But the words don’t translate well onscreen, and only serve to distract from our efforts to understand what the hell is going on.


It’s pretty much guaranteed that any project involving both Anne Hathaway and Joan Didion is going to be great. Throw Oscar-nominated Dee Rees into the mix (Mudbound, Pariah, Bessie) and we’re nearly howling with excitement. That’s why we’re expected big things from The Last Thing He Wanted, especially after watching the recently released trailer for the film.

For those who are new to the project, this sounds like a promising title for Netflix. Having Rees attached is a big win as she’s poised to be one of the marquee directors and filmmakers in the industry. But having Hathaway and now Affleck attached to the movie lends some serious star power to the movie.

And all of that means, there should be plenty of their fans, especially Hathaway fans, who will be streaming the movie on Netflix when it’s released next year. How fabulous is JD? She is so consistently good and so erudite that it is a joy to open the page and let the words flow over you. This is a great story, I really enjoyed the way she played out the thriller aspect, and I believe it will be made into a movie soon – in the right hands this could be brilliant.

Yet in a significant way these two recent books are markedly different from Didion’s previous work. On the subject of the deaths of John and Quintana she has certainly brought to bear all the skills she has developed over fifty years of writing, skills which place her at the forefront of twentieth century American prose stylists. But the way she questions her assumptions about herself as a writer is not just subject here – it also alters that famous style significantly, and redraws the relationship between style and meaning within her work in a way that begs scrutiny.

Yet the impotence of Didion’s characters is extreme—including the storyteller, who, in the hands of a less clever novelist, might have wrung out a few drops of enlightenment. How do you manage to waste Ben Affleck, Willem Dafoe and Anne Hathaway? Write a shitty script, that’s how.

Didion’s manipulation of this American brand of newspeak added another layer of irony to her fiction. The action of Democracy takes place in 1975, as America finally disengages from Vietnam. The novel’s central character, Inez Victor, is married to a senator who wants to be president and whose handlers are doing all they can to suppress exposure of the dysfunction of the couple’s family (just as the US is doing its best to forget about southeast Asia). I say lesser degree for Dafoe just because his fans are of a different demographic than Hathaway and Affleck’s who represent the younger contingent of fans who are eager watchers on Netflix.

This dichotomy is most intensely felt in her fiction. Dark and brooding, her novels dramatise the social breakdown and political misdirection delineated in her early essays. Confused central characters, usually women, negotiate puzzling and often dangerous situations, manipulated by elusive and cynical men. Miscommunication abounds. The drama is high but emotion is atrophied. Didion’s protagonists dream about what their lives might be while the detail of their days – social, sexual, familial – unfolds blankly in a style even more terse and elliptical than her nonfiction.

Didion’s story is about Elena McMahon, a woman who is never quite sure who she is as she transitions from reporter to Hollywood mogul wife to reporter again and then flees I recently realized that I plan to read everything of Didion’s that I can. This is the first of her novels I checked out, and it is a compelling read weaving fact and fiction in a way that sheds light on “counterintelligence”, essentially where the action is in politics certainly since 1960 and arguably since the end of WWII.


The place is El Salvador in 1982, at the ghastly height of its civil war. The writer is Joan Didion, who delivers an anatomy of that country’s particular brand of terror – its mechanisms, rationales, and intimate relation to United States foreign policy. As ash travels from battlefields to body dumps, interviews a puppet president, and considers the distinctly Salvadoran grammar of the verb “to disappear,” Didion gives us a book that is germane to any country in which bloodshed has become a standard tool of politics.

Netflix is definitely not a company that is going to let a good thing go. After the monster critical success of Mudbound,” the streaming service wants to stay in the Dee Rees business, and it looks like they’re going to do just that.

So much is thrown at the screen here that one wonders whether a miniseries might have been a more fitting way to adapt Didion’s novel, especially given that the film is a Netflix production. But as it stands, as a two-hour film packed with too much and somehow not enough, The Last Thing He Wanted is a thing that no one wanted.

Again, it feels like chunks are missing here. No one fares any better, with Ben Affleck listless in a thinly written role. As much as I like him, he’s got very little to work with and seems bored and disinterested throughout. Willem Dafoe is good as Hathaway’s dementia addled father, but there’s no real meat to the role, and if there was it was cut out, with his unceremonious exit from the film puzzling. Rosie Perez ‘s photojournalist character has no urgency beyond doing what Hathaway demands she does throughout, although Mel Rodriguez (The Last Man on Earth”) does fine work in a showy, small role as an unseemly crony of Dafoe’s.
