He is also known for hit songs like “Craving You,” “Die A Happy Man” and “Marry Me.” Rhett was named male vocalist of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2017, and has served as a judge at the Miss America pageant.
Next up was “Make Me Wanna.” The 2013 track is from his debut album, “It Goes Like This.” The Bee Gees vibe had fans dancing with the added rhythm and blues. Rhett even brought out a trumpet player for some soul. With the beat similar to Justin Timberlake‘s “Suit & Tie,” Rhett remixed his record with the lyrics of the hit track, but then slowed it down for some a cappella.
Like his father, Rhett – who also goes by the nickname TR” – is a prolific songwriter. When out on the road, he dedicates an entire tour bus to songwriting sessions with his father and a rotating cast of Nashville writers.

Life Changes captures that whirlwind period. Recorded while Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren, were in the middle of adopting their daughter from Africa and awaiting the birth of their second child, it’s the biggest, boldest-sounding record of his career, filled with songs that stretch his sound to new limits. Kicking off the album is “Craving You,” a driving, danceable pop anthem filled with ’80s-inspired production and guest vocals for Maren Morris. From there, Life Changes carves a path as wild and wide as his own career. There are coming-of-age country ballads, heartland rock & roll anthems, EDM-influenced pop tracks and R&B slow jams all wrapped together by the songwriting skills and elastic vocals of a frontman who’s willing to shine a light on his own milestones and mistakes.
Rhett found this sweet spot after debuting at the tail-end of the bro country craze of the 2010s, finding his groove in 2015 with “Crash and Burn” and “Die a Happy Man” – a pair of Country Airplay number ones from 2015, the former finding the singer fleet on his feet, the latter showcasing the domesticated romantic side that became his calling card. Over the next few years, those long-term love songs, epitomized by the 2017 number one “Marry Me,” kept Rhett at the top of the charts and cemented his place as one of the biggest country-pop singers of the latter half of the 2010s.
Rhett co-wrote the song I Ain’t Ready to Quit” on Jason Aldeans’ 2010 album, My Kinda Party” and then signed a contract with Big Machine Records, Valory Music Group division in 2011. His follow up single Beer With Jesus” was released on September 4th 2012, and reached number 1 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. It wasn’t until his song It Goes Like This” released on May 6th 2013, that Rhett got the success that he deserved, with the song going Platinum, and making it to number 1 on the US Country Airplay chart, it also became the title track of his debut album, which was released on October 29th 2013. The albums’ fourth single Get Me Some of That” became Rhett’s second number 1 single.
Literally every night in our concert, someone gets engaged to that song. It’s crazy. You look out in the crowd and there is a flashlight on somebody in Section 345. They got on a knee and proposed. When a song is that powerful and it’s a song that people are using as their first dance song at their weddings — that’s why you make music. You make music to make people feel what you felt when you were writing it. Make people feel about their loved one the way you feel about your loved one. To me that’s the power of what a song can do, and that one had the right place, right time, right sentiment, and right emotion.
With 13 smash No. Ones hits, an armload of awards including current ACM Awards Male Artist of the Year, and a growing reputation for electrifying headline tours, he’s spent the last seven years evolving from a kid on Center Point Road into a sonic trailblazer, and country radio’s most-played artist of 2018. Rhett was two years old when his father, then 22, moved the family from small-town Georgia to Nashville to try and make it in the music business. It was the early 1990s and country music was in a boom period led by juggernaut Garth Brooks. Akins quickly landed a songwriting deal, followed by a recording contract. We started to send it out to my manager and some of the folks at my label and I was like, I like it enough that I’m gonna put it in my set tonight.” So we wrote the song that morning at 10:00 and I played it in Little Rock, Arkansas — forgot half the words but it didn’t matter. When you write a song like that, I don’t think you ever know how big a song is gonna be. I think that song came out at the perfect time, when there weren’t a whole lot of ballads on the radio and a time when there really weren’t a whole lot of love songs on the radio, at least love songs from a husband to his wife.
All in all, Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins seem to be in it for the long haul. Their sweet love story will surely continue to inspire millions of fans around the world – and Rhett will probably continue to write songs about it.
