For Stagecoach, which makes a more conscious attempt than most country festivals to book women in to and supporting slots, Underwood’s appearance marks the welcome return of a woman in one of the top slots. The last time a female artist headlined was in 2016, when Shania Twain was one of the top three. The 2020 bill is also filled out with some of the stronger up-and-coming young women of country, including Ingrid Andress, Tenille Townes, Caylee Hammack, Whitney Rose, Jade Jackson and Hailey Whitters.
Dustin Lynch occupies a unique place in today’s country music. Thanks to his classic sensibilities, he’s been heralded as the heir to George Strait’s throne. Yet with one listen to his newest hit, Where It’s At,” it’s obvious the young Tennessean knows how to combine his traditional influences with an edgy intensity that places him at the vanguard of today’s contemporary country scene.

Middle of Nowhere” explores a complicated relationship that Lynch says more closely mirrors his own life. It’s about being stuck in the friend zone and wondering if you should take a friendship into no man’s land where there’s no return,” he explains with a smile. Once you kiss a friend, you’re not a friend anymore. All of a sudden you are something bigger and hopefully better, but sometimes it ends up crashing and burning pretty hard. So there’s that fear factor.
Rhett co-wrote the song I Ain’t Ready to Quit” on Jason Aldeans’ 2010 album, My Kinda Party” and then signed a contract with Big Machine Records, Valory Music Group division in 2011. Although recorded in his hometown of Nashville, Tangled Up was written all over America, during a year-long tour in support of Thomas’ first album. There was something about the highway that made him feel creative. Something about the crowds that made him feel inspired. Something about the sold-out shows that made him want to return to the tour bus and write something exciting. With help from a handful of co-writers, Thomas whipped up a new batch of songs during the hours before soundcheck, after the encore, and during the long rides from one city to the next.

Press play on the year’s biggest country album and you might wonder if you’re listening to a country album at all. Thomas Rhett’s Center Point Road is the genre’s only release to hit #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart this year and enjoyed the biggest debut streaming week ever for a country album, with 33.59 million on-demand track streams. Up,” its opening track, could easily be mistaken for the work of some George W. Bush-era frathouse troubadour like Jason Mraz or Gavin DeGraw; only Rhett’s loosely drawling vocal stands out as particularly country amidst blaring brass, an exultant gospel choir, and a tight adult contemporary groove. Then comes Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time,” Rhett’s hit collaboration with Little Big Town, which merges the boisterous lead guitar and flirtatious debauchery of modern Nashville with an ’80s funk rhythm something like sanitized Prince.
Two of the artists of the year honorees, Luke Combs and Carrie Underwood, were in the middle of touring and couldn’t attend the show, but Underwood performed two songs live on the show via her tour stop in Cleveland, Ohio. She stopped her show to address fans in the venue and watching on TV.

Growing up, there was no such thing as listening to one radio station,” he remembers. Instead, Thomas Rhett would regularly flip from one station to another, cranking up a mix of country, pop, R&B, rap, rock, and oldies. It was a tangle of music. Decades later, he’s tipping his hat to those days with Tangled Up, an album that mixes the sound of his influences with equal doses of groove, melody and twang.
Last month, country music fans everywhere were overjoyed to hear that CMA Fest host Thomas Rhett and his wife of seven years, Lauren Akins, are expecting a third child early next year. This new addition is yet another exciting chapter in the couple’s fairytale love story, which has inspired hit songs and taken country music red carpets by storm.
It’s just weird,” Rhett reflected ( via his record label ). “I think looking back at my 19-year-old self, that never in a million years thought that I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to stay in Nashville and just write songs, to where we’re at now is all a God thing to me. Every decision that we made and every tour I said yes to, every tour I said no to, every song I did cut, every song I didn’t cut, I think it was all part of some crazy plan.
Thomas Rhett is quickly becoming one of the reigning superstars in country music, a fact that surprises no one more than the singer. The 29-year-old admits he has worked hard for all of his success, but says most of the credit belongs to his faith in God.
Citing Luke Bryan as an influence in his unpredictable musicality, Rhett is striving to reach that point where fans aren’t surprised by anything he does; whether it’s writing hits for other artists (like Jason Aldean’s 1994” or Lee Brice’s Parking Lot Party”), or exploring the multiple sides of his personality in his own music. I want my brand to be where people are not shocked when I do certain things. I want people to go ‘I knew Thomas Rhett would do that because he likes to extend and go past the boundaries,” he says.
They also sound like hit songs. Crash and Burn,” the album’s first single, climbed into the Top 10 long before the album’s release, and any number of the remaining tracks — from South Side, a groove-heavy song co-written with Chris Stapleton, to Die a Happy Man,” a heartfelt tribute to Thomas Rhett’s wife — could follow its climb up charts. Meanwhile, songs like Single Girl” mix his country-boy croon with layers of poppy synthesizers, and Tangled” models itself after Michael Jackson’s dance floor jams.

It’s a phenomenon familiar to the country star who had the last #1 album before Rhett’s. That’d be the young black country phenom Kane Brown. Like Center Point Road, Brown’s chart-topping Experiment exists along the blurry borderline between boilerplate Nashville tropes and more pop-minded easy listening fare. Good As You” (#36 on the Hot 100) shares some DNA with Ed Sheeran, while Lose It” (#28) more explicitly embraces a country sound with abundant banjo and fiddle in the mix. His biggest exposure outside the country bubble, though, has come through collaborations with two of the most genre-averse hit-makers of this moment.
We would highly recommend the Thomas Rhett tour! It was beyond our expectations. Budweiser Stage is our favourite venue in Toronto and the opening acts were awesome as well. Our only complaint would be with the City of Toronto that recommended everyone not drive only to find that access to the venue was blocked when getting off the Go train. We had an extra 30 minute walk that resulted in us missing the first opening act. Most of us would have come earlier and worn appropriate shoes if we had been informed.
