It manages to dip into millennial nostalgia—the video’s opening harkens back to the days of watching 106th & Park after school—while orienting itself toward the future: Normani as a bonafide pop and R&B star.

Born in Atlanta, Normani grew up in New Orleans before moving to Houston at 9 years old with her family after Hurricane Katrina. There was a certain type of pressure and anxiousness knowing this was Normani’s first big solo performance and that it was at the VMAs, where so many iconic performances have taken place. The song has also been supported by fellow musicians, including Ariana Grande, who Normani toured with earlier this year.
BH: Having worked with Normani in the past, I’ve been able to experience the evolution of her personal style. Right now, she’s focusing on bringing all the nostalgia of the 90s to her music, performances and style on stage.
Previously, Normani was a duet partner to both Khalid on “Love Lies” and Sam Smith on “Dancing With a Stranger.” Both songs hit the top 10 of the Hot 100, according to Billboard. She is a former member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which announced its hiatus in March 2018, and a former contestant of Dancing With The Stars, having competed during Season 24 in 2017.
ET caught up with Normani at the AMAs last October , shortly after the release of her collaboration with Kahlid on “Love Lies,” and the singer said she’s had a lot of projects in the works that will make her fans happy.
Before going away, Wayne recorded material that formed into his eighth studio album, I Am Not A Human Being. The album received favorable reviews from critics and earned a Top 10 hit with its lead single Right Above It” featuring Drake.
Since the group’s split in 2017, the world has patiently waited for Normani’s breakout success being that she was a standout performer amongst her group members. With the release of her first single since going solo, a duet with R&B singer Khalid, Love Lies” became number one on the pop charts for two weeks and peaked within the top 10 of the overall Billboard Hot 100. The set featured dynamic chemistry between the two singers, sultry vocals, strong stage presence, and a dance break that left the internet shook! It turns out, the 23-year-old is all about focusing on herself these days. She hasn’t been romantically linked to anyone recently. When she was on the X Factor in 2012, she was rumored to be dating contestant Arin Ray. The two reportedly split in 2013, then she became linked to bandmate Dinah Jane’s cousin Thomas Hansen. Normani was also rumored to be dating her Dancing with the Stars partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy in 2017, as well as actor Kendrick Sampson. However, the singer has never denied or confirmed any of these relationships.
And while a comparison to Beyoncé can’t possibly feel like a bad thing, especially for a young artist breaking out with a solo career following years in a formulated group — Fifth Harmony — Normani is less pleased with being called by someone else’s name than simply enjoying the cosign of her hero as she ventures out into the world, truly for the first time, on her own.
Normani’s dance abilities have been getting extra attention in the past few months after the singer’s buzzed-about “Motivation” music video and VMAs performance Rihanna did not let the young artist’s talents go unnoticed.

Lil Wayne went through a brief creative shift in 2010 when he dropped his seventh studio album Rebirth. The album is Wayne’s first and only rock record, a move that puzzled fans. It received negative reviews but did well on the Billboard charts, debuting at No. 2 and selling 176,000 copies in its first week. Each of the four singles obtained success on the charts, including the Eminem-assisted Drop The World” which went quadruple platinum. Unfortunately, Wayne spent much of 2010 dealing with legal issues that landed him in Rikers Island to serve an eight month sentence for criminal possession of a weapon.
