But what’s perhaps most impressive about their ascension to the heights of pop stardom is the strategic manner in which they’ve arrived there: in the five years since the Chainsmokers came onto the music scene, they’ve continually showcased an almost laser-like ability to take listeners on an enclosed emotional journey, typically within the four or so minutes of each of their songs. In listening to some of their most-popular songs, including the Halsey-featuring Closer,” the Bebe Rexha-featuring Call You Mine” and more recently, Who Do You Love” featuring 5 Seconds of Summer, an emotional guest vocal nearly always bobs and weaves between the duo’s anthemic, club-ready production. To that end, as much as you want to fight the pull, you can’t help but listen to these songs and feel as if somehow the Chainsmokers have cracked a secret pop-music formula whereby tender emotion and intense, ecstatic production are harmoniously intertwined.

Commercially speaking, such an adjustment might not be necessary. People are still gobbling up whatever the Chainsmokers are cooking. There’s no telling how long they could keep releasing variations on the same song and getting richly rewarded for it. But even the most resilient metabolism can only gorge on the same garbage for so long before suffering the consequences. Perhaps if they don’t update the menu soon even Taggart and Pall are going to puke.

Its members are Alexander Pall and Drew Taggart. Taggart grew up in a small town on the coast of Maine (USA). He was a scholarly teen who founded an investment club for his fellow students to learn about handling money and taxes. Pall is the son of a New York art dealer; he spent his teen years throwing parties.

All Halsey’s vocals apart from her hook vocals further down have tons of plug-ins and sends! The insert chain on these tracks is Auto-Tune, Waves Renaissance De-essser, Waves SSL Channel, Waves RVox, Waves RDe-esser and SPL Vitalizer, and on two tracks I add the Waves RVerb, and on the ‘Delay Chop’, which happens just one moment towards the end, the Valhalla Vintage Verb. Each of Halsey’s vocals here is EQ’ed slightly differently, and also the same with the de-essers. The first in the chain usually works as a normal de-esser, and the second functions more as corrective EQ. They each have different frequencies that they act on, with different thresholds and amounts, and they tend to correct small issues in just one word or so. It may be a harsh upper-mid thing, which female vocals can have, and I just carve out those frequencies with the RDe-esser. I don’t want to take it out of the entire performance, because that frequency may add energy to the overall vocals.

Sometimes, the gizmos and gadgets distracted from the music. But for the most part, the group let the production take over during instrumental breaks where the music could serve as a soundtrack. As photos and videos from the first show of The Chainsmokers’ tour started surfacing online, TOP fans quickly noticed and called them out for the similarities.

Just days before surprising fans at the Chainsmokers concert, Ballerini also surprised an intimate crowd gathered at the Listening Room in Nashville when she turned up to perform a few selections with some of her fellow songwriters.

PALL: Thanks to Instagram, I can tell you exactly what it is. From what I see on social media, it’s becoming more international, which is really exciting for us. We’re seeing places like the Philippines and South Africa. It seems like we’re reaching the 16 to 25 demographic. It’s pretty split between boys and girls if I had to guess. What’s really cool for us is when we see messages from people like, Hey, my daughter’s six years old and she loves your songs,” and they send a video of them singing it. Or even my mom walked into the room humming Roses,” which is really cool because it shows that our music is transcending age in general. We make music for ourselves, and it’s really exciting that everyone else is enjoying it enough that they find some emotional connection to it. It’s safe to say Pall and his Chainsmokers cohort, Drew Taggart, have made good on that goal. The Chainsmokers’ songs have been streamed upwards of 5 billion times and, according to Forbes 2019 annual list of the highest-paid celebrities, this year the duo dethroned Calvin Harris as the best-compensated DJs on the planet.

The only part of the concert that I thoroughly enjoyed was when 5 Seconds of Summer came on stage to perform Who Do You Love,” that one song you heard on top-40 radio stations at least three times a day over the summer. Unlike The Chainsmokers’ Drew Taggart, who looks like he could’ve been randomly plucked off of Frat Row minutes before the show, Luke Hemmings of 5SOS is an incredible vocalist and frontman. He brought energy to the stage that I desperately desired for the rest of The Chainsmokers’ set.

The Chainsmokers were at their best when cycling through guest vocalists and adjusting their sound to match each collaborator’s strengths. Near the end of the album, they return to that approach and come away with some of their least objectionable tracks in recent memory. Jhene Aiko shows up to apply her airy R&B skill set over staccato synth blurts more lively than almost any other sound on the album before the usual ethereal theatrics kick in. It’s no masterpiece, but it’s the rare Memories song that sounds like the Chainsmokers without sounding like a Chainsmokers retread.

And then there’s the duo’s alarming alignment with bro-country superstars Florida Georgia Line, who, in hindsight, are an even more obvious match for these guys than Coldplay were. It’s not surprising that music’s foremost willfully gauche two-man hit machines would join forces. What is surprising is that they take the opportunity to go full M83. In closing out the album, Last Day Alive” shoots for the stars and at least scrapes the stratosphere, perhaps puncturing the Chainsmokers’ self-imposed bubble along the way. It sounds like drifting off into outer space on a vessel powered by synthesizers, which implies exploration is on the horizon.

Honestly, I didn’t even expect The Chainsmokers’ concert to give off such heavy EDM vibes. Most of their songs that I knew prior to the show just sound like modern pop music, but noises were happening at the concert that I can’t even describe in words.

The Chainsmokers World War Joy Tour is marching toward Connecticut. Alex Pall and Drew Taggart take the stage at Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday, Sept. 28, with special guests 5 Seconds of Summer and Lennon Stella.

