Sam Smith is an English-born singer-songwriter. Smith was born on May 19, 1992, in London. A natural singer, Smith began performing as a child, but the first real press they got came in 2009, when their mother, a successful banker, was fired after allegedly promoting her 15-year-old son’s singing career while on company time. Smith had only recorded two songs at that point and it would be a few years before they left their mark on the musical world.
Yeah, I’m working with a couple of young artists; one of them doesn’t even have music out yet. She and I are speaking very politically in the songs that we’re putting together for her album. Because you know, it’s going to take 16-year-olds to have the fing guts to do this. In a lot of stuff that I’ve done with Bea Miller, we are speaking politically; even if it’s just a couple of lines here and there, we’re still doing the damn thing. A lot of that stuff that I’m in the process of developing is very political, including a TV project that is about my life as a teenager in the ‘90s, using the parallel of the homophobia and femmephobia that I experienced then and how that is all happening again — but this time, it’s coming from the highest offices.
That dark place has taken Smith to some very exciting, rewarding arenas. At the 2015 Grammy Awards, Smith and their record took four awards: Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (Stay With Me”).
IN THE LONELY HOUR” was a little more than a half-hour crying jag about longing for a man — a straight, married one he was in love with whom he never so much as kissed. Nearly every song was about this: Stay With Me,” the sad song about wanting a man to stay even when it’s clear he’s not in love; Good Thing,” the sad song about deciding that he’s stayed too long waiting around — that one begins with a vision of him getting mugged outside the man’s door and dying in his arms like Éponine. And, on the deluxe edition of the album, a cover of Whitney Houston‘s How Will I Know?” which was not a sad song until he sang it.

Sam Smith was a powerhouse last night at MSG. I have been in the music business for quite some time now and I can honestly say I have never been witness to such pure talent on stage. His vocal performance put shame to whats been recorded and his band behind him was a driving force unmatched. From start to finish it was a mesmerizing experience, and might I add, Disclosure showing up was a pleasant surprise. I look forward to what might be next for Mr. Smith and how he may plan to grace the music industry in the future.
