Speaking English, Dutch and splattering her speech with her parent’s Jamaican patois, Steff has the effortless ability to inhabit many worlds, offering a genuine, authentic global perspective through her music. Women in grime usually position themselves as relatable and down to earth, so it’s easy to see why Stefflon stood out on the scene early on, smashing through this tradition with the kind of swagger usually reserved for only the most bawdy of gangster rappers. The cover for SECURE directly acknowledges this, paying homage to the cover of Lil’ Kim’s most provocative album, The Notorious K.I.M., released way back in 2000. After the artwork leaked, the XXL Freshman revealed on Instagram that she wouldn’t be as fearless” without Lil’ Kim, and it’s easy to see how Stefflon draws inspiration from the legendary rapper with those husky tones and unapologetic stance on sexuality.

I’m so happy, I’ve been waiting for the day that the Barbz place their foot on Stefflon Don’s Water Buffalo built ass neck. She’s always sneak dissing Nicki thinking she’s low. Steff is currently working on her debut mixtape, Real Ting, which will feature Jeremih and Scouse Trappin Tremz.
By the time she clocks off it’s close to 7pm. She has been through so many outfit changes, hair alterations and general re-upholsterings, she has lost count. These things are way more exhausting than they look. And still, when she walks into The Ivy in civilian garb, the entire place turns around to look at her, like: ‘Who the f is that?’ Bright pink hair. Fierce blue talons. Star-spangled Chanel shades. Curves spilling out of a powder-blue tracksuit that she designed. Even if not that many people recognise her yet, there is simply no mistaking Ms Stephanie Allen, 26, for anything other than a massive star. I get the impression she’d be just like this if she were pushing a trolley around the supermarket or dropping off her kid at school.
Her family members were all full of music as her father used to play reggae and dancehall when her mother would bring blank CDs to replicate the charts on MTV — ‘Destiny’s Child, Eve, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott… so many bangers’ and everyone would rap and sing.
