New Yorker Paul Simon first burst onto the music scene as half of the popular folk duo Simon & Garfunkel. Paul Simon plans to perform a special pop-up concert at the Fox Theater in Oakland on Aug. 9, ahead of his headlining set at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Aug. 11.
Simon & Garfunkel included eight songs from Simon’s solo career on the set list for their September 19, 1981 Concert in Central Park Five of those were rearranged as duets; Simon performed the other three songs solo. The resulting live album, TV special, and videocassette (later DVD) releases were all major hits.
His 26-song set spanned more than 50 years. A staple of the 1960s folk-rock scene with Garfunkel, Simon explored music from around the world as a solo artist. His band contained guitarists from Nigeria and South Africa, and a classical sextet. His recent work has been his most musically challenging, and his latest release revisits overlooked songs from the past four decades. He’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member for both stages of his career.

In Simon & Garfunkel, the knock on Simon was that he wasn’t as good-looking or as charismatic as Art Garfunkel. But when set free to do whatever the hell he wanted, Simon was a star.
Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the rock era. Rising to fame in the mid-’60s, Simon’s songs were mature and literate, but also melodically engaging, and spoke to the concerns and uncertainties of a generation.
As the 1960s gave way to the ’70s and ’80s, Simon’s work tended to focus on the personal rather than the larger world, but he also expanded his musical palette, and helped introduce many rock and pop fans to world music.

He is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame, a recipient of their Johnny Mercer Award and is in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist. His song “Mrs. Robinson” from the motion picture “The Graduate” was named in the top ten of The American Film Institute’s 100 Years 100 Songs.

Even now, among younger generations that learned about his music from family car trips, Wes Anderson soundtracks, and Vampire Weekend albums, Paul Simon and Graceland are flashpoints in an ongoing debate about colonialism and cultural appropriation. Most damning of all are the bevy of accusations from less-famous collaborators, during Graceland but also from decades earlier, who say that Simon lifted their ideas without giving proper credit, or a share of his precious publishing royalties.
Simon continued to tour, performing with Garfunkel again as well as numerous other collaborators. In 2014, he embarked on a yearlong world tour with Sting , with whom he’d become friends after living in the same New York City apartment building in the late 1980s. Two years later, he wrote and performed the theme song for Louis C.K. ‘s show Horace and Pete, and appeared in the final episode.

So Hearts and Bones is the last chapter in his life-story of Simon writing the way he always wrote – with voice and guitar. And let’s face it – few people in history have done more with voice and a guitar than this guy.

But after they received some notoriety as Tom & Jerry in the late ’50s, Simon negotiated a side deal with their record label to put out his own single under the name True Taylor. This betrayal” by Simon marked the first fissure in his relationship with Garfunkel, who brought it up time and again for decades afterward. Tom & Jerry eventually broke up, and Simon and Garfunkel didn’t reconnect for several years.

But music does not exist solely on paper. It also resides in the heart and the hips, and Graceland moves both. It’s an impossible album not to love until you learn its back story. Then it becomes impossible to love without caveats.
All that said, Paul Simon has just made a new album. In the Blue Light is a brilliant reimagining of 10 songs he says he’s always wanted to revisit. He created this record with a band of inventive jazz and classical musicians, including guitarist Bill Frisell and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis , with arrangements from The National ‘s Bryce Dessner.
