Once “Hustlin'” caught the ear of a few executives within the national industry, a bidding war ensued that included offers from Bad Boy CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs and The Inc (formerly Murder Inc) president Irv Gotti.

RICK ROSSRapper, entrepreneur and record executive Rick Ross is nothing less than a hip-hop icon. If we left her in a Wingstop restaurant with two other people, they would be able to run it for a full day. With my haircare line, RICH Haircare , I allow her to be in the conference calls and to sit in on the meetings. At the same time, she gets to live and enjoy life much more than I did at her age. You have to take the good with the bad, but I most definitely let them see firsthand what hard work is.

He’s garnered significant controversy through the years, in part because of time spent as a corrections officer. And he’s made headlines by feuding with rapper 50 Cent. His 2006 platinum debut album Port of Miami contained the debut smash record Hustlin’” and got to #1 on the Billboard charts. Since then, Ross has continued to release top-selling albums.

Case in point: Thirteen years after the original, Ross released a sequel to his debut album, naming his latest record Port of Miami 2. With a title like that, we might expect the rapper to deliver a proper followup to the record that made his name. What we get instead is an enormous missed opportunity. Port of Miami 2 is an intensely mediocre mainstream rap album with enough shreds pointing to what could have been to make it even more disappointing.

The House of Blues was at capacity as fans pressed against each other and the stage while Ross paced back and forth before the ever-changing screen. Images of Miami, a young Ross, music videos, and MMG logos illuminated the room as Ross lead the crowd in call and response hooks from his albums.

In the same year, Ross launched Maybach Music Group (MMG). The label would achieve great success, releasing albums by Meek Mill, Wale and Omarion. Appearances by Ross and his signings on other artists’ tracks would almost always be accompanied by a “Maybach Music” drop — a vocal tagline by the supermodel Jessica Gomes.

A fairly traditional Struggle-to-Triumph story, Hold Me Back was a welcome reminder of Rick Ross’ roots and undoubtedly served as an inspiration to the millions of people still struggling through life. With its gnarly rhythms and one-two-punch of the lyrics, it established itself as an anthem for the young and disenfranchised.

The track comes off Ross’ recent album Port of Miami 2 , his 10th album. The album is a follow-up to his 2017 release Rather You Than Me and was named after his 2006 debut studio album, Port of Miami. The 15-song set features a ton of collaborators, including Meek Mill, the late Nipsey Hussle, Drake, Swizz Beatz, Wale, Teyana Taylor, Jeezy, A Boogie With Da Hoodie and Denzel Curry, with Fascinated” being one of the only tracks that doesn’t have a guest feature.

Rick Ross: I would never be nervous at the idea of my fans getting to know me, and I feel like if they really knew who I was, they wouldn’t even believe me. The book paints some pictures for you but can never really give you an idea of what the real play was, because I came up in the era of some real things happening. Neil Martinez-Belkin did a great job of putting the book together. He spoke to maybe sixty or seventy of my closest friends and family, because talking to me there’s only some much conversation I’m going to give you. The shit I’ve seen, when we talked, it got no realer. When I talked about getting real money it got no realer. That’s what made me the businessman I am. Unlike a lot of other artists, I was familiar with money before the music came. Most artists, by the time they get their first advance, they got to go get a car or a home. I already had these things, so by the time I got money in the music business I was ready to invest in other things and do other things.

At the start of 2013, he announced details of his sixth studio album. He enlisted the help of Scott Storch and DJ Khaled as executive producers and released the pre-album single “No Games” featuring Future. The album, titled Mastermind, landed in March of 2014 with the simultaneous release of the single “War Ready” featuring Young Jeezy. Just six months later, Ross announced that he would be releasing his seventh studio album, Hood Billionaire, toward the end of 2014. The album arrived in November of that year and was preceded by the singles “Elvis Presley Blvd.” and “Keep Doin’ That (Rich Bitch).” In 2015, he dropped Black Dollar, a high-profile official mixtape that featured production from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Jake One. The mixtape previewed that year’s official album, Black Market, which landed late in the year, along with the accompanying single “Sorry” featuring Chris Brown. Future, Mary J. Blige, and Nas also made guest appearances on the LP.

