Nothing is sacred anymore. The actress stars in Horse Girl, a new film that is poised to be way more twisted than anything we’ve seen from her before. All the new bitches in all the commercials and all the movies and all the fashion shows are horse girls.

horse girl netflix movie – Umm, What’s Happening With This Trailer For Netflix’s ‘Horse Girl’?

Horse GirlA sweet misfit with a fondness for crafts, horses and supernatural crime shows finds her increasingly lucid dreams trickling into her waking life. So I went to Jeff Baena and talked to him about it. I didn’t want to write it alone. I’ve never written anything before, and I just didn’t have the discipline. He’d been talking to me about how we should make a movie where I played a horse girl, and kind of lean into that archetype. When I brought him this idea, he said, I think it’s the same idea.” And that kind of broke everything open. We realized tying in the horse girl to this character helped us figure out her social isolation as an adult.

Netflix releases the Horse Girl trailer starring Alison Brie. In addition to starring, this is Brie’s first foray into writing. Horse Girl is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next week before debuting on the streaming service next month.

Here at GamesNeighdar—sorry, GamesRadar—we’re always a fan of something that takes a left-turn before Normalsville and just goes and does something we’ve never seen before. Horse Girl, a new Netflix movie starring Alison Brie, takes things to a whole other level.

How do you even begin to talk about Horse Girl? The new Netflix film from director Jeff Baena, co-written by Baena and star Alison Brie, dares you to classify it. It exists in its own little world, blending genres with surprisingly strong results. What starts off seeming like a quirky rom-com quickly morphs into something far more disturbing, and strange.

Sarah starts to struggle to separate her dreams from real life, and tells a doctor: “People always said that my grandma was so crazy. Horse girls of the 2000s are all grown up now, and have been dominating Twitter. The trailer (which you can watch above) starts off as a normal rom-com and rapidly turns into a twisting conspiracy complete with horses and alien abductions – and it only gets stranger from there.

Beth Morgan, who does the costumes for Glow, was our costume designer. The thing about Sarah’s wardrobe is that we were trying to tap into a quintessential horse-girl look, but dated. That reflects how she used to have money and be able to ride horses and have familial support from her stepdad, but she doesn’t really have that anymore. It was about her place in society; she’s a bit of a time capsule, because her life hasn’t changed much since her adolescence, and since she experienced certain traumas. As far as the hair, the fantasy initially was that I’d have very long hair, because it’s a horse-girl trope. But we didn’t have money in the budget for a great wig.

It’s difficult for us to predict what’s coming in Horse Girl, because it’s basically a one-man show behind the scenes, as Jeff Baena is credited as this film’s writer, director and main producer. Baena created waves with his 2014 horror comedy Life After Beth, where Audrey Plaza played a dead girlfriend who comes back to haunt” her former flame (Dane DeHaan). So his sensibilities as a storyteller are unconventional, and Baena appears to be going all in with Horse Girl.

Sarah, an awkward woman with a fondness for crafts, horses, and supernatural crime shows, finds her increasingly lucid dreams trickling into her waking life. And there are theories that horse girls are a government experiment. 6. Country girls with horses are great but city girls with horses tend to be pretentious. I’m generalizing of course.

Horse Girl is stacked with an all star cast. Debby Ryan, John Reynolds, Molly Shannon, John Ortiz, Paul Reiser, and Jay Duplass will play the characters in Sarah’s life. While their official credits have yet to be listed, the trailer gives a first glimpse at who each actor will be portraying. Shannon plays Sarah’s coworker at the craft shop who acts as a mother figure. Ryan is Sarah’s well-meaning but clearly more social roommate who encourages Sarah to start dating love interest Brian, played by Reynolds. All of these characters witness Sarah’s transformation as the visions begin to take over.

There’s a history of mental illness in Sarah’s family (which Brie based on her own family’s medical history), and it would be very easy to assume Sarah has inherited that instability. But Sarah doesn’t think so. She begins to suspect there’s something grander at work here – something with potential supernatural implications. Horse Girl goes about introducing all of these elements organically. The early portion of the film is quite funny, and the scenes with Sarah and her potential new boyfriend are sweet. And even as Sarah begins to grow confused and paranoid, Horse Girl keeps up the pretext of humor. But before we know it, the tone has shifted considerably, and the film has become much darker, and much more disturbing.

Brie may have more comedic acting credits, but her performance in the Horse Girl trailer and other roles such as Diane Nyugen in BoJack Horseman show that she has an impressive range and is more than capable of doing this story justice. While Horse Girl sounds like the name of a teen flick featuring a girl who falls in love at her horse riding camp, this iteration of the title is much darker. Horse Girl is an intense immersion into the brain of someone suffering from mental illness. Between the talent and fascinating subject matter, the film has the potential to be the next Netflix original hit.

Horse Girl is the upcoming psychological drama with a dash of dark comedy from director Jeff Baena (The Little Hours), and he also co-wrote the script alongside star Alison Brie (GLOW). The actress had a busy day Monday as she promoted the movie with her co-stars at Sundance Film Festival.Horse Girl

Identifying a horse girl is simple. If someone’s life revolves around horses, they are a horse girl. That class mate who always went to pony club during the summer holidays? A horse girl. That friend who’s bedroom is covered in rosettes? A horse girl. That family member who never grew out of their My Little Pony obsession? A horse girl. Gigi Hadid? Leona Lewis? Tina on Bob’s Burgers? All horse girls.

The movie quickly picks up as Sarah begins to experience a series of strangely surreal dreams leading her to question her perception of reality. According to the synopsis, the darkly humorous psychological thriller centers around a woman’s search for the truth.

If you were once a horse girl, the memories of loving horses and all the freedom and adventure they represented seem to magically reappear with just the slightest smell of a horse. It’s the scent of sweat, leather, laughter, occasional tears, and triumph. Of long, hot days in the sun and sore muscles. Of nostalgia. Whether you were fortunate enough to own an actual horse or dreamt you were, whether you rode English or Western, in the ring or on trails, frequently or just every so often, these books will conjure the joys that come with time spent in a saddle.

Molly Shannon and Jay Duplass also star in the film, which is an official selection in the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Golden Globe nominee Alison Brie (“GLOW”) stars and co-wrote the screenplay with director Jeff Baena (“The Little Hours”).

But things potentially turn a corner when her roommate (Debby Ryan) sets up a blind-date situation… which leads to more problems.

Brie portrays Sarah, a shy and lonely young woman who works as an assistant in an arts and crafts store and only really feels comfortable while spending time with her horse. Even worse, those dreams slowly start to infiltrate her daily life, making her experience surreal visions while awake. As Sarah tries to make sense of what’s happening to her she becomes more confused and paranoid, and her grip on reality becomes increasingly weaker.