PALL: It’s kind of crazy because we literally started in New York and all the little clubs that would have us. Our first show we opened for Timeflies (in 2012) — they sold out Terminal Five. We didn’t sell a single ticket, but it really gave us a taste of what this could potentially be. We were both very ambitious and passionate about this, and I would say there were no steps skipped along the way. We opened up the smallest stages at festivals, starting with TomorrowWorld. At Ultra, Laidback Luke’s wife went into labor and we took his spot on the main stage. So we caught some lucky breaks along the way.

In 2014, up-and-coming EDM duo the Chainsmokers unleashed the “#Selfie” heard round the world. The catchy club anthem was an international sensation, taking the world by storm with its hilarious send-up of self-obsessed internet culture and landing on charts around the globe. With their synth-heavy productions, hilarious stage antics, and party-ready DJ sets, the Chainsmokers have quickly become a must-see live act that fans of adrenaline-filled dance music won’t want to miss on tour.

The greatest number of plug-ins were used on Halsey’s voice, which typically passed through two Waves Renaissance De-essers, a Waves SSL Channel and Renaissance Vox, and the SPL Vitalizer plug-in. The first four vocal tracks are another example of Drew and I working together on the production. We decided that the last hook needed something to build it, so Drew sent me some vocal parts, which I chopped up and treated, again using the SSL Channel and also the Waves TrueVerb plug-in, and this resulted in these airy, spacey vocals you can hear at the end of the song that add a little extra lift. I used the TrueVerb, because the reverbs that I already had in the aux tracks at the bottom of the session didn’t give me what I wanted.

I had a really shitty day leading up to this concert. I didn’t get out of bed until 5 p.m. because mental illness plagues my every move. But nevertheless, I persisted, because I really wanted The Chainsmokers and all their basicness to bring me joy. And given that their tour was named World War Joy, I really thought they could.

Kendrick’s ascent means Bruno Mars‘ That’s What I Like” slides to #3. Kyle and Lil Yachty‘s iSpy” rises to a new peak at #4, which means it’s now Yachty’s best-charting hit. Similarly, Drew’s backing vocals also have these plug-ins, and some Lexicon plate reverb. I’m using the SSL Channel to get rid of some high end on some of the tracks, because they were a little too bright, and had different effects on each of them to make sure they were not too similar.

TAGGART: This is the most ambitious production we’ve ever done. We’re very fortunate to be able to do a second arena tour. The first one, we sort of went nuts with production. But I think now our show has evolved so much over the past two years, and the production we’re bringing out on the World War Joy Tour is really going to speak to the dynamics of our show. It’s going to match the energy of our show. It’s going to complement Alex, myself and Matt as a band, and how we work together and how we work the stage.

Now that the Closer” reenactment project expands to album length, the returns continue to diminish. The pivot is complete: The Chainsmokers at this point are less a production duo than an easy listening pop-rock band who dabble in electronics, like if the Fray commissioned a remix project. Memories… Do Not Open is as edgeless as that description implies. As ever, Taggart and Pall revel in their most basic instincts, this time in service of the goopiest songwriting imaginable. The Coldplay collaboration makes so much sense now, though by comparison these saccharine, elementary in-my-feelings anthems cast even Coldplay’s worst impulses in a sympathetic light.

I’m using the Virtual Mix Rack plug-in from Stephen Slate on the master bus. I love that, and it’s just adding some thickness. It gives the entire song a little bit more warmth in the bottom end. I did something on this song, and on ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ as well, which I have never done before, which was to have sections in the volume automation where I push the entire mix in the drops up half a decibel. We wanted the drops to hit a little harder, and that was a subtle but effective way to add extra punch and impact.

Before The Chainsmokers concert at Capital One Arena on Tuesday, I had never been to a full-on EDM concert. I had never immersed myself in the horrific world of beep boop music” and crazed MDMA-fueled dancing. So I decided to give the electropop giants a chance and lean into the experience … but my open mind didn’t last long.

The first number one single for not only The Chainsmokers, but also for Hasley, provides a fantastic representation of the band. The build to Andrew Taggart and Halsey’s vocals harmonizing during the bridge is powerful due the catchy synth melody building throughout the song. This unforgettable and expressively progressive song will make everyone pumped for the start of Musikfest.

However, despite intentions to stay behind the scenes, Taggart seems to have been drawn to another facet of music, and it’s one that has worked for him and for collaborator Pall. The Chainsmokers have grown a lot from their beginnings in the club scene to their nationally televised performance Sunday. That performance showed a big jump from the days of “#Selfie,” too. It seems like both Taggart and Pall are pushing forward into new success.

When Drew comes to me with a production that they feel is mostly done, in the first instance it’s my job to poke holes in it, and point out places where I think it can be better. If he agrees, he’ll go back to his Ableton session and he’ll make adjustments, and will export those and I’ll load those back in my session. There’s this expression, ‘We’ll fix it in the mix,’ and sometimes you can, but where possible I prefer to go back to the production session and tweak stuff in that. For example, in ‘Closer’ there was a bass track that I didn’t feel was really working, and we listened to it together and he agreed. So he redid the bass in Ableton, by removing all the attack on it. This softened the bass, and made it sit much better with the kick.

Now, of course, the group’s ambitions are far grander. Having already dominated the radio and streaming game, the Chainsmokers are now setting sights on the live-music experience. To that end, for the duo’s headlining tour, with opening performances from boy band 5 Seconds of Summer and ascendant singer-songwriter Lennon Stella, the Chainsmokers are utilizing levitating stages as well as what they call the Globe of Death,” a 5,000-pound circular structure that will see daredevil motorcyclists riding in circles around the DJ’s as they perform some of their most sonically intense songs.
