God have mercy, I finally finished this horrific book! Honestly, it wasn’t so bad, just tedious and repetitive. I picked it because (a) the movie was coming out and (b) I recognized the title as a popular book, albeit a couple years ago. In addition, Andrea’s job in Runway made it hard for her to stay in touch with her boyfriend, Nate and their relationship began to dwindle. The same goes to Lily and her family. She had turned down virtually every invitations from her friends to go for a drink or to hang out, giving the reason she can’t leave her boss unattended. But on the bright side, her job often gives her the chance to grab Gianni Versace S.p.A., Jimmy Choo, Marc Jacobs, and Prada labeled clothes, shoes and bags just to name a few, via the Closet, a special department in Runway that provides the staffs and models everything they need to impress Miranda.
Streep’s Miranda is complex and compelling. Though her outfits and superciliousness are as outrageous as everyone else’s, Miranda tends to speak quickly and quietly, to assume her supremacy even as she’s vulnerable. Fashion-loving teens are likely to enjoy this frothy tale.
Regarding Miranda Priestly, it is rare that I have come across a character that deserves a slow a horrid death, but she deserves to die slowly. No matter the talent the woman had in editing, I would argue that her knee caps be shot out, one at a time, six months apart, then followed by her thumbs being removed with piano wire. Lastly, her tongue should have been removed with acid. Once finished with these (perhaps one year later, maybe two), poisoning by strychnine would be administered in order for her to suffocate and die of asphyxiation.
She is a powerful New York City-based editor-in-chief of the fictional fashion magazine Runway. She is known as much for her icy demeanor, as for her outstanding power within the fashion world. She has a loyal style editor, Nigel, who often gives Miranda advice.
Fans of the film, and especially of Streep’s superb portrayal of Miranda (she was nominated for an Oscar but that award went to Helen Mirren) will know about the diabolically aloof and condescending editor. But Streep’s performance and Frankel’s direction gave us a more human character. For all her cold heartedness, Streep’s Miranda is ultimately approachable and strangely likeable. Weisberger’s Miranda is a Nietzschean machine, ruthless to the core, reminiscent of Jack London’s Death Larson (the more purely evil brother to Wolf Larson).

There was also the case of Nigel. Thank God that they gave that role to Stanley Tucci, because he turned it into something fantastic. But book Nigel is a major homo who wears cat suits and HE TALKS IN CAPITALS ALL THE TIME WHICH IS REALLY ANNOYING AND GIRL THOSE SHOES ARE SO LAST SEASON. I think you get the idea – annoying, shoot him, please.
Right away, Andy admits she doesn’t read “Runway” or know the most about fashion, but she’s willing to work hard and put her best foot forward. This is the first time we see Andy hold her own and face Miranda instead of walking away completely, and it acts as a great starting point for her character’s development.

This book was super popular and a sequel has come out (which is currently sitting on my to-read shelves waiting for me to dig into it) in recent years. For those who don’t know about the first book in this series, we are following Andrea (or Andy) who gets a job at a famous, fashion magazine (similar to Vogue) which is run by the insane workaholic Miranda Priestly. Andrea believes this is the step she needs to get into her journalism career! A job at a high end fashion magazine! But, as we all know, nothing is ever that simple.
Three months after the film’s North American release (October 2006), Frankel and Weisberger jointly accepted the first Quill Variety Blockbuster Book to Film Award. A committee of staffers at the magazine made the nominations and chose the award winner. Editor Peter Bart praised both works.
The Devil Wears Prada is two films in one: a caustic, energetic satire of the fashion world and a cautionary melodrama. The road, literally and figuratively, brought The Devil Wears Prada to their sixth full-length album Transit Blues Rise Records.
This scene consists of some of the best lines delivered by Emily Blunt in the film. Between her denying her illness on the day of the benefit, telling Andy she needs to stop talking and repeating that she loves her job, we start to see more of Emily’s character. It would be a shame if any of these moments were cut.
And the movie, while noting that she can be sadistic, inconsiderate and manipulative, is unmistakably on Miranda’s side. How, really, could it be otherwise? In Hollywood, for one thing, an abused assistant is, like a Toyota Prius, an indispensable accessory — an entitlement, really — for anyone who even wants to seem powerful.
Emily is hit by a taxi and tossed up against its windshield. We later see her in the hospital with a badly bruised face and a cast on her leg. Andy accidentally closes a taxi’s door on her father. Furious with Miranda, Andy smashes a plate.