In 2006, Ross’ first single Hustlin’” became a chart-topping hit and launched him to fame. Since then all nine of his albums have landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, including five No. 1 debuts. In 2009 he founded his own record label, Maybach Music Group, which is home to artists Meek Mill, Wale and Gunplay. In 2018 he unveiled RICH by Rick Ross, a collection of luxury grooming products. His tenth album, Port of Miami II, is slated for release in 2019.

Rick Ross: As painful as it is to watch this type of s online (referring to surveillance video footage of the shooting), that’s what I grew up seeing. As painful as it is, I almost became numb to it over the years. I’ve always been the one that’s been the shoulder for others to cry on. Why did it happen? I can’t answer that. Was he a special individual? An incredibly special individual! Would I still consider Nipsey Hussle blessed and highly favored? Yes, I would. I’ve stood in those shoes before, and I was blessed to walk away. But for some reason, if it was sic to happen to me and that’s how the Big Homie upstairs chose for me to go, I’m going to open my arms to Him. I don’t fear death, personally. I’m sure if Nipsey was here, Nipsey would still love and support his community the same way. Would Nipsey still love flossing in Crenshaw? I believe so. I would still love Miami 305, even if that was the city that took my life.

The memoir, Hurricanes: My Life Is A Movie, is set to talk about his struggles growing up in the 1980s in the crime-ridden neighborhood of Carol City in Miami Gardens, Fla., and more. Most would speculate Ross, born William Leonard Roberts II, has lived a pretty interesting life.

Almost 13 years to this day, Rick Ross, then a little-known Florida rapper with mafioso dreams and a hustler’s ambition, dropped his debut album, Port of Miami. Here was a hulking, unapologetic drug kingpin espousing bossisms via anthems like Hustlin’” and Blow.” Who the fck you think you fckin’ with? I’m the fckin’ boss!” he proclaimed on the former. He said it with such conviction that it didn’t matter if you’d never heard of him before; you believed it.

Sporting a regal makeup, Ross puts his irrepressible twist on the Way Of Wade 7. The high-performance basketball shoe interprets Ross’s biggest boss” ethos in an entirely different fashion, combining a black base with opulent gold and regal purple detailing. The signature embellishment is a removable black crown that wraps around the heel, uncovering a Self Made” text hit when it’s removed. Each pair features a unique number on the heel collar, with the shoe’s run limited to only 500 pairs. Branded details on the tongue, heel tab and toebox finalize the motif.

While it pales in comparison to catalog highlights such as the aforementioned Teflon Don, Rather You Than Me and 2009’s Deeper Than Rap, Port of Miami 2 isn’t without its bright spots altogether. Turnpike Ike” is a new example of how new age boom-bap resurrector Jake One brings a grit that challenges Ross as a rapper, much like when they previously combined forces with Dr. Dre and Jay Z on 2012’s 3 Kings.” On an even more nostalgic note, composers J.U.S.T.I.C.E League make their return to the Maybach Music Group fold on Vegas Residency,” as a typically swollen arrangement of live strings, guitar and piano that brings one of the best performances out of Ross, a temporary reminder of his advanced capabilities when he achieves perfect synergy with familial producers.

After 10 studio albums, the Grammy-nominated rapper became a published author with the September 2019 release of Hurricanes: A Memoir. The autobiography delved into Ross’ upbringing and career on both sides of the law, as well as the headline-grabbing moments like the seizures that nearly killed him in 2011 and the attempt on his life via drive-by shooting in 2013.

In January 2009, Ross started a feud with rapper 50 Cent because he supposedly looked at him the wrong way at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2008. 50 Cent told news sources that he did not remember seeing Ross there. 89 In late January, “Mafia Music”, by Ross, leaked onto the Internet. There were several lines that seemed to diss 50 Cent. Days later, 50 Cent released “Officer Ricky (Go Head, Try Me)” in response to Ross’s disparaging remarks on his “Mafia Music” song.

