Mulan reveals herself to him. In Hun society, women were equal with men in many ways, including eligibility to join the army and hunting. It didn’t matter that she was a woman; to him, she was just another soldier.

The 1998 animation has had a full overhaul, top to bottom, from story to songs (or lack of). The remake joins a long list of classic films Disney is giving the live-action treatment to, joining Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Aladdin, The Lion King and Jungle Book.

Disney’s cross-cultural retelling of a popular Chinese folk tale about a peasant girl who disguises herself as a man and takes her ailing father’s place in the emperor’s army turns the traditional fairy tale ending on its head. This time, the princess rescues the prince.

I Owe You My Life : Shang to Mulan. This life-debt becomes immediately useful when Mulan is found out, and the punishment for a woman joining the army is death. Instead of killing her, Shang lets her go free. In the next scene, we’re shown that he did leave her a good amount of provisions and her horse, which she promptly rides back into town after learning the Huns are alive.

Disney was keen to promote Mulan to the Chinese, hoping they might replicate their success with their 1994 film The Lion King , which was one of the country’s highest-grossing Western films at that time. Disney also hoped it might smooth over relations with the Chinese government which had soured after the release of Kundun, a Disney-funded biography of the Dalai Lama that the Chinese government considered politically provocative. China had threatened to curtail business negotiations with Disney over that film and, as the government only accepts 10 Western films per year to be shown in their country, Mulan’s chances of being accepted were low. Finally, after a year’s delay, the Chinese government did allow the film a limited Chinese release, but only after the Chinese New Year, so as to ensure that local films dominated the more lucrative holiday market.

Mulan director Niki Caro has sadly revealed that the upcoming live-action remake won’t feature “an update” of the animated film’s fan-favourite character Mushu. B.D. Wong, star of the upcoming Mulan , revealed many fans were surprised – and a bit disappointed – to learn that he doesn’t resemble his character, Captain Li Shang, in the remake of the 1998 Disney classic.

No, Li Shang is not in the Mulan remake! This caused a lot of controversy when it emerged in 2017. A casting call notice listed the characters in the new movie, but left of Mulan’s love interest, instead listing Chen Honghui. Disney has since confirmed he will replace Li Shang as the main love interest for our heroine.

It doesn’t seem like Mushu, the mayhem-loving dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy in 1998’s Mulan, will be making an appearance in the live-action version. Which, fine, we’ll get enough humans interacting with CGI sidekicks in The Little Mermaid. Instead, the Mulan trailer suggests Disney is taking a slightly more realistic, wuxia approach to the famous warrior’s story, one that might not require the comedic relief of a talking animal. To back that theory up, neither Mushu nor any of the guardians is currently listed as a character on IMDb So unless Disney is going to surprise us all with a last-minute casting announcement, we can kiss that dream goodbye. Cri-Kee, however, who is credited simply as Cricket” in the live-action movie, does have a voice actor: Jun Yu.

It’s difficult to compare Disney’s version to the legend of Hua Mulan since the ancient folk story produced countless iterations way before the animated movie was made. Some were made as comedies or romantic stories while others were dramas with unfortunate endings (one devastating version has Mulan commit suicide to avoid being turned into a concubine).

Early critics have complained of numerous historical inaccuracies with the source material of Mulan. This will likely be very costly for Mulan’s box office, as China is heavily relied upon to bring in money via international ticket sales. To complicate matters further, Mulan star Liu Yifei spoke out in favor of police brutality at the height of the Hong Kong protests which broke out in the latter half of 2019.

Combat Pragmatist : After Shan Yu beats Shang to a pulp, Mulan wisely intuits that she won’t win a head-on fight with Shan Yu after she goads him to take his vengeance on her. Instead, she lures him to the roof and distracts him long enough to pin him down and has Mushu light the largest firework he can find.

Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy : Completely subverted on both sides. Shang’s Training from Hell ensures that when his soldiers fire cannons, there’s always an impact. Mulan’s cannon in particular saves the entire army with her aim. The Huns in the meantime manage to hit Shang from a distance.

Among Disney’s famed antagonists, Mulan’s Shan-Yu is one of the most forgettable. The leader of the Hun army is ruthless and intimidating but he was given very little to do and wasn’t carefully developed. Perhaps this is why the next iteration of the story will feature completely new villains, with the main antagonist being a powerful witch named Xian Lang, played by Gong Li. The actress also played the main baddie in Memoirs of a Geisha in 2005 to much acclaim. Her inclusion adds an element of magic to Mulan not before seen, perhaps creating new circumstances for the army. Jason Scott Lee is also joining Mulan as Bori Khan who is a warrior leader seeking to avenge his father’s death and who aligns himself with Xian Lang. Lee is best known for his portrayal of Bruce Lee in 1993’s Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and his voice role of David in Lilo & Stitch.
