The first Rocketman trailer was released in November The clip suggests that the film promises to be a life-spanning examination of Elton’s life, including glimpses into his childhood as well as early career.
rocketman lyrics wife or life – Rocketman Movie Review & Film Summary (2019)
Comparisons to Bohemian Rhapsody” are inevitable. A movie that features Elton John seeing himself as a child in the bottom of a pool when he ODs and sings the song Rocket Man” at him somehow feels more truthful than anything I got out of Bohemian Rhapsody, and that is saying a lot. Do I think that Rocketman deserves Best Picture at the Academy Awards? To be honest, yes, I do. When I started to make this claim back in May, I wasn’t sure what other movies were coming our way, but now, at the end of the year, it is very clear that Rocketman deserves all our love and praise.
The comparisons to Bohemian Rhapsody” are inevitable. Set in the same early-1970s to late-1980s era, both movies feature sons who have their musical interests and signs of genius discounted. One day, Young Elton (then named the far less sexy Reginald Dwight) meets a fellow musician to partner with, lyricist Bernie Taupin, who is still his main collaborator This coming-of-age story, complete with a series of challenges posed by drugs and a meddlesome lover-turned-manager, is quite similar to the story of Queen frontman Freddy Mercury. In the end, rock bottom is found, the artist has a call to sobriety, and the film ends with a triumphant recreation of a seminal career moment.
Rocketman traces John’s life from his early days as a prodigy through his spiraling career and partnership with Bernie Taupin to his self-destruction all the way to the beginning of his journey to redemption. This movie is the result of almost two decades of development, including switching studios and attached talent and what we get could not be more satisfying.
John Reid is one of the key figures who helped Elton John along in the earliest days of his career. One of his most impactful contributions that helped to set the singer apart from other acts of the time were the extravagant and flamboyant outfits Reid encouraged him to wear during his performances. Their professional partnership began when record label Dick James Music decided they needed to appoint a full-time agent to their burgeoning star. Everyone was surprised to find that when Elton named Reid for the position, the two were already living together.
And yet … and yet. Egerton gives a performance with such thrills and vulnerability, such charisma and pathos, that it’s hard not to be wowed. Previously best known for his starring role in the action-comedy Kingsman” movies, Egerton truly gives it his all – you can see the effort on display here in what was clearly a physically and emotionally arduous role. That includes doing all his own singing, which adds an element of accessibility that, say, Bohemian Rhapsody ” lacks (and we’ll get to all the inevitable comparisons in a moment). He doesn’t look or sound exactly like John, and that’s probably preferable to doing a straight-up impression. He gets the vibe right and he has a genuine, appealing screen presence. It is almost enough in itself – but it’s also enough to make you wish the film surrounding him were as brash and gutsy.
Star Taron Egerton delivers career-best work here, mustering all the bluster and bravado (and crooning prowess) one expects from a secretly wounded pop star. And while Rocketman can become too engorged on its own spectacle, it’s still a blast-off of an experience that is equal parts rousing and moving.
I loved Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born so I thought I would like this. Hated it. Nearly every minute of it. Didn’t like the weird musical numbers. Didn’t like young Elton. Didn’t like how they changed the songs. Didn’t like the order of the songs. There was no rise to stardom moments. There was no interaction with other rock star moments. Two or three times in the movie they mention other rock stars are at a gig or party but there are no scenes with them. This left me feeling short changed. I’m going to put my Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy record on the turn table just to regain my love for Elton’s music. I need to forget this movie asap.
Rocketman, the musical fantasy,” as it was billed, about Elton John’s early career and struggles with addiction and sexuality, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May —which might as well have been last century in award voters’ recency-biased minds. When factoring in rehearsals, filming, recording the soundtrack at Abbey Road, and spending time living with and getting to know the icon and his husband, David Furnish, the last three years of Egerton’s life have been spent in the headspace of Elton John.
Yes, and we’ve actually heard him sing an Elton John classic before. In 2016, Egerton was part of the voice cast of animated movie Sing, where his character, Johnny the monkey, performed I’m Still Standing. However, The Guardian criticised the film’s by-the-numbers approach”, stating: Taron Egerton gamely does a middleweight impersonation, more comfortable with the lighter side: better at the tiaras than the tantrums”.