Rapper and hip-hop mogul Rick Ross made headlines last year after seizures drove him to the hospital, leading to reports that his health was imperiled. In an upcoming memoir, Ross opens up about his life and how abuse of codeine caused the seizures.

Rick Ross: The disadvantage my children have is that they’re my kids, and my entire family is in a different position. They’re receiving money from everybody. I could put my kids on an allowance, but my daughters have credit cards. I do explain the importance and the value of building a brand. I don’t speak to my daughter about coming up from the mud to the marble and starting with nothing, because that’s not her life. She’s not in the position me and my sisters were in. Instead, I talk to her about the importance of maintaining our brands and bringing something new to the brand. By the time she was fourteen, my daughter knew how to run a Wingstop (one of Ross’ several business interests).RICK ROSS

Box Chevy was released in early 2013 in order to stir up anticipation for his forthcoming sixth studio album MasterMind. However, when the album dropped a year later — debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 with sales exceeding 179,000 in the first week — the single was left out of the album. Perhaps because the song had already been a fixture in radios for over a year.

Given the stigma that hip hop has and the lyrics that are spoken, knowing Rick Ross’ was a former correctional officer wouldn’t have been great for his reputation. Ross’ commentary has been quoted within publications such as Time Magazine, People, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe and theWashington Post.

A week after the lawsuit was filed, Rick Ross responded to the charges: “It’s like owning a restaurant, you’re gonna have a few slip and falls. You get lawsuits, you deal with them, and get them out your way…sometimes you lose.” 70 He denied rumors that he would change his name to “Ricky Rozay” as a consequence of the lawsuit. The lawsuit was thrown out of court on July 3, 2010. 71 72 The album Teflon Don was released as scheduled on July 20, 2010.

After being signed to Suave House Records, former label for rap duo 8Ball & MJG, he eventually signed a deal with Slip-n-Slide Records, which has been under the Def Jam label since 2006. This was the year Ross released his first album, Port of Miami.

In 2019, Rick Ross is slated to release his 10th studio album, a follow-up to his debut album, tentatively named ‘Port of Miami 2: Born to Kill’. In anticipation of his upcoming release, we have compiled a list of Rick Ross’ 10 best songs for you to reckon with his formidable legacy.

Rick Ross’ debut single, Hustlin’ was the single that launched a multi-million dollar bidding war between the hip hop industry’s three most prominent record labels. Packed with references to drug lords and kingpins, it sounds and feels like a piece of crime fiction.

And while his core fans already were familiar with the superlatives or Rick Ross the artist, in 2009, we got to know how strong of man the music Kingpin was. Highly publicized rap battles and controversy over his street cred that started at the end of 2008, none of it mattered by the spring of the next year when 2009’s Deeper Than Rap dropped. The few that ridiculed had no choice but to jump on the bandwagon, when Ross elevated himself with refined raps and musical soundscapes, all the while never worrying about public misperceptions about his past. While other albums may have sold slightly more, 2010’s Teflon Don overshadowed every LP from any genre that year. It was the album you heard coming out every car, the album that dominated DJ’s playlist and the album that catapulted Ross to international superstardom.

In November 2010, rapper and frequent collaborator, Diddy , who in 2009 signed Ross to a management deal with his Ciroc Entertainment , announced from his YouTube account, that he and Ross are working on an EP together. A single was released for the project, called “Another One”. 24 Ross ended 2010 by releasing another mixtape, Ashes To Ashes on Christmas Eve 2010.

When performing, the boss of Miami trades his unassailable cool for shouting and sweat. Stalking the stage in sunglasses, Ross performs hit after hit, touching on solo tunes like “Hustlin'” and “B.M.F.,” which helped transform modern hip-hop, to the collabs he’s done with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, French Montana, Ace Hood and Skrillex. A rap superstar, Rick Ross has performed at Rolling Loud, Wireless Festival, Made in America, OVO Fest and at gigs across Europe and Africa. In 2011 he toured as part of Lil Wayne’s I Am Music II tour and in 2019 headlined his own Port of Miami 2 tour.
