Following the release of “Up Down,” his breakout single featuring Florida Georgia Line , Morgan Wallen is making waves in country music. Wallen started woodshedding as a songwriter, working with the likes of Wiseman (Live Like You Were Dying”), Rodney Clawson (Dirt”), Chris Tompkins (Drunk On A Plane”), the Warren Brothers (Highway Don’t Care”), Tommy Cecil (Home Alone Tonight”) and Matt Dragstrem (Sippin’ On Fire”). Meanwhile, Big Loud proved that it was big-league – while Wallen worked on his own music, the label’s first-ever single, Chris Lane’s Fix,” went into the Top 15 and continued climbing, an unheard-of start for a brand-new label.
The tour (the latest incarnation of the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour) kicks off January 2nd in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and hits theaters and auditoriums in New Orleans, Raleigh, Philadelphia, and Denver, among others. Now You Know” singer Jon Langston and Ashland Craft, like Wallen, a former contestant on The Voice, will open all dates.
Wallen: I’ve only been writing for about four or five years now. I’ve hit a good stride, although I still think I can learn, I think I can be better. It’s fun. There’s no real certain way that I go into it. I feel like I found a good crew of guys that I really love writing with, and it took me a while to find that match. We’re good buddies now, which really helps me. You don’t hold anything back when you’ve got your buddies. You have a good connection and energy in the room that really makes a difference. We kind of half B.S., and half write a song, and that really helps.
Wallen just released “Chasin’ You,” the fourth and perhaps final single from his 2018 If I Know Me record. Earlier this summer, Wallen unveiled hypnotic collaboration with Diplo, Heartless,” and will hit the road on Jason Aldean’s WE BACK TOUR next year.
Appearing on Wallen’s Top 10 album debut, If I Know Me, the smooth burning anthem marks his first Hot Country Songs #1 – following the PLATINUM-certified success of hooky single Up Down” (featuring Florida Georgia Line) that hit #5 on the Hot Country Songs chart and led the Country Airplay chart in the same week, becoming his first Country radio #1. The song is currently inside the Top 5 at Country radio and still climbing.
Country music artist Morgan Wallen has just announced North American tour dates for 2020 that will be dubbed the Whiskey Glasses Road Show,” which will help promote his hit single Whiskey Glasses” from his successful debut album, If I Know Me. These tour dates will begin on January 2nd in Grand Rapids, MI and will continue through May 1st in Denver, CO.
It’s 24 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for Bebe Rexha’s collaboration with Florida Georgia Line, Meant To Be.” This means the song first recorded and released solely as a pop single has now tied Florida Georgia Line’s Cruise” for the 2nd longest-running #1 single in the Billboard Hot Country Songs history.
I had the chance to chat with Morgan Wallen today leading up to the big show with Florida Georgia Line. Lucky for Big Loud Records breakout artist Morgan Wallen, that quality runs in his blood.
Wallen: I’ve never been the type of person that created a seven-year plan or whatever they call it. I moved to Nashville with big dreams and high hopes, and I felt like it was very possible. I really believe that me and my team have the capability to last and stick around in this genre. As long as we’re getting to play in front of people, and as long as we’re all working and we’re all having fun, as long as that’s the case, I’ll be 100% happy.
Before he rose to chart-topping status as an artist, Wallen scored his first #1 hit as a songwriter with Jason Aldean’s hit, You Make it Easy.” He has also been nominated for Breakthrough Artist-Writer of the Year at the 2018 Music Row Awards. Wallen is currently opening for Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country Tour. Wallen has also co-written songs for Kane Brown, Dustin Lynch abd A Thousand Horses.
Wallen: It was a complete surprise. I wasn’t even thinking about something like that. It was about 30 minutes before we went on stage on national TV, and you have a lot going through your mind. They said Jimmy comes in and talks to people before they go perform, but just for a second was what I thought. He keeps on hanging around. I’m thinking Dang, he must think we’re cool or something (laughs). But he was just waiting on the plaque to get in there to present it to us. That was awesome.
I know that I come from a place of small-town roots and of humble beginnings and I try to keep those things in my songs – just stuff that I know people like me can relate to,” Wallen told Rolling Stone last year of his songs’ appeal.
Morgan Wallen is a good example that even if one of the artists doesn’t win The Voice (or any competition like that), they can still achieve their dreams by using that exposure along with hard work and dedication to equal success.
Wallen: I definitely didn’t expect that with this song. Just because I feel like it’s really country. It definitely is. The subject matter, the sounds, everything that we used. But I think it’s just a fresh-sounding song with the phrasing and the rhythm and all of the production that we used, so it doesn’t completely shock me. But it is cool that I’ve noticed a lot of people who say, “I don’t listen to country music but I like ‘Whiskey Glasses.'” And they’ll start listening to other songs of mine. It’s cool to be able to relate to people who aren’t necessarily from the same way of life as me or don’t even maybe know what I’m talking about in some of my songs. It’s just cool that music has that ability to do that.
Possessing a smooth, evocative voice, Canaan Smith could have pursued success in any genre of music, but was always drawn to country. It’s all about the stories,” Smith says. Smith’s debut album, BRONCO, which includes the RIAA Platinum-Certified No. 1 hit, Love You Like That” debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard’s Country Albums Chart. Love You Like That” is also one of the top streaming tracks from all new artists in country music. The chart-rising singer-songwriter is now signed to trailblazing music publishing roster Tree Vibez Music. Along with his headlining dates, he has been burning up the highways in recent years with the likes of Dierks Bentley, Brantley Gilbert, and Kip Moore, playing well over 550 shows for more than two million fans.
Wallen: It’s the biggest thing I’ve gotten to do so far in my career. Luke’s awesome, and his team’s awesome. I’ve heard a lot of people say that Luke is the same guy that he was when he first started…I can 100% see that. He’s just a good ol’ boy, and he has a great time performing, and feeds off of people. I think that’s the most important thing that I’ve taken away from his performance so far is seeing his transparency with the people. I think whatever the quality is that makes you yourself, if you let those true colors show through on stage, I think that’s what makes people really get it.
His mother signed him up to audition for NBC’s The Voice, convinced that he’d do well. Wallen had no idea what to expect – he’d never seen the show – but he was chosen by Usher and was later stolen by Adam Levine. The last song he performed during his run, a cover of Florida Georgia Line’s Stay,” helped him steer him toward his creative destiny.
Written by Ben Burgess and Kevin Kadish, the undeniable single comes in as the #2 current Country song in overall consumption this week, and has also garnered more than 173 million digital streams globally, helping push Wallen’s career total over the 829 million streams mark and drive his exhilarating concerts.
I really love Morgan Wallen. His music is great and he sounds great. I do think the concert could have had a better setup however. The stage was too low to the ground, so we were just below eye level with Morgan and made it really hard to see with all the girls on peoples shoulders and whatnot. The sound was also not very great. Me and my entire group of friends (there were 9 of us) could not understand what he was saying in between songs when he was talking.
