Back then, growing up in the New York City suburb of Ramsey, New Jersey, Wesley spent his days drawing. Today, as bandleader of The Lumineers, Wesley’s replaced his pencil with a guitar and his drawings with songs. He still practices a lot, and it still turns out good.

On the latest album, the band tracks how this disease progresses through three generations. The first includes an alcoholic woman named Gloria Sparks. In the song “Gloria,” Schultz imagines how Gloria’s children see her and how she sees herself. “Gloria being that important and also being that dysfunctional is where the album kind of begins,” Schultz explains.

In early October, The Lumineers also shared a cover of Tom Petty’s Walls” to benefit MusiCares®. The band opened up for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers three times and performed Walls” at the annual MusiCares® Person of the Year Gala in 2017, where Petty was the honoree.

Denver, Colorado’s The Lumineers released their eponymous debut album through Nashville’s Dualtone in 2012. The triple platinum album garnered two GRAMMY nominations and spawned the chart-topping platinum singles, Ho Hey” and Stubborn Love.” The band also served as Saturday Night Live’s musical guest on January 19, 2013.

The story follows the destructive path of addiction as it enters the life of matriarch Gloria in Chapter I. It’s a struggle that will be recognizable to anyone who’s had a loved one deal with addiction or faced it themselves.THE LUMINEERS

The Lumineers had completed a home-recorded album in Denver. But they were persuaded to hold it back and remake the songs in a professional studio. And what may at first sound like arrangements tossed together on a back porch actually, on closer listening, reveal careful choices about how instruments, vocals and effects are deployed.

Starting in early summer, The Lumineers have plans to tour across the U.S. and Europe, including their biggest ever UK shows at The O2 Arena London, Manchester Arena, The SSE Hydro Glasgow, and dates across Europe including 3Arena Dublin, Le Zénith Paris and Verti Music Hall Berlin, as well as a string of festival dates that include Hangout, Bonnaroo, Tinderbox, Splendour in the Grass, Fuji Rock, Osheaga, Outside Lands, and more. Headline tour dates in the US and Canada have not yet been announced.

Her EP sets the mood that carries on through the rest of the album, solemn and serious but paired with upbeat tunes. Schultz says his honest lyrics are paired with upbeat music on purpose to balance the songs.

The Lumineers have already heralded III by rolling out the album’s first two chapters with six prior video premieres, including “Donna,” “Life In The City,” “Gloria,” “It Wasn’t Easy To Be Happy For You,” and “Leader of the Landslide,” all streaming now via YouTube HERE Together, the 10 videos comprise III, a full-length visual manifestation of the album depicted in three chapters corresponding to the album’s 10 tracks. Both the album and film explore trauma and addiction over three generations of the working-class Sparks family – Gloria Sparks, her son Jimmy and her grandson Junior. The Lumineers co-founders Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites’ lyrics narrate the raw and visually stunning vignettes, each depicting the agony of love, loss and the enduring impact of substance abuse from one generation to the next.

Films, movies, television, books: They all tell stories that allow audiences to see glimpses of themselves. The Lumineers have told their own story in III,” a 10-track concept album composed of three chapters that follows the fictitious Sparks family.

We don’t know how many great albums we have left,” says Schultz. And so he and Fraites push themselves harder and try not to worry about commercial success, instead making music that they’re passionate about.

The idea ultimately became the framework of the Denver band’s new album, III, set to be released in full on September 13. The record is made up of three separate EPs—the first arrived in May and the second in August—each of which examines the life of a different member of the fictional Sparks clan and ultimately weaves a narrative about the long-term consequences of addiction and mental health problems.

Naturally, this album felt different than the others. After cellist Neyla Pekarek left the group to launch her solo career at the end of 2018, Schultz and Fraites had to reconsider their folky sound ― an Americana vibe they were known for since their lively 2012 single Ho Hey” climbed to No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart. But they weren’t worried.

Got there around 6:30. The weather was not cooperating with us. Fortunately they were handing out rain ponchos at the door. The show began with the short film III. It was basically a video for every song of this concept album that had three parts. Told a very sad but beautiful story about this family. Nick Stahl was in it. He was good. Next was about a ten minute Q&A with the band. It was interesting but I think the crowd would have been more receptive were it not for the weather. Finally they did a long acoustic set. I think they played all the songs you want to here from every album. None of the hits left out. It sounded great. Everyone sang along. They did one encore. I think it was ‘Have you ever seen the rain?’ but I could be wrong. I remember it was in a minor key which was interesting.

In 2011, an eponymous, self-recorded EP led to a self-booked tour, and before long The Lumineers started attracting devout fans, first across the Western US, then back in their old East Coast stamping grounds. Young, old and in-between, they’re drawn by songs like Ho Hey” and Stubborn Love,” Americana-inflected barnburners in the vein of the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons. The Lumineers have taken their latest album, III, as an opportunity to shine a light on a topic that’s close to many of the members’ lives — addiction. III tells a story of addiction in three acts. As the album runs from one song to the next, it’s a tale of one family facing the same problem. “It’s the family secret and it’s a taboo,” Wes Schultz, the band’s lead vocalist, says.