McKoy has a point when he says that death is great for an artist’s back catalog. When Chester Bennington of Linkin Park died in 2017, Variety reported that streams of the group’s music experienced a 7,000% spike the very next day. When Chuck Berry died that same year, streams of his music increased by 9,000% , even though he had last released a new album in 1979. Queen’s Freddie Mercury has been gone since 1991, but his death nevertheless added poignancy to “Bohemian Rhapsody” that may have made viewers want to re-connect with the music.
Egerton and Fletcher have a history with each other, with John and with musical projects, which is why Rocketman is something of a perfect storm. The pair worked together on Eddie the Eagle, Egerton performed John’s I’m Still Standing in Dreamworks’ Sing, and Fletcher directed Sunshine on Leith, the superb musical drama using the music of The Proclaimers. It’s clear that the pair have something, or ignite something in each other, that is intoxicating and seems so natural. Additionally, Egerton and John appeared together in Kingsman: The Golden Circle which was also produced by Marv Films, the same company behind this and the Kingsman movies as well as Fletcher’s Eddie the Eagle. All roads have led to Rocketman, and this destination is worth every second of that journey.
If “Bohemian Rhapsody” is anything to go by, Elton John’s catalog is about to enjoy a new lease on life. The 2018 movie about the rock band Queen grossed $51 million in its opening weekend and went on to earn $687 million at the worldwide box office, sending the band’s music back to the top of the charts for the first time in decade.
Primarily known for his role as Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin in Kingsman and as the voice of Johnny in the animated musical Sing, Taron Egerton will be playing the role of Elton John in Rocketman. The pair already worked together once, when the singer made a cameo appearance in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
The expected moments of breakthrough and excess follow in John’s meteoric rise. The main thread throughout, at least theoretically, is his undying friendship with lyricist Bernie Taupin, a relationship that outlasts all others. There’s not as much of Jamie Bell’s Bernie as there should be, but if anyone takes up the slack, it’s Madden, who sexily menaces the screen in every scene he’s in.
One of the purposes of a musical is to sell soundtracks; viewers who enjoy this movie may be interested. John’s success is often depicted in material terms: fancy clothes, a palatial house, shoes and clothes galore. Elton John and Taron Egerton took the stage at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles to perform a couple of songs from Rocketman following a screening.
It’s safe to say that not much of what we see onscreen in Rocketman” bears much resemblance to what happened in real life, but it’s not supposed to — taking a cue from a guy who embraced fantasy and escape in albums like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy,” it whips up a fantasia in which The Bitch Is Back” becomes a childhood neighborhood singalong and Tiny Dancer” expresses Elton’s anger at his writing partner, Bernie Taupin, going off to get laid at a party.
Bluesology gets hired to play for Black soul acts who are touring the UK. During one such tour, a Black band member kisses Elton, only to rudely out him later on in front of a group that includes Elton’s friend and frequent collaborator Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell). This negative incident feels evened out, however, by the positive way bandleader Wilson (Jason Pennycooke) sagely gives Elton advice on life. In both cases, Rocketman generally avoids cliches about Black musicians.
He didn’t see the final version until its Cannes premiere in May. There, one scene that touched him most was when John’s longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell) visits him in rehab. It took 12 years of development for Elton John to get “Rocketman” made and he couldn’t be happier with the result.
I loved how the songs were integrated in the film. The fame and sparkly glitter can’t hide open wounds. There’s a scene that’s almost plucked straight out of Bob Fosse’s ‘All That Jazz’, where Elton is carried off in an ambulance after he attempts suicide, but thrown back into a stadium like a wild animal. I found it incredibly devastating how he pretends to be happy when performing on stage while being dead inside. I also noticed the lyrics had been changed to “I miss my LIFE” from “I miss my wife”. How one word can change the meaning and perspective of the song.
In this edition, Rocketman production designer Marcus Rowland explained how he turned part of London into a 1970s Los Angeles setting for the Elton John biopic. Rocketman hits theaters on May 31 and is expected to open at around $20 million during its first weekend as Godzilla: King of the Monsters presumably tops the musical. We go behind the scenes of Rocketman to learn about the movie’s elaborate costumes and how Elton John’s songs were remixed into a musical.
