Midway through his set, Hunt hunkered down with an acoustic guitar to explain the evolution of his sound, maybe justifying himself at greater length than necessary for a guy with the biggest country song of 2017.

SAM HUNTMerch designs for country artist, Sam Hunt. Hunt earned four No. 1 hits from his first album, including “House Party” and “Take Your Time.” He topped the charts again in 2017 with “Body Like a Back Road,” then waited a full year to drop his one-off single, “Downtown’s Dead.” Between writing songs and savoring married life with his spouse Hannah, with whom he tied the knot in 2017 , Hunt has mostly kept a low profile.

The songs that the Sam Hunt-types sing are popular because it is what we want – simple, sweet and understandable. But it’s not what life always is, which is messy and complicated. Artists literally have the stage and the opportunity to use that spotlight to talk about important issues. I wish Hunt would have picked one passion topic – other than his wife – on which to shine a spotlight.

It made for a sharp contrast with Hunt’s previous performance at this festival, in 2016, when he brought out Snoop Dogg, G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha (well before Rexha became an unlikely country star herself thanks to her Meant to Be” collaboration with Florida Georgia Line).

Lynyrd Skynyrd performs on the Palomino Stage at Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif. on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Hailing from rural Cedartown, Georgia, Sam Hunt is quickly establishing a name for himself and becoming one of Nashville’s most talked about young talents.

Hunt did have warm, practiced vocals and his live performance is more impressive than his recorded albums, which couldn’t be said for every performer earlier in the day. There are two main differences between Hunt’s live performance and his recordings. The first, is the impressive well-rounded strength of is voice and the second, spontaneous, yet clean, guitar solos.

Initially, Sam Hunt didn’t plan to sing for a living. A native of Cedartown, Georgia, Hunt excelled at sports, specializing in football. His time as a high-school quarterback was acclaimed – he earned a nomination for Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy – and upon graduation, he enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University in 2003. Hunt didn’t play much in either the 2003 or 2004 seasons, so he transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005, where he graduated in 2007. During his time at UAB, Hunt began to teach himself how to play guitar and sing, so when his 2008 tryout for the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t go anywhere, he decided to head to Nashville to pursue a career in music.

Fans wait for Lynyrd Skynyrd to come onto the Palomino Stage at the Stagecoach country music festival, Indio, Calif., April 27, 2019. 1) Sam Hunt’s favorite music includes gospel-based Southern R&B— which also serves as a big inspiration.

But a closer look instantly reveals that there is nothing typical about the music that Hunt makes, nor about the way he has introduced his work to the world. In a short time and on his own terms, he has become one of Nashville’s most hotly anticipated new artists, and his debut album, Montevallo, delivers on the buzz and the promise—and then some.

In fact, Hunt fell back on country after his career as a UAB quarterback didn’t lead to the NFL, and you can see traces of his athleticism and maybe even his on-field footwork in the way the singer bounded across the State Fair Grandstand stage last night like he was looking for an open man. On his 2014 debut, Montevallo, Hunt integrated the seductive vocal grain of contemporary R&B into a rhythmically spruced up radio-friendly country that adapted the beatwise lessons mainstream pop had learned from hip-hop and electronic dance music without being too pushy about it.

Chris Janson nets his third Hot Country Songs top 10 as “Good Vibes” vaults 13-8. It rises 4-2 on Country Airplay, up 10% to 36.4 million in radio reach, while drawing gains of 19% to 4.7 million U.S. streams and 7% to 2,000 sold.

Midway through his set, Hunt hunkered down with an acoustic guitar to explain the evolution of his sound, maybe justifying himself at greater length than necessary for a guy with the biggest country song of 2017. (We’ll get to that.) He sang bits of old Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt songs as he talked about listening exclusively to country radio as a kid (I couldn’t tell you the difference between Nirvana and Madonna”), then he gave us his take on Usher and R Kelly, the music he encountered in his teens.

Hunt was a genial onstage presence introducing Cop Car” (a Hunt co-write that Keith Urban originally recorded) as a true story about the time he and the woman he married this April crept through a gap in a fence to watch planes take off on an Alabama runway and wound up in police custody. (I’ve always had a knack for getting myself in troublesome situations.”) And there were little surprises: During House Party,” which has that bom-bom-BOM, BOM-bom-bom rhythm beloved of rocking” boy bands like Hot Chelle Rae , one of Hunt’s guitarists slid the chorus melody from One Nation Under a Groove” into his solo.

Sam Hunt is back on country radio with his new song Kinfolks” but he seemed to disappear in the last year on social media. He’s been writing songs, along with playing a couple of shows. Thousands watch Sam Hunt perform at the Stagecoach country music festival, Indio, Calif., April 27, 2019.

Hunt grew up in rural Cedartown, Georgia. An athlete all his life, Hunt wound up playing football through college, ending his time there as starting quarterback at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Somewhere during his time at UAB, he picked up a guitar, and while learning the songs of such great singer-songwriters as Townes Van Zandt and John Prine, Hunt began putting rudimentary chords together and writing tunes of his own.

Sam and Hannah’s love story was nearly a decade in the making; they’ve been together, off and on, since around 2008. In 2014, Sam put out his Grammy-nominated debut studio album, Montevallo, named for Hannah’s hometown in Alabama.

It’s been FIVE years since Sam Hunt released his Montevallo album, sending him on a trajectory to superstardom rarely seen. A lightning rod for debate, Sam clearly is not a fan of the spotlight. He’s a normal guy. He got married. He needed time away.

Hunt has only released music sporadically since his 2014 album Montevallo turned him into a major star. In early 2017, he shared the confessional single Drinkin’ too Much,” which he followed with the record-breaking Body Like a Back Road.” In 2018, he took a turn back toward brooding with Downtown’s Dead ,” though it wasn’t a massive radio hit. In the meantime, he’s stayed busy playing festivals, including a headlining gig at Stagecoach 2019.

Meanwhile, Lynyrd Skynyrd became the new record holder for crowd at the Palomino Stage, with fans spilling out of the tent for tens of yards in every direction. The band even outdrew its 2014 audience at the same location. Part of the attraction could be that it’s a last chance to see Southern rock’s defining band, as a long farewell tour wraps this year. And unlike many Palomino players, Lynyrd Skynyrd held the crowd’s attention for the full set.

Sam Hunt has announced a brand-new song, Kinfolks,” written by Hunt with longtime collaborators Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers and Josh Osborne. Fans sing along as Jessie James Decker performs on the Mane Stage at Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif. on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

Hunt had an energetic, if unsurprising, start to his set. He is, after all, another white male headliner with a baseball cap and beard. He kicked off the set with Leave The Night On,” and that’s a great pun, but the song could have been replaced with any other formulaic party love song I heard today and I wouldn’t have noticed.

The Georgia native wiped his ‘gram clean last week and took a page from from Taylor Swift and posted a singular picture as a way to ramp up to releasing new music. Hunt released ‘Kinfolks’ on October 10th.

Before performing her first single, My Mistake,” she told the crowd that the New York Times once called the song sex positive,” which she took as a compliment. However, …when women sing about sex it’s like a statement, but when a man sings about sex it’s just another Friday night,” she told the crowd.