The album does include a fourth part, which contains bonus tracks,” which I assume are songs that didn’t fit with their album’s narrative. I wasn’t blown away with any of the album; if anything, I was disappointed from the very first song. There was nothing much to complain about regarding any single piece, but none of the pieces really stood out in the first place. Overall, though, III” is a solid album, especially if you’re missing the original Lumineers sound that made them so great.

After years of touring the world in support of their debut album, the band released the follow up Cleopatra on Dualtone, in 2016. The platinum album debuted #1 on both Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart and the UK Albums Chart and featured the gold title track as well as the platinum single, Ophelia”. The tour in support of Cleopatra included two sold out shows at Madison Square Garden and one at the Hollywood Bowl.

The Lumineers also took inspiration from Beyoncé, who sparked the visual album trend with 2016’s Lemonade. For III, Schultz and Fraites paid Kevin Phillips, who directed Netflix’s teen thriller Super Dark Times, out of their own pockets to produce videos for each song. The short films contain shocking images, enabling the group to access depths its lighthearted melodies sometimes can’t reach. The visual aspect,” Fraites says, lets us really show what we’re trying to convey lyrically.” To wit: In the video for Gloria,” a mother is rushed to the hospital after collapsing from alcohol poisoning.

Lyrically, The Lumineers use searing imagery, painting a picture with each song. This picture — the life of Gloria, her son Jimmy and her grandson, Junior — is even further illuminated by the heartbreaking short film that accompanies the record.

Last night, The Lumineers hit the stage at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to deliver a captivating, intimate performance of their latest single Gloria” The new track is the first release from their forthcoming album III which comes out on September 13th via Dualtone (an Entertainment One Company) in the U.S. and Canada and Decca Records for the rest of the world. Gloria,” according to lead vocalist Wesley Schultz, is about love between an addict and her family.” As part of the set, the backdrop was complete with vintage patterns and found family footage.

The piano melody was pretty but melancholic, and as the lyrics came out, bitterness took over the sound. Donna” is a song about a reluctant mother and a dysfunctional family, and the music video pushes the emotions that catalyze the song as you follow a mother who clearly does not want to be there.

The Denver folk group The Lumineers was founded in 2002 by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, who grew up together in the New Jersey suburb of Ramsey. In its early days, the band had its sights on nearby New York as the gateway to success.

Amid their success, Fraites and Schultz have also struggled since the release of Cleopatra and as they made III. Fraites, who drank his way through writing his first two albums, kicked booze a couple of years ago, realizing it wasn’t doing him any good. He wants to devote his full attention to the music and didn’t see how partying was helping.

The Meadowlark was a gathering place for the musicians in Denver’s close-knit music scene — a place where the Lumineers would run into local folk-pop heroes like the songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff and the band Paper Bird And there, two songs at a time, the Lumineers were building the local following that would begin the band’s momentum toward its current Top 10 single, Ho Hey,” and two nominations at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, for best new artist and best Americana album.

Part one, which follows the reluctant mother, starts with the slow, simple piano melodies that characterize the bitterness she feels, and builds up to a louder, faster-paced sound that is more like that of the Lumineers’ second album, representing her escape from the life she hated.

The Lumineers, who sold over 300,000 tickets on their 2017 tour in support of Cleopatra, are currently headlining festivals including Bonnaroo, which they play this coming Sunday. However, some people still wave the flag for different ways of working, one of them being Kevin Augunas. The producer, mixer and engineer has worked with the Black Keys, Lostprophets, Melissa auf der Maur, Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, J-Roddy Walston and the Business and Jon Brion, and last year mixed the Lumineers’ self-titled debut album, which reached the US top 10 — an impressive achievement for the hitherto completely unknown folk trio from Denver, Colorado.

Moving onto the Junior Sparks chapter comes It Wasn’t Easy To Be Happy For You,” which illustrates first heartbreak. The song is simplistic but relatable to any listener who’s had a first love. Also within the chapter is Leader Of The Landslide.” The track begins to show the trail of addiction through Junior’s abusive relationship with his father. The song is a lot to unpack but the execution is successful and leaves listeners hopeful Junior will break the chain of poor habits.

Leader Of The Landslide”, the next song from Junior Sparks will be released on August 2 with a video for it coming August 5, and the chapter’s third song Left For Denver” will be available on August 16 with the video coming August 19. All the videos for III are directed by Kevin Phillips and produced by Neighborhood Watch. Phillips is known for his filmsSuper Dark Times and Too Cool For School. The video stars Charlie Tahan (Super Dark Times, Ozark) and Emily Kimball (Undeserved, Bad Samaritan).

Fans have been excited to hear the bridge is taken directly from the song Sleep On The Floor” from its previous album, Cleopatra.
