GRAMMY®-nominated Essential Records’ artist Zach Williams has released a music video for his song Old Church Choir.” This song is the follow-up to his recording-breaking No. 1 debut hit, Chain Breaker,” which held the top spot at radio for 15 weeks. His personal testimony of receiving freedom in the Lord is so beautifully reflected in his debut single Chain Breaker”. The song came from a place of wanting to reach people who had been struggling and it undoubtedly has. Over the course of it’s release in the summer of 2016, an influx of stories have been shared on his various social media pages by people who have experienced the life changing power of broken chains.
Meanwhile, the new album’s title-track lead single hits the top 10 on both Hot Christian Songs and Christian Airplay on the latest, Sept. 28-dated surveys, and Williams performs an exclusive live version on the podcast.
Never in his wildest dreams did Zach think he would be in this place of writing and recording music in the Christian music industry, especially from years of hard living on the road while in a rock & roll band. He thought his life was fulfilling and he was doing what he had always wanted to do, but that left him empty, lonely, and further away from God and his family than ever before. For years he sought meaning and fulfillment in the unhealthy, and sometimes dangerous, lifestyle he was living.

Grammy Award-winning Christian singer Zach Williams joined the likes of his musical hero Johnny Cash and recorded his latest album live from a prison.
I spent a year and a half on this record, in a season of just kind of reflecting on what God has done in my life. It’s really the first time since the success of the Chain Breaker” album that I’ve kind of had a chance to kind of get a breath and look around and see what’s happened. And you know, as I started to look around and see what happened in three years, I started looking to 20 years ago when I first started playing music and the places I was and the people I was running with, how God protected me and kept me out of certain things that honestly, at the moment, I didn’t even realize it. Looking back, I can see that He was preparing this way and putting all this together. And I just feel really honored to be here and just have the opportunities that I have now.

WILLIAMS GREW UP IN A HOME FILLED WITH LOVING PARENTS WHO CREATED A SAFE WORLD FOR HIM TO LIVE IN, SURROUNDED BY FAMILY MEMBERS AND NEIGHBORS WHO ENCOURAGED HIM. YET THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THAT CHILDHOOD SEEMED LIKE A DISTANT MEMORY AS WILLIAMS WATCHED HIS LIFE SPIRAL OUT OF CONTROL OVER A DECADE LATER.
The guys talk about how the band was birthed out of community and that it was at family gatherings in the early days of their friendship that they would grab their guitars and start writing songs. The songs came quickly and easily” says Thomas and they were simply an overflow of what the Lord was doing in our lives individually and as a community.” In 2016, they decided to record an album of the songs that they had been writing under the name HOLY MNTN and before long they were getting invites from all over the country for them to perform their music.
Even though I grew up going to church every Sunday as a kid, even though I knew right from wrong and said I was a Christian, there was absolutely nothing about the way I was living that reflected these things,” Zach shares. It took a trip to Europe in 2012 to stop me dead in my tracks and show me just how lost I really was.” That year, with his wife by his side, his faith became real to him and he found renewal by dedicating his life to Christ. He hasn’t looked back since.

Before embarking on his solo career in the Christian genre, singer-songwriter Zach Williams , 41, from Jonesboro, Arkansas, fronted a rock band, Zach Williams & The Reformation, which launched in 2007.
His personal testimony of receiving freedom in the Lord is so beautifully reflected in his debut single Chain Breaker”. The song came from a place of wanting to reach people who had been struggling and it undoubtedly has. Over the course of its release in the summer of 2016, an influx of stories have been shared on his various social media pages by people who have experienced the life changing power of broken chains. He has since released a special project Survivor: Live From Harding Prison in partnership with Men of Valor that was recorded live at a prison in Nashville, TN.
Williams said he was so lost in his life as a rock musician that he wasn’t sure he wanted to perform anymore. Then he returned home to Arkansas and found his love of music again.
Born in Pensacola, Florida, Williams was raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In 2007, he formed the Reformation with guitarist Josh Copeland , guitarist Robby Rigsbee , bassist Red Dorton , and drummer Creed Slater. Over the next five years, they toured the South and, on occasion, Europe. They cut two independent albums – 2009’s Electric Revival and 2011’s A Southern Offering – before disbanding in 2012.
Christian singer Zach Williams may be famous for his popular songs like ‘Chainbreaker’ and ‘Old Church Choir’ but before making music for God, Zach struggled with addiction.

Williams knew Chain Breaker,” with that line about God being a prison-shaking savior,” was one of the compositions he had to sing at Nashville’s Harding Prison, where he performed for 250 men incarcerated there. He performed as part of a partnership with Men of Valor , a nonprofit group committed to helping incarcerated men discover God and equipping them to re-enter society.

Accountability. Like you just said, community. It’s funny, I’m on the road so much now that a lot of the time I’m out on the road on a Sunday. So the only time that I get to watch or hear church is when I check the livestream out of the church I would go to when I was living in Arkansas or find ones from different pastors. I’ll also listen to podcasts. It always seems to be something that feels like it’s directed at what I’m going through in that moment, that day, or that week. I’ve always said it’s no coincidence whenever you hear those things. God is actually speaking to you through that. I think a lot of it is just getting with people who have the same beliefs and values as you do. I think that’s kind of what this band is – you’ve got a bunch of guys who want to be held accountable for everything they’re doing.
But music would return to him outside of his church’s walls at around the time he and his wife started getting involved in prison ministry. ZACH WILLIAMS WAS BORN AND RAISED IN A SMALL TOWN OUTSIDE JONESBORO, ARKANSAS, NOT UNLIKE ANDY GRIFFITH’S MAYBERRY OR A SCENE FROM THE GOONIES.
Fast forward to his late 20s and Williams was a leader of the band Zach Williams & The Reformation. On the wave of the band’s rising popularity and in the newlywed stage of his second marriage, Williams got the news from a doctor: he had early stages of esophagus cancer. Starting in high school, Williams experimented with drugs and alcohol, starting out as nothing more than teenage rebellion and spiraling into abusive habits and addiction. Instead of seeking help, Williams dove deeper into his addiction.
First, Dolly Parton collaborated with For King & Country in a delicate, powerful version of God Only Knows.” Now, she’s infused her legendary vocals into a Zach Williams song. The old-fashioned, weathered beauty of her voice brings a hand-written honesty and raw humanity to every song she graces. Listen to her sing There Was Jesus” with Zach Williams.
